The house
The Poorthuis is a characteristic house dating from 1804, located in a beautiful walled private park "Domaine La Croix Chatain" of 40,000 square metres, with fruit trees, French garden with dreamy fountain, a forest lane between the forest giants. Magnificent views from the park on western Morvan up to 50 km away. The estate is on the outskirts of the old town of Lormes (approx. 1500 inhabitants) located in the Parc National du Morvan, a 5-minute walk (or a few minutes more if you take the forest path) from the centre. The small lake with beach, a lovely swimming spot, is 10 min walking distance.
On the estate, a restored Manoir, coach house and coachman's cottage, as well as a former fruit shop, bakery, horse stables, water tower and large wine cellars.In the street, chickens run free. On a large outdoor terrace with a chessboard, you can enjoy a wide view. In the park with its century-old trees, a goat and horse pasture. Buzzards hover above the house, at the edge of the woods a badger sett, sometimes a roe deer right outside the door.
The Poorthuis has been restored in its original state and attractively furnished in Art Deco style.
The kitchen diner, with its thick beams and red tiles, has leather armchairs around the wood-burning stove, a spacious 6-person dining table, a bench and a well-equipped kitchen (oven, 5-burner gas hob, microwave oven, etc.). A sound system and DVD player with screen are available.
A beautiful staircase leads to both spacious bedrooms (with high ceilings and old rafters) with double beds. Halfway up the staircase is a comfortable bathroom with an extra toilet. Stairs lead down to the studio, a cool room with old tiles and a sitting area and a desk.From the kitchen door a garden located on the quiet Reu Croix Chatain. Through the other doors a large lawn with fruit trees, accessible to the sun all day. You can park your car on the estate in the car park.

The estate is located on the outskirts of the village of Lormes in a quiet environment. You can walk straight into nature. Opposite the estate is a gorge with a cascade where you can make beautiful walks. The village of Lormes, with its distinctive, from the wide environment visible church, is a small regional centre (with supermarket, bakeries, butchers, pharmacy, cafes, restaurants, a hotel and a bank, etc.) and lies on the border of the Morvanese "black mountains" and the lower landscape. The town with once 2 rival castles, exudes the seclusion of former farming communities, with sturdy capital buildings in small streets.
Just outside the town, (a 5 minute walk from the house), there is a lovely beach on a small lake where you can swim and have a drink on the waterside terrace. The key to the nearby tennis court can be picked up at the tourist office or cafe (opposite) Many castles in the vicinity, unspoilt nature and villages, numerous dreamy roads and especially silence. Nowhere else will you find so few inhabitants as in this nature park. The region, so beautifully portrayed by the nineteenth-century painter Corot, has an unprecedented starry sky, breathtaking skies and the air is said to be the purest in France....

Restaurants, food & wine
The Morvan is in Burgundy, so food and wine get the natural attention that belongs to this region. The "cuisine morvandaise" is honest, sometimes robust, fitting to the rural life. And if you prefer to cook yourself, you will find excellent butchers in Lormes or you can buy your fish on the weekly market. The wines of Burgundy are, of course, unbeatable. These include the wines from the nearby village of Tannay (try the melon) and from the slightly more distant town of Vezelay. A few km outside of Lormes, in the village of Saugny, is the Chateau of the Chabannes family, which has been inhabited by the family since the 15th century. The count is happy to let you taste his wine and you will probably buy a box from him...
Activities
On the site you will find a ping pong table and football in the arcades opposite the Coachman's House, as well as games such as croquet, badminton, jeux de boules, tennis rackets, etc. The Morvan is an excellent walking area. Through the back gate of the park you are immediately in the woods. Within 15 min. drive is a large natural lake with beach and few other swimmers. The famous Roman Basilica in Vezelay, the cathedral of the old Roman settlement of Autun, the mysterious excavation of the oppidum Bibracte of the ancient Gauls, the beautiful Chateau Bazoches, all places to contemplate the past and come to you. Most towns have their weekly market, their annual vide-grenier (flea market) and one village has a Brocante (antique market). Local festivals with (historical) music, sometimes with dancing and sitting at long dinner tables next to the locals.

High chair please reserve in advance. Prices include cleaning costs (assuming you leave the house clean); outsourcing costs 60 euros. Deposit is 250 euros. Afgelopen donderdag zijn wij weer thuisgekomen na een paar heerlijke dagen op het landgoed. Wat een prachtige en rustige plek zo aan de rand van het dorp. Het Poorthuis was zeer aangenaam en vooral zeer sfeervol ingericht, we voelden ons gelijk thuis! Jammer dat wij er maar een paar dagen konden verblijven ivm andere verplichtingen. Wij komen zeker een keer terug! Bedankt!
