Our old farmhouse is at 150 meters from Onlay, located in the southwest of the beautiful natural park 'Parc Régional du Morvan', part of Burgundy. The Morvan covers 243,000 hectares and is characterized by a hilly landscape with forests, meadows, lakes and picturesque villages and towns. An area where time seems to have stood still.
The house is located halfway up a hill, so you have a view all around and you can admire sunrise and sunset. The Dragne flows about 150 meters south of the house (accessible on foot via exit 'Brion' in Onlay). This river can be admired from the garden.

Restaurants, food & wine

Burgundy produces lots of wines. Pommard, Meursault, Gevrey-Chambertin, Beaune are names known for top wines, but cheaper wines can also be found there. You will find wineries and vineyards at a 45-minute drive from our house, towards Beaune.
Do the Route des Grands Crus by bike or by car; past villages, towns and wineries.

Activities

Mont Beuvray is the main attraction in the area. In the summer you can take the bus to the top or climb it. In winter you can take your own car.
You will find a pre-historic museum called 'Bibracte' and there are walking trails. The area is full of excavations from Roman times. During the holidays there are guided tours and demonstrations with birds of prey.
Autun is an interesting place for culture lovers, next to the historic city center there is the temple of Janus to visit.
Beautiful places to visit in Autun are also the churches and the academy. In the summer a small train runs through the city from which you get a good idea of the possibilities.
Le Creusot is a pleasant town, which also has a theme park (Parc des Combes), with many attractions. It is also a thermal village where you can bathe and relax (by appointment).
Swimming
You can swim in the pool in Moulins Engilbert or St Honoré les Baines. But of course also in natural water such as lac de Pannecière (35 km) and Lac de Settons (45 km). Both are very worthwhile for all water sports. The barrages (dams) are also impressive.
Fishing
Lac du Pannecière is highly recommended for fishing. The lake is regionally known as the largest and most fish-rich. Fish species such as perch, carp, pike and catfish are common. You can buy fishing permits at the campsite next to Les-3-Soulins.
Cycling
The Morvan is an excellent cycling area, but the hills can be a challenge. Some routes are;
- La Collancelle → 40.1 km, 75m difference in altitude,
- Marcilly, Cervon, Vauclaix, Montreuillon → 36.3 km, 165m difference in altitude,
- Lac du Pannecière → 50.5 km, 208m height difference
Mountain biking
The Morvan mountain bike trails seem to be the best kept secret in France. Nowhere in France you will find more marked mountain bike routes and also three down hill courses: Autun, the Haut Folin and Breuil near Dun-les-Places. In 2011, the Grande Traversée du Morvan was added to the existing trails. This Grande Traversée (abbreviated to GTM) crosses the Morvan from north to south: a route of 300 kilometers in total.
Start in the north, in the open and rolling bocage landscape of Avallon. Then you drive past the large reservoirs such as the Lac des Settons to the dense oak and beech forest around Mont Beuvray. This is also the highest part of the Morvan. The route continues to the end point of Autun. The GTM is a varied route where you experience the changing character of the Morvan.
At 24 locations in the Morvan, tours have been set out varying from very easy to very difficult. The tours vary from 7 to 50 kilometers and cover a total of 2000 kilometers of routes. The starting points are nicely spread over the Morvan to ensure you can enjoy a variety of landscapes.
Canoe trips
There are two canoe rentals organising trips from Saint Père with a course that varies from 4 to 18 kilometers: From Saint Père you will be taken to the starting point and downstream you will paddle back in one to five hours. You can also make trips on the Chalaux with your own canoe or kayak or go rafting on the Cure and Chalaux via Angie.
Hiking
The Parc naturel régional du Morvan is a beautiful walking area with gently rolling hills. It is very sparsely populated. The main activities are small-scale farming and forestry.
This produces a beautiful scenic landscape with meadows with the white Charolais cows, large tracts of forest and countless streams and lakes. Nature is rich and varied. Many birds live in the hedges along the meadows, such as the hoopoe, the red-backed shrike and the red-breasted wheatear. Many different birds of prey hover above the meadows, such as the honey buzzard and the kestrel. In springtime the meadows are filled with orchids. You can walk for hours whithout meeting anyone.
Brocante markets
In summer season Burgundy is full of markets. They come in all shapes and sizes, from modest flea markets to colorful festivals with music, theater and attractions.
The tradition of markets dates back to the Middle Ages. Once a year, the nobles gave their servants permission to sell whatever they found in their masters' attics and keep the money for themselves. This tradition is kept alive throughout France to this day.
The most popular flea markets are the Vide Greniers (attic clearances).
