The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

Our gîte has its own terrace and flower garden looking out onto vineyards, cypresses and hills. There is a beautiful saltwater swimming pool in the property.
Inside, the gîte measures 75 square meters. On the first floor a spacious bedroom with a pretty view has a large double/twin beds (arranged to your liking) and a washbasin. On the same floor is a sitting room with a 2-person sofa bed, a 1-person sofa bed, TV + DVD (incl.some English-spoken channels), and a woodstove. Downstairs a Livingroom with well equipped kitchen opens on to the terrace. Adjacent is a shower room with a separate washbasin and wc. Our gîte has recently been renovated to a high standard. It has central heating. The open stairs make the gîte unsuitable for young children or persons with a handicap. Also, the pool does not have a fence but there is a cover of you need to close the pool for safety. In view of guests with allergies we prefer you not to bring pets. Smoking is not allowed in the gîte.

Surroundings

The gîte is a separate building next to our own house. Both houses are surrounded by a spacious garden offering splendid views on the 'Tuscany' of the South of France. It is surrounded by vineyards. The shared saltwater swimming pool (4 x 9 m) is mainly for use by our guests, as the owners are rarely around. The property is in Pech Salamou, a hamlet that is part of the commune of Donazac (Aude). It is located in the wine region Malepère, and next to the region of Limoux, where they produce a delicious sparkling wine: the Blanquette. In Pech Salamou itself there are two wine domains dating from the 18th century.
Especially in autumn, spring and early or late summer, the area offers great opportunities for walks with wonderful vistas of the Pyrenees. Limoux (8 km) is the nearest town, very charming, and typical for the south of France. Carcassonne (30 km), a united world heritage city, is close by with its own airport (Ryan Air). In the north-west direction lies Toulouse (80 km, Blagnac airport), reached by many airlines. It is also possible to fly to Montpellier, Béziers and Perpignan.

    TOP!

    TOP!
We enjoyed our stay immensely despite the bad weather. What a view, silence, peace and privacy, blissful! The cottage is equipped with everything and is very clean. The kitchen is amply equipped. It is a pity that the weather gods were a little less disposed towards us, so we could not enjoy the beautiful well-kept swimming pool. The check-in and check-out was very smooth and friendly. We can only recommend this holiday home. Trips to Carcassone, the gorge of Galamus and the cave of Cabrespine are definitely recommended. We will definitely come back to life and well-being.

We really enjoyed the cottage and the beautiful surroundings. It is beautifully situated on a mountain with views to all sides. The pool is lovely. The cottage is nicely cared for and clean. Everything you can think of in the kitchen is present. Especially from the oven we had a lot of fun for the delicious dishes that you can buy ready-made in France. The bed was also super. In short, we had a great time.

We enjoyed the stay. The cottage is next to, yet at a distance from the large house with lots of privacy. The pool is great. It is located on a mountain and you have a fantastic view. The cottage is spacious and clean with well equipped kitchen and everything you could possibly need. Limoux is barely a fifteen minute drive away where you have all the shops and terraces. It is centrally located to Carcassonne and Mirepoix. The reception was very hospitable. We enjoyed it.

Thank you very much for your lovely comment, we hope to see you again.

Restaurants, food & wine

The surrounding wine regions, Malepère, Limoux, Minervois, Caberdès and Corbières, produce good wines for reasonable prices. Wine-lovers will really enjoy visiting vineyards. In recent years the wines have received official recognition (appellations) and high ratings from connoisseurs. Along with this growing appreciation, restaurants offer a range of local wines, and some domains - like Gayda and Pennautier - have restaurants where their wines are served with the food. In Limoux, the 'Place de la République' is an attractive square where you can enjoy a meal or a drink.
The markets in the area (Limoux, Mirepoix, Espéraza and Carcassonne) are lively and authentic. Growers sell their own vegetables and poultry. One can also find textiles and other local products. In summer there are many antiques markets and so-called vide-greniers (the equivalent of English car boot sales).
The region is known as the 'land of the Cathars'. Especially worth visiting are a.o.: the old city of Carcassonne and the forts of Queribus and Peyrepertuse.
Narbonne and Toulouse are among the cities with interesting museums and beautiful old churches.

Activities

There are lots of local walks through the countryside, several starting from the gîte.
You may also enjoy swimming in the nearby lakes, Lac Monbel, Lac de la Cavayère, Lac de Puivert, ……. and rivers Aude and Galamus. In the Aude, near Alet-les-Bains for example, canoeing is also possible. Within an hour's drive, you will find the Mediterranean coast with its relatively quiet coastal villages between Narbonne and Perpignan. The trip to the coast itself, through the Corbières, is very worthwhile.
Cycling is a real challenge. You will encounter some steep hills, but with a good racing or mountain bike, or an electric bike, it can be done. For the less energetic cyclists, a ride along side the Canal du Midi may be more appealing.
The Pyrenees, 40-80 km away, offer many possibilities for hiking and bird watching.

At the request of our guests we introduced a guestbook in 2012. We were pleasantly surprised by the many positive (and to be honest, no negative) comments we have received since. To quote a few:
- 'We have really enjoyed 14 days of rest and the super swimming pool....The gîte is tip top...(Koen, Karin and Amber, BE)
- 'We really felt at ease here, the gîte perfectly met our expectations, all the comfort, the spacious rooms, the Belgian channels, wifi, the beautiful view in this lovely and quiet area, ....the Gorges de Galamus and the ruins of Peyrepertuse are highly recommended!' (Geert, Heidi, Robbe and Jelle, BE)
- 'Gîte Pech Salamou is a lovely house in a beautiful part of France...We have enjoyed our week very much and would love to return. Do not change a thing, it's perfect as it is!' (Jenny, Dave and Rebecca, UK)
- 'This is a super cool gîte! Everything is there: a warm welcome, all the equipment, and above all a splendid view...' (Sanne and Rolf, BE)
- 'We had a wonderful time, thanks for everything, see you again....' (Pam and Trevor, UK)
- We had lovely walks along the sunflowers and grapevines. Thanks a lot, we've spent a wonderful holiday at your gîte (fam. Goossen, NE)
- 'a fantastic swimming pool and a nice house (Lou, 8, BE)
One family rated us using a Belgian tv programme raking. They gave us the highest ranking (= 5 beds) in all categories: hospitality, accommodation, environment, hygiene and view. And the years after, we were rated again, by two other families (all 5 beds).
All these compliments stimulate us to maintain our high standards and to improve our facilities. Recently a central heating system has been installed. In spring and autumn the gîte is now comfortably warm.
