Interior description
Neflier cottage is a 17th century traditional stone Breton farmers cottage. The cottage has been lovingly renovated - keeping period features and the exposed oak beams, to create a comfortable spacious holiday cottage. To the front of the property is a large courtyard, whilst to the rear of the property is a private patio and private enclosed garden that opens onto the communal grounds.
The ground floor of the cottage has an open plan living room and diner that opens out onto the private patio complete with seating for al-fresco dining, and a hot-tub (Optional extra - hot tub available to hire on site). Next to the open plan living / dining room, is a well-equipped kitchen. It has a gas oven and hob, fridge freezer, washing machine, dish-washer, kettle, toaster, microwave oven and coffee machine, along with pots, pans, cooking implements, etc.
The open plan living / dining area retains its original exposed oak beams, and has a feature stone wall with fireplace and electric fire and radiator. It has a large comfortable sofa and a hammock seat. It has a flat screen tv complete with TV in English, French, Dutch & German (and other languages), and a DVD player. There is free unlimited wi-fi available in the cottage.
Upstairs there is a large bedroom, again with exposed oak beams. The bedroom is equipped with a king size bed, and a single bed (suitable for up to 12yrs). The bedroom has two velux windows and has blackout-blinds. Heated by a radiator. There is a separate bathroom, with toilet, wash basin and massage shower.
We can supply a travel cot, stair gates, high chair if needed at no extra charge.
The cottage has its own private fenced garden and its own private hot-tub/jacuzzi (optional extra). Guests are welcome to use of the communal areas, shared with the 7 person gite. The communal grounds cover several acres and are mainly laid to grass lawn, they also contain the shared swimming pool (heated Jul-Aug), children's play fort (suitable to age 10), swings and slide. Badminton sets and a football net are also available for use. There is a private car park.
The cottages make a great base for a holiday to explore the best Brittany has to offer with great road links and lots to do in the local area for all ages.

Located within easy distance of main roads the cottages are set in rolling countryside. They are in a small hamlet approximately 1.5km from the nearest shop and bar and about 5km from the nearest town.
The local area has lots to offer, with multiple attractions a short distance from the cottages for all ages. Ornithologists can delight in the variety of species found in this area, with the Lac de Guerledan providing a winter shelter for numerous breeds of both sea and inland birds. Around the rivers, lakes and etangs of this region herons, egrets, kingfishers and other water birds are a common sight as they swoop to poach from the well stocked waterways, as are the birds of prey throughout the region.
For shopping and bargain hunting, our hamlet is ten minutes walk away from the village of St Mayeux, where there is a Post Office, small supermarket, and a bar. As well as our local town of Mur de Bretagne, we are only 15 minutes away from the larger towns of Pontivy, Loudeac and Rostrenen, and about an hour away from the towns of the south coast, including Vannes, Carnac and Quiberon. The city of St Brieuc, 35 minutes to the north, has excellent shopping facilities including one of the largest hypermarkets in Brittany and a bustling cobbled shopping area.
Local street markets are well organised, most being either once or twice weekly but staggered throughout the week. These offer excellent value for locally produced vegetables, cheeses, bread, wine and honey (most of which tempt visitors with free tasters!), and often include stalls selling local craft items. In the summer months Mur de Bretagne also has an excellent evening market every Friday, with local entertainment and usually a gastronomic theme (again with free tasting!). The area is also dotted liberally with antique shops and Depot Vente; where treasures may often be found at exceedingly good prices, particularly for pottery, bric a brac and oak furniture. The many Vide Grenier; (literally translates as Attic Emptying) sales are also a rich source of cheap local treasures and great fun to visit if you wish to try and haggle with the locals.
For the lovers of French Cuisine, there is an incredible choice, ranging from local crepes and cider or traditional country fare in the local village restaurants, to exquisite a la carte meals for that special occasion at the prestigious restaurants by the lake or in the bigger towns. We are less than hour away from the sea, so the the seafood that Brittany is famous for is readily available, both in the shops and in the restaurants, and is always beautifully fresh.
Many local restaurants specialise in seafood dishes, including a broad selection of fish dishes in their daily menu, and the famous fruits de mer dish of shellfish can be found in almost any town near to the coast.
The mild weather of Brittany, particularly inland, makes this area most suitable for a late or early holiday. Often the early Spring and the late Summer/early Autumn weather allows a full range of outdoor pursuits to be enjoyed, and of course the shops and restaurants are that much quieter at that time of year!
This part of Brittany is dotted with areas of historical interest, including many reminders of previous inhabitants and invaders, such as menhirs, megaliths, tumulii and carved stones. Largely unspoilt by commercial development, the area also has many fine original examples of chateaux, watermills and houses of architectural interest, including a nearby preserved foundry village at Les Forges des Salles which can be reached by car, or by a scenic walk through the historic Forest de Quenecan. The tranquillity of a walk to seek out the standing stones or visit an historical monument, is perhaps the perfect way to enjoy the Breton countryside at any time of the year. This is particularly the case in the Autumn when the variety of colours and often clear skies are most photogenic.
Brittany is blessed with a warm and mild climate.

Restaurants, food & wine

Local restaurants to suit all budgets are available in the local town (5km) - from a Michelin starred restaurant to a simple, but high quality pizzeria. In the surrounding areas there are numerous small family run restaurants and café and bars. In the summer there are regular fetes and 'moules frites' (mussels and chips) are often served.
The local area is known for its crepes and its cider, but being France, high quality, competitively priced food and wine is never that far away, and local markets and well equipped supermarkets also allow you to purchase a good range of ingredients for cooking at the cottages. Being centrally located in Brittany it is possible for you to easy get to a range of the local ports to buy fresh fish and sea-food, and many of the local restaurants have fresh fish on the menu, along with moules-frites.

Activities

The Lac de Guerledan is approximately 10 minutes from the cottages. It is a 400 ha lake with a range of activities, from fishing, sailing , water skiing, pedalos, and of course swimming from its sandy beaches. It also has two tourist boats that provide guided tours of the lake. The lake is surrounded by woodland with many walking and mountain biking (ATB) trails.
We are a few minutes from the Tour de France "Guerledan" stage finish and the 15% hill leading up to it is often used by professional teams and keen amateur road cyclists for training. The route also features on the annual Tour de Bretagne. We are also only a few minutes from signed bike trails which are part of the European and French national cycle network.
In addition to fishing on and around Lac de Geurledan there are numerous smaller lakes and rivers within easy distance for fishermen to enjoy their sport.
In addition to the walking around the lake there are multiple walking trails near the cottages - whether it is a small walk from right outside the cottages (circular walks possible - ideal for runners and dog walking) or longer distance walking around the lake or on local moorland, there is plenty to do. For those looking for gentler walks or cycling, the tow-path of the Nantes-Brest canal can be accessed around 15 minutes from the cottages, and it’s possible to cycle or walk through very pleasant surroundings. The paths are spectacular in the autumn as the trees that provided shelter from the summer sun exhibit amazing displays of colour.
Within the local area are lots of craft courses, horse-riding, cooking courses, whilst visiting artists often run painting courses and pottery classes.

Further remarks

The cottages are well located to allow easy access to all that Brittany has to offer - guests have had day trips to Nantes, Mont St Michel and the Normandy beaches and D-Day museums too. Closer to us the local medieval towns of Pontivy, Josselin, Dinan are within easy distance, as are lesser known towns such as Morlaix or Concarneau. Brest, with its amazing aquarium and other attractions, or the Breton National Park are an easy drive from us. Brittany is a coastal region and with the cottages being centrally located it’s easy to get to any part of it for a day out; if beaches on the south coast get better weather one day - then head south, the following day it may be that the northern beaches have the best weather, in which case it’s easy to head there. As well as offering a great base to explore Brittany the cottages offer a lot to do locally, as well as lots to do and plenty of space on site if you just wish to have a relaxing break and enjoy the fresh country air - the well-equipped grounds are several acres in size.
