A newly available and spacious 2 Bedroom Apartment with a Private Pool.. This apartment is in a village setting 15 minutes from the Mediterranean & 30 minutes from the Spanish border or the beautiful city of Perpignan. It is located very close to the centre of Laroque des Alberes in the Pyrenees Orientales department of the former Languedoc Roussillon region now known as Occitanie. It is an open plan apartment with a well equipped kitchen, large dining table and lounge area. Outside there is a large pool terrace and exclusive use of the 7.6m x 3.8m pool.
Two french windows into the property from the terrace provide a private entrance for guests and can be opened up during the summer to allow easy access to the pool terrace for a bit of al fresco dining or to just relax by the pool.

Kitchen and dining : The kitchen is well equipped with all the usual facilities you would find at home. There is a gas hob, electric oven, a dishwasher and plenty of standard kitchen equipment such as microwave, kettle, toaster etc. The dining table is located in the kitchen and is an integral part of the open plan kitchen, dining and living area. Weather permitting (which is most of the time) the living area can be extended out onto the substantial pool terrace.
We offer our guests pretty much everything they need to make their stay a home from home experience. So if you like to cook and entertain yourselves, you can do that in privacy knowing you have all the equipment you need to prepare a delicious meal.
Living rooms: The living room is also part of the open plan living area and comes with tv, dvd player, cd player and a comfortable sofa and chairs. There are also books and a small selection of cd's and dvd's to chose from. You are also welcome to bring your entertainment and you can connect to our wi-fi for internet access to the various services you normally enjoy. Assuming they are available in France.
Bedrooms
The master bedroom is set up as a double room, with a wardrobe and general storage space. The utility room is off the master bedroom for washing facilities and extra storage, but it can of course be closed off when access is not required.
The second bedroom is set up as a twin room, again with a wardrobe and general storage.
The beds are comfortable and the bedrooms are well insulated to keep them cool in summer and warm in winter. There is also a hair dryer available for convenience and a cooling fan in each bedroom for those warm evenings.
Bathrooms
The bathroom is very luxurious and spacious, with a good sized bath, separate shower vanity cabinet and wc. It is modern and finished to a high standard.
There are options to allow you to chose how the bathroom is lit or you may even chose to simply light a couple of candles and really chill out in the tub.

Heating
The heating is all electric and can be turned on or off as required. There is one in each bedroom, a large towel dryer in the bathroom and 2 more heaters in the living area during the winter months.

Entertainment
You will have access to tv, music and a dvd player as previously mentioned. But generally in these modern times many people tend to bring their entertainment with them as long as they have access to the Internet, which there is of course through our wi-fi connection.

Of course if you prefer an old fashioned approach to your entertainment, there will be a selection of various games to choose from and playing cards. And of course the aforementioned books. We also have no problem with guests taking a book away with them if it is not finished, providing another one is left in its place.

Garden and outside
We are in a village so we do have neighbours, but the fences have been screened for privacy and the pool is set in a 100m2 terrace.

There are loungers to relax
by the pool and an outdoor table with chairs for al fresco dining. There are shady spots when the sun gets too hot and a number of parasols so you can position your shade as you like it.

The garden is Mediterranean style with lots of gravel beds, pots and cacti, grass doesn't fair too well in this part of France, but the cacti do very well.

Visitor suitability
Generally we prefer that the apartment is only used by paying guests, but we don't mind one or 2 guests occasionally as long as consideration is made for the neighbours and we will of course be the nearest neighbours.

Information about any additional facilities
The utility room comes with an automatic washing machine, ironing board and iron plus a large airer for drying.

This is the perfect location for a holiday destination, only 15 minutes from the Mediterranean, 30 minutes from the Spanish border or the city of Perpignan and the apartment is just under a 10 minute walk to the village centre of Laroque des Alberes. An all year around lively and vibrant village with all the amenities you could want on holiday, including a lovely bakery for fresh bread, lots of bars and restaurants and plenty of activities for everyone. All in easy walking distance.

There are fabulous places to visit such as the very famous fishing village of Collioure and its immediate neighbour Port Vendres. A little further away, near Thuir and you will find Castelnou an ancient medieval village with cobblestone streets and lovely restaurants for taking a leisurely lunch or dinner whilst admiring the amazing views across the mountainous terrain.

Argeles sur Mer is the nearest coastal resort which is a 15 minute drive and where you can join the corniche that follows the coastline all the way to Cerbere, the border crossing into Spain. Take this route and you will pass through Collioure, Port Vendres and Banyuls Sur Mer on the way. All lovely towns and villages in their own right.

We had a wonderful stay at Laroque-des-Albères. The apartment is spacious en very well equipped with everything you need. You have your own entrance and would hardly notice that the owners live in the same building. The garden is very nice, with enough space in the shade as well as in the sun, and enough chairs and sunbeds. Brian and Angela made sure that everything was very nicely in order including the great swimming pool! Our boys (9 and 5 years old) loved it! Laroque-des-Albères is a very nice village, authentic and with several nice restaurants. Within a 10 minute walk you are in the centre to buy fresh croissants and baguette! In the area are a lot of options to spend your time (beach, hiking in the mountains, nice villages). If we come back to Laroque we would be happy to stay at the apartment again!

We have had a wonderful stay at this gites. Everything was super! Lots of sightseeing to do or just do nothing and relax and stay at the apartment. Great Restaurants and bars on walking distance. Minor point of attention is the double bed, it is a bit small. Everything else was great. The house was very clean. Bathroom very spacious, well equipped kitchen, and lovely swimming pool. Also a beautiful garden, the hondeysuckle (I think this is the English name, in Dutch it is a kamperfoelie) smelled wonderful.
Love to come back some day!

Thank you Brian and Angela for the hospitality.

    Kind regards,
    Marielle & Joost and Sophie

Restaurants, food & wine

Cafe des Artistes - One of our favourite bars come restaurants. Probably because we love to watch the big sports matches while sipping a nice cool Guinness. That aside the food is really very good and the ambiance beyond question in this perfect mix of Mediterranean and Irish culture.

Les Enfants Terribles - Another lovely restaurant which is strictly food and drink with a French/Canadian influence. Located right on the side of the main road through the centre it is very easy to find and has a lovely little terrace outside for the warm season and a cosy interior for winter. Good value, great food.

Cote Saisons - A Michelin rated restaurant that offers fabulous food but not at an outrageous price. Perhaps a little more expensive than some of the other restuarants but I doubt, if you choose to eat here, you will be disappointed. We definitely weren’t and it is highly recommended, but book early it is often full.

Le Catalan - A little further from the town centre at the foot of the church. A short climb, but it is worth the effort. Rated at 4.5 stars on Trip Adviser with a lot of reviews, it is very popular for the local French cuisine and choice of good local wines. If you want a truly local French experience this is a good place to go.

Aside from these eating places there is a pizzeria and two tapas bars as well as a Wednesday morning market, boulangerie, epicerie, and charcuterie if you fancy making your own home cooked food. And that is all in easy walking distance of the apartment. But you can of course head off to many other lovely places to explore the restaurants and facilities on offer all around Laroque des Alberes.

Activities

Being so lose to the 'Massif des Alberes' of the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean coastline and the Spanish border there are a lot of options for hiking, cycling, playing golf, water sports and many other activities. Not to mention dining out and sightseeing in one of the most beautiful regions of France and the Costa Brava of Spain.

  • Bicycle
  • Near hiking trails
  • Near riding
  • Water sports

Further remarks

Laroque des Alberes truly is a centre of activity during the summer, there is entertainment of one sort or another almost every evening in the height of the season. From discos, to live bands to gourmet food markets all making great use of the outside auditorium in the village centre.
