The house

A personality.

Some places or houses are hard to describe otherwise. So is the 'manor' with its magisterial view over the valley of 'Les Mirandes' in Montmoreau-Saint-Cybard. Balanced, tightly defined and stately, the manor has stood there like a magisterial 'viewing box' in the landscape for more than a century and a half. And at the same time, it is not ostentatious and manages to subtly embed itself in its surroundings. It is also a thoughtful and unusual building - as if plucked straight from a Parisian boulevard - to the measurements and taste of an urbanised nineteenth-century bourgeois. The whole is surrounded by a playful landscape garden with several 'rooms without a roof'. To linger there, enjoying the view, over a cup of coffee, tea or chocolate, in company. Or to retire there in peace with a book, or just in thought.

A slender wooden spiral staircase connects six stylishly spacious rooms, two on each floor. And in each room the light generously streams in, while you gaze at the grandiose green valley below. On the ground floor and first floor, you hear the steps of those moving above you. Softly, the planks of the parquet creak. This is not a house for rushing, but for sluggish residents.

While in earlier times the aristocracy strutted slowly in their castles and palaces, and today we move fast and often run to the beat of the digital clock and a crowded schedule, the bourgeois rhythm in the nineteenth century was something in between. Strolling is the right word. Garrulous strolling around to look at others in public and be seen yourself. And indoors: a 'slipper parade' where only calm movements are allowed so as not to break the quiet atmosphere of the ticking of the pendulum in the corridor. If you listen carefully and pay attention, the 'manor' in 'Les Mirandes' still speaks to you in a whisper. And even though the time clock has become decor - read: past forever - the "time of the past" still vibrates in walls and matter, just like the rooms and the air are still full of it, which you breathe in and out. And who knows, you may discover the source there: not only outside, in the garden, along the building's foundations, but also inside. Because 'the time of later' is already flowing richly there, if you will. After all, if you keep quiet for a while, wait patiently and find your right rhythm, you will be able to fully indulge in a source of reflection and inspiration.

Montmoreau is a charming French village located in southern Charente, on the border with Dordogne and not far from the Gironde. It lies in the middle of a triangle formed by Cognac, Bordeaux and Périgeux, making it an excellent base for gastronomes and wine lovers. Our beautiful manoir "Les Mirandes" is located about 500 metres outside Montmoreau, a village where you can admire a XIIth century Romanesque church and an old castle, while still enjoying all modern amenities. "Les Mirandes" is located on an old pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and in the past was a place where pilgrims could spend the night and have a meal. As a silent witness to this history, the large wooden cross symbolising the ultimate in hospitality can still be found on our grounds.
'Les Mirandes' is located within walking distance just outside the village on a height, from where you have a beautiful view of the valley. The domain of almost 7 ha is dominated by an elegant, very cosy 19th-century manor house or 'manoir' where you can count on all the necessary comfort and hospitality. In the building complex of the former inn, cosy gîtes have been set up and there is also a ceramics workshop. The property is surrounded by a landscaped garden, a vineyard, an orchard and a piece of untouched forest.

"Les Mirandes" has thus not stolen its name (literally means: place from where one can freely observe the surroundings). The manor offers stunning views over the valley and lower Montmoreau.

    Restaurants, food & wine

Diversity and creativity play a major role in serving our breakfast. Apart from the standard offer of local specialities such as French bread, croissants, home-made jams and various types of cold meats, we offer you a daily 'extra' (including different types of egg preparations, fresh fruit and vegetable juices, etc.), which ensures a varied selection. Even during a longer stay, you will never have to eat the same with us.
Four times a week, we offer the possibility of dining in a casual, family atmosphere. Simple but stylish cuisine where terroir, freshness and quality are key. Our menu varies according to the seasons and the supply of local local produce. Every morning, the daily menu will be presented. At that time, you can decide whether or not to dine with us. On days when we don't cook for you, the numerous local restaurants in the area will certainly charm you.

The price for dinner is € 50 per person and includes an aperitif with amuse-bouche, starter, main course and dessert or cheese (water, coffee or tea included).

    Activities

Openness, space, hospitality, peace and relaxation are guaranteed at 'Les Mirandes', whether you choose to linger by the sunny swimming pool, play a game of 'jeu de boules' in the orchard or stroll through the vineyard or through the authentic park-style garden.

Burgundians and culture lovers will certainly enjoy the rich offer of culture, history and culinary delights in the surrounding villages. Sports enthusiasts can choose from a wide range of sports in the region, such as hiking, cycling, canoeing, golf and fishing.

There is no shortage of activities for children! Our swimming pool, the petanque court in the orchard and the large playground with giant trampoline, ping-pong table, swing, sandpit and football pitch are used by children of all ages.
We are also surrounded by 7 hectares of land, ideal for the most adventurous to explore.
In the immediate surroundings, there are also plenty of possibilities such as the tree trail and adventure park, labyrinth, kayak, the beach on the Dronne river, the lakes of Jemaye and St Yrieix with their inflatable obstacle courses (where there is also a summer bar everywhere, so the mums and dads are also catered for... :-), treasure hunt through the city of Angouleme, etc.... Even a day trip to the sea is a possibility.
Experience has taught us that connections are quickly made among children and what could be nicer for a parent than to enjoy a carefree aperitif while the children are having fun...
