The house

  • Quiet, built-up area with some traffic

The APOLLON gîte is a pleasantly renovated lorraine house with a South-facing terrace, situated close to both the impressive Roman amphitheatre and the exceptional mosaic in the village of Grand, which was the most important Roman era sanctuary in North-Eastern Gaul, situated on a small plateau surrounded by forests. The gîte can sleep 9-13 people and it is possible to modulate the sleeping arrangements. Two baby cots are available (children under the age of 2 are not taken into account in the 9-13 people count). The gite has also been designed according to the "Tourisme et Handicaps" label, and it is possible for 4-5 persons in wheelchairs to occupy the ground floor. There are no steps on the ground floor and there is direct access to the sunny south facing terrace and closed garden, which is itself directly accessible from the private parking area. There are four bedrooms, an open-space lounge and dining area with a welcoming wood stove, that the kitchen opens on to. There is a laundry space, two bathrooms and two separate toilets. There is also a secure garage where you can put bikes with direct access to the gîte, and a barbecue. The gîte is ideal for small groups and families with plenty of walks ins the beautiful surrounding countryside and easy to visit sites, like the birthplace of Joan of Arc, the beautiful Meuse Valley, and plenty of surprising little places to discover.

Restaurants, food & wine

In Grand and very locally you will find egg, poultry, pork and beef producers who sell direct to customers. There is a homely restaurant in Grand (lunchtimes only), a well-reputed restaurant in Liffol-le-Grand (10kms) and a number of good restaurants as well as a cheese factory that sells direct in Neufchâteau (20kms). Grand has a small village shop that sells wine and can order most items on request. Locally, stores stock regional specialities such as madeleines, 'Toulois' wines, and products made with the famous 'mirabelle' plum.

Activities

The village of Grand stands alone in the middle of a high plain and is surrounded by fields and forest. There is a calm rural atmosphere and an attachment to the Lorraine region. The gite is located approximately 200m from the largest mosaic in Europe still in situ (232 m²), and approximately 400m from the impressive Roman amphitheatre that could hold 17000 people. Many relics from the Gallo-Roman period can still be seen all over the village. There are a great number of signposted walks and circuits in the area, some of which can be accessed directly from the gîte. The gîte is ideal for mixing calm relaxing evenings, roaming around the vast forests, limestone plateaux, green meadows and meandering Meuse Valley, and discovering the local history and culture. The village of Grand is very close to the western border of the Vosges, and is well-situated for visits to sites not only in the Vosges (the archeological museum in Liffol-le-Grand, Joan of Arc's birthplace in Domrémy-la-Pucelle, Renaissance buildings in Neufchâteau, the thermal towns of Contrexéville and Vittel), but also in the departments of the Meuse, the Haute-Marne, and the Meurthe-et-Moselle (the 'Porte de France' in Vaucouleurs, the famous 'madeleines' in Commercy, the UNESCO-listed 'Place Stanislas' in Nancy, the beaches and wildlife of the Lac du Der, the beautiful old hilltop town of Bourmont, the 'Charles de Gaulle Mémorial' museum and home in Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises...). Six roads lead out of Grand in just as many directions, so you can just drive out on whichever one takes your fancy ! You will find all the information you need in the gîte, and Joan is always on hand if you want extra information or have special interests or needs.
