The house
Le Fournie is a traditionally built house that has its origins in the 17th century. At that time, it served as a chestnut drying and bread bakery. Located on the hill Montbrandeix, surrounded by our 13 ha nature reserve, the gîte gives you fabulous, panoramic views of forests, hills, two of the many lakes in the area and a typical French village. It stands completely detached on the outside of the property and has a generous private garden ( wide views ) with a paved south terrace. Well-seated garden furniture, parasol, stone BBQ and outdoor lighting is available.
Here you can enjoy the sun or setting sun until late in the evening, which is sometimes spectacular.
At the end of our long driveway several walking, riding and cycling routes start.
On the ground floor of Le Fournie you will find a comfortably furnished living room with a double sofa, wood-burning stove, dining table with 3 chairs, internet connection, flat-screen TV with Canal Digital.
The gîte has a cosy open kitchen with 4-ring hob, microwave, fridge with freezer compartment, Nespresso & filter coffee machine and kettle.
Adjacent to the kitchen is the tastefully decorated bathroom with toilet.
Downstairs and upstairs are lit by 2 dimmable milk glass hanging lamps, which spread a pleasant light throughout the cottage.
The bedroom is accessed via a generous fixed wooden staircase with handrail. Upstairs from the balustrade you have a view of the living room, where partly the original chimney of the former bread oven is still visible.
The bedroom has a double bed with quality mattress, dimmable reading lights, two small side tables next to the bed. A chest of drawers and a possibility to hang clothes.
There are 3 windows: a Velux skylight with roller gauze screen and integrated blackout blind and the two mini windows, which are traditional for the building style in this region.
Le Fournie is a charming house, where many guests have already enjoyed spending their holidays.

The pretty village of La Chapelle Montbrandeix is located in the heart of "Hidden France", the region in the Limousin/Périgord Vert national park, on the edge of the Charente and Dordogne regions. In the surrounding area, you will find numerous chestnut forests, rolling hills and beautiful lakes, where you can sunbathe, swim, water sports and fish.
The trout-rich river "Le Bandiat" has its source just outside our grounds and meanders over our vast natural area, which consists of heathland, woods and meadows, inhabited by deer, squirrels, martens, foxes, wild boars and birds of various kinds such as the owl, cuckoo, hoopoe, falcon, buzzard and many songbirds. It is a pleasure to hear the nightingale sing its song, hidden in one of the century-old oaks.
On cloudless nights, you have a view of the overwhelming starry sky. With a long look, you can always see a shooting star. Good for a wish!
You are far away from busy tourism here. However, you will not lack for interesting excursions.
A post office and restaurant/bar are just a stone's throw away. Just a few kilometres away you will find more restaurants and supermarkets.
We have a permaculture-based vegetable garden with a variety of fruit and vegetables.
You can knock on our door daily for a fresh free-range egg.

Genoten van de groene rustige omgeving, de paarden en van het gerieflijk huisje. Lieve eigenaars ook met hun schattig hondje. Aanraders om te bezoeken op autoafstand is Brantôme, Bourdeilles, Oradour-sur-Glane, de markt op woensdag in Piégut Pluviers, het terrasje met paronamisch uitzicht bij het Château de Châlus-Chabrol..

Fijn huisje. Heerlijk rustig. We hadden mooi weer en hebben genoten van al het groen om ons heen en van alle vogelgeluiden. Ook een avond van de kookkunsten van Ellen genoten. Lekker en wel zo relaxed!

The region is known for the honest, tender meat of the Limousin cows, the foie gras, the chestnuts, the hams of the Cul-Noir pigs and the numerous edible mushrooms.

La Chapelle Montbrandeix - Ches Jules (five minute walk) good food, reservation required.
Saint Saud - Hostellerie St. Jacques. Well worth a visit if you like fine cuisine. A restaurant with artistic decor and beautiful outdoor garden.
Rochechouart - Hotel de France (member of the Logis chain) Terrace available. Delicious food, good cuisine.
Marval - les Feuillardiers. All year round plat de jour or à la carte (at lunchtime). For dinner in the evening, make a reservation. Basic fine French cuisine. Terrace available.
Champagnac la Rivière - la Gare. Large terrace outside. Good French cuisine.

Activities
The region is known for its castles and historical monuments, such as caves with prehistoric paintings. You can fish, canoe, swim and windsurf on the nearby rivers and lakes. There are several walking and cycling routes.
Walking : pilgrims route St. Jacques de Compostella, the GR 4 in the direct surroundings, 1 km from the gite. Others are GR 48 & 36.
Cycling : recommended is a bicycle/mountain bike with multiple gears, the roads are for the more trained cyclist.
You can also explore the surroundings with a rented electric bike. We are happy to help you with this.
Chalus and Nontron - electric bikes for hire
Swimming: Lake St. Estèphe, Milhaguet, Mialet, St. Mathieu, St Saud le Grand Lac.
Horse riding: recommended is Ecurie des Forêt in Cussac at 5 minutes distance. Contact can be arranged by us.
Golf
La Chapelle Montbrandeix lies on the "Richard Lionheart" route, in which several castles are included, including le chateau Montbrun in Dournazac. Three are within cycling distance.
The nearest large city is Limoges, capital of the Haute Vienne and the Limousin, famous for its porcelain. The "butcher's quarter" of Limoges has beautiful medieval buildings. Nice city for shopping ( La Fayette and Saint Martial ) terraces, aquarium, parks, botanical garden, architecture.
At only 15 minutes drive away you will find the village of Piégut Pluvier where, on Wednesday mornings, one of the most pleasant weekly markets in the area is held with a variety of regional products. Not to forget the other farmers' markets, brocantes, vide-greniers and French summer festivals.
Other places worth seeing
Rochechouart, on the outskirts is a beautiful chateau to visit as a museum of contemporary art. Good for a nice walk, also further on is a footpath lower down the hill.
Brantôme, situated in the Vallée de la Dronne on an island in a very picturesque river: the weekly market is on Friday morning. Furthermore, one can make a boat trip, rent a canoe or enjoy a plat du Jour close to the river Dronne.
Vallée de la Dronne with the castle town of Bourdeilles. In this secluded valley, there are quiet roads with sublimely restored watermills and secluded panoramas. A difficult to reach, but magnificent view is the Dronne at the waterfall of Saut du Chalard.
Périgueux, capital of the Dordogne, with the impressive cathedral Saint Font and the old city which is dominated by the medieval streets with here and there real city palaces. Pleasant shopping and many pleasant terraces.

Further remarks
Our domaine Montbrandeix is on the border with the Dordogne, without the hustle and bustle of the Dordogne, but with all sights and activities within your reach.
There is a second gîte La Fermette du Bandiat a good distance from Le Fournie. You can easily find it via Google.
Two high hedges and a wide yard guarantee the privacy of both houses.
