The house
Current information regarding season 2024: due to maintenance and decoration works, this lovely house will be available irregularly until the beginning of August. Availability may differ from what the calendar indicates, including in the periods marked as 'not available' until 10 August. Therefore, if you are interested, always contact us to see if we can comfortably accommodate you in your desired period.
The partly 16th-century originally named 'Café de Tannay' offers contemporary comfort with attention to art and design. The unusual building probably belonged to the church stables of the town's 12th-century religious centre and served, among other things, as a café winery in the 19th century. The house contains special architectural details (in stone and wood: buttresses, stone door portals, oak beams, niches bricked in with masonry, 18th-century built-in oak cupboards, stone wine troughs) and was restored in 2008 using traditional materials and techniques as far as possible.
The layout comprises on the ground floor facing the garden a former pub room, now a lounge/dining room with beautiful 19th-century tiled floor; modern, well-equipped kitchen; shower-toilet; on the first floor a bathroom with double washbasin; a spacious landing off which a second toilet and two bedrooms are located. One of these bedrooms also offers access to the 'city garden' with well and shed via an internal stone spiral staircase. The attic floor is not included in the rental.
The lounge/dining room has a sound system to which a private audio player (phone, tablet) can be connected via the headphone output.
Prices quoted do not include 50€ compulsory cleaning.

Surroundings
The house has an enclosed garden facing the quiet main street and a picturesque communal courtyard behind it (shared with a total of four neighbours). The historic wine town of Tannay, described since the early 12th century, lies (with its partially decayed glory) in the northern Nièvre, where a low population density (9 inhabitants/km2) leaves space and tranquility to a lush nature of forest and field, agriculture, viticulture, rivers. Deer, foxes, badgers, wild boars, birds of prey, wild cats... They can still be found here, just like the wild orchid and other special flora.
The centre of Tannay is at walking distance from the river Yonne and the Canal du Nivernais. More than two hours below Paris, just west of regional park the Morvan, it has a wealth of historical sites within reach, with highlights such as Vezelay and Beaune, or on the Loire: Nevers, Cosne and book town La Charité (14 book antiquarian bookshops and regular book markets).

Restaurants, food & wine
Those who wish to explore Burgundian gastronomy can do so in the contemporary kitchen of the Café de Tannay. There are plenty of fresh, also organic, products available, both in the nearby shops and at the farm. Tannay produces a few special local wines (such as the unique dry white 'Melon'), while the great Burgundy and Loire domains (in and around Beaune, Chablis, Irancy, Sancerre, Pouilly) guarantee a fun day's tasting.
Activities
Hiking and (historical) cultural experiences, culinary tourism (both home cooking with local products or with ingredients found in the field, as well as the rich Burgundian restaurant offerings), nature study and canal and river cruising are activities to which the Tannay area particularly lends itself.
This house also lends itself perfectly to longer (work) stays or 'trial living' in France. It is also accessible by public transport (train+bus from Paris).

- Near hiking trails
Further remarks
Quiet and picturesque Tannay offers not only a beautiful rural setting but also all amenities within a few minutes' walk from the house. There is a very well-stocked U Expresse in 'food' and 'non-food', with wine, fruit and vegetables, fresh produce, meat and fish departments, an excellent bakery, 'Maison de Presse' magazine and book shop, two cafés, two independent wine producers, two hairdressers, pharmacy, vet, two Dutch(!) GPs, and a tiny Sunday market.
