The house
A sweet 19th-century coachman's cottage (for more photos and info see our website), set in beautiful walled private park "Domaine la Croix Chatain" of 40,000 square metres, with fruit trees, French garden with old, dreamy fountain,and forest lane between forest giants. Magnificent views from the park on western Morvan up to 50 km away. The estate is on the outskirts of the old town of Lormes (ca.1500 inhabitants), located in the Parc Naturel Regional du Morvan, at 5 min walking distance (or a few minutes more if you take the forest path) from the centre. On the estate, a restored manor, coach house and gardener's house, as well as a former fruit shop, bakery, horse stables, water tower and large wine cellars. Chickens run loose in the alley.The park with its ancient trees, its horse and goat pastures. Buzzards hover over the house, on the forest side a badger sett, sometimes a roe deer right outside the door. The renovated cottage, with 80 cm. thick walls, has a pleasant kitchen with 4-burner stove, fridge, coffee maker, oven and microwave, with garden doors opening onto your covered terrace and sun garden, overlooking the hydrangeas and rhododendrons, a spacious lawn, linden trees and an ancient red beech.DVD and CD player available. Kitchen/sitting room with a lovely wood-burning stove. Also on the ground floor is the bathroom with shower, toilet and washbasin. Mezzanine with dining table and stairs to first floor bedroom with loft, old tiles and heavy beams. Magnificent views from there. You can park your car on the estate in the car park.

The town of Lormes, with its distinctive church visible from miles around, is a small regional centre (with supermarkets, bakers, butchers, chemist, cafes, 3 restaurants, a hotel, 2 banks etc.), which lies on the border of the Morvan "black mountains" and the lower lying countryside. On the outskirts of the town, a 5 minute walk from the house, you will find a small beach on the lake, where you can take a refreshing dip. 2 tennis courts in the village are available for rent; keys can be picked up at the Tourist Information and at the cafe opposite. The town, which once had two competing castles, exudes the seclusion of former farming communities, with sturdy capital buildings in small streets. A cascade right next to the centre. Many castles in the vicinity, untouched nature and villages, numerous dreamy roads and especially silence. Nowhere you will find so few inhabitants as in this Natural Park. The region that was so beautifully portrayed by the nineteenth-century painter Corot. Often an unprecedented starry sky. Breathtaking skies. And the air is said to be the purest in France....

Dag Erik en Elsje.. Bedankt voor jullie gastvrijheid en vriendelijkheid.. We hebben erg genoten van jullie schitterende plek in Lormes, en dank zij tips van jullie en jullie vrienden van de mooie kunstroute, restaurantjes en een indrukwekkend mooi jazz-concert. Alles goed verzorgd.. Heel compleet en heerlijk huisje..We waanden ons even terug in de tijd.. Heerlijk. met alle rust van de uitgebreide tuin, fontein en natuurlijk de lieve ezels.

Een heerlijke week beleefd in het romantisch en complete koetsiershuisje op een prachtig landgoed met wijds uitzicht over de Morvan. Wat een rust hier, geweldig!!!!!
Het sfeervolle overdekt terras met fijne en comfortabele stoelen .(en ook ligstoelen.....heerlijk om lekker te tafelen met een glaasje wijn en smaakvolle kaasjes uit de regio. Supermarkt "om de hoek", ideaal voor de boodschappen.
Croissants en stokbrood ( en gebak) uiteraard van de fijne bakker uit het dorp.
Elsje en Eric met hun lieve hond Pom als gastvrije en zeer vriendelijke eigenaars die ons bij hen zeer welkom lieten voelen, merci bien!!!! en tot een volgend keer!

Het is een prachtige plek als je van rust en natuur houdt! Alles op loopafstand is, dit is echt een pluspunt! Wat ons tegenviel was de netheid, er was helaas niet goed schoongemaakt. Nadat we dit gemeld hadden werd ons deze feedback niet in dank afgenomen want ondanks dat we nog een keer willen boeken zijn we niet meer welkom!
Restaurants, food & wine
The Morvan is situated in Burgundy, so food and wine get the natural attention that belongs to this region. The "cuisine morvandaise" is honest, sometimes robust, appropriate to rural life. And if you prefer to cook yourself, you will find excellent butchers in Lormes or you can buy your fish on the weekly market. The wines of Burgundy are of course unbeatable. They include the wines from nearby Tannay (try the Melon) and from nearby Vezelay. A few km. Outside Lormes, in the village of Saugny, is the Chateau of the Chabannes family, which has been inhabited by the family since the 15th century. The count is happy to let you taste his wines and you will probably buy a box of his.
Activities
On the site you will find a ping pong table and football in the arcades opposite the Coachman's House, as well as games such as croquet, badminton, jeux de boules, tennis rackets, etc. The Morvan is an excellent walking area. Through the back gate of the park you are immediately in the woods. In addition to the nearby lake, there is a much larger lake with a beach within 15 minutes by car, with few other swimmers. You can go kayaking in the neighbourhood, play tennis just around the corner, and it is a dream environment for cycling and horse riding; you can also bring your horses. The famous Roman basilica in Vezelay, the cathedral of the old Roman settlement of Autun, the mysterious excavation of the oppidum Bibracte of the old Gauls, the beautiful Chateau Bazoches, all places to let the past come to you while musing. Most towns have their weekly market, their annual vide grenier (flea market), and some have a Brocante (antique market). Local festivals with (historical) music, sometimes dance and sitting at long dinner tables next to the locals. There will be no lack of time....
