The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some traffic

The gîte is a 170 m² detached wooden house, designed and built by the owner (an artisan carpenter). It follows the principles of the bio-climatic house: (design and exposure, natural materials, insulation and cladding, solar collectors and wood heating). The interior layout and decoration are contemporary, so it's not a chalet. The house is very light and quiet. It is set in grounds with trees all around but not fenced, with no direct neighbours or nearby roads. There is a natural swimming pool with bio-mechanical treatment, allowing you to swim in an intimate setting surrounded by bamboo, aquatic plants and frogs.

The ground floor (66m²) is in one piece and comprises an entrance hall, an open-plan kitchen (eclectic oven, 4-burner gas hob, dishwasher, toaster, electric kettle, fridge and freezer, as well as cupboards and crockery), a sitting room with a wood-burning stove, a TV area (digital reception, hi-fi audio system) and an office area (unlimited internet connection and 3-access WiFi throughout the house). A veranda with several bay windows, facing south/south-west (20m²) serves as a games room (Belgian billiards), and opens onto two wooden terraces, also 20m² each with tables and chairs. To the north is a 30 m² storage area (for bikes or other accessories), a small room with solar water heater, washing machine and tumble dryer, and a 5 m² shower room with shower, toilet and washbasin.

The first floor comprises a corridor leading to three bedrooms of 25 m², 16 m² and 16 m² respectively (three double beds including 1 waterbed, bedside table and lamp and sheets for each, an overhead projector and a wall screen) and a 15 m² bathroom with bath, washbasin and toilet (not including towels).

The house and bedrooms are insulated with wood-fibre insulation, and a range of covering and decorative materials have been used: wood, clay, stucco (natural limewax coating), waxed concrete, plaster and 'organic' paints.
The tone of the ground floor is rather colourful due to the furniture and wall compositions, despite the neutrality of the wall renderings, while the first floor is largely in various shades of grey.

Vaour is a village of around 300 inhabitants, at the crossroads of the Gaillacois vineyards, the Albigensian bastides (Penne, Castelnau de Montmirail, Puycelsi, Bruniquel...), small medieval towns (Cordes sur ciel, St antonin noble val...) and large cities such as Albi, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Montauban 35 minutes away by car and Toulouse an hour away.

The house is located two minutes' walk from the village, in a quiet, discreet and protected spot on a long-distance footpath, which is accessible to cars for the first 50 metres leading to the house. The 3659 m² plot is bordered all around by vegetation and is therefore totally protected from the 3 neighbouring houses, the closest of which is 300 m away. Several species of trees, fruit trees, a vegetable garden, a table tennis table and a natural swimming pool, treated by pumps and bio-mechanical filters, with frogs and aquatic plants.

Restaurants, food & wine

Vaour is located in the Gaillacois vineyards, so there is no need to specify the possibilities: visits to the cellars, walks in the vineyards and tasting as a reward, from white to red, via rosé and sparkling white, whether traditional or natural wines.

The meadows of Vaour and the surrounding area are suitable for breeding and not for cultivation, and most of them are organically grown. Thus, many producers are installed there and propose visits to the farm, with there again, educational ballads, tastings and sale of products (goat cheese, black pig, cooked pork meats and bovine meat, artisanal preserves of duck and other). Botanical workshops on cooking and plants are offered in the "jardin d'emmerveille", a greenhouse at the entrance to the village.

Vaour has a farmers' market on Thursday mornings, Cordes on Saturdays, St Antonin on Sundays and Castelnau de Montmirail on Tuesdays.

A bar-restaurant is about to reopen in the village, at the Relais des Templiers during the summer. The café Atmosphère offers themed evenings on Friday evenings, world cuisine meals, meetings or simply discussions over a drink or playing cards in a warm, associative and open atmosphere.
Various restaurants, from snack bars to gourmet restaurants, are located within a 15 km radius of the village.

Activities

Vaour is situated at an altitude of 425 m, the hilly environment is made up of meadows and numerous forests of fir trees, chestnut trees and oak trees, the largest of which, La Grésigne (10 minutes by car or a little further on foot) covers several hectares. There are many walks in the forest but also through the listed villages and ruined mills, whether on foot, mountain bike or horseback (there are several riding schools nearby).
Vaour has a subsoil full of galleries and underground rivers, which makes it possible to discover speleology (a club exists in Penne, 10' by car). The Roc d'Anglar, 10 minutes drive away, between Vaour and St Antonin noble Val is a limestone cliff overhanging the Aveyron river which offers over 100 climbing routes. The river, surrounded by its gorges, offers canoeing, fishing and swimming. More traditional sports and leisure activities are available in Penne and Cordes sur ciel (tennis), Gallaic, Montauban and Albi (swimming pools, squash...).

On the cultural level, Vaour has a Templar commandery that can be visited, Penne is overlooked by the ruins of a castle illuminated some evenings with historical commentary and sound compositions. The place can also be visited. The many neighbouring villages, of which Cordes sur ciel is the best known, offer various medieval and other events, music and theatre festivals.

In August in Vaour and for more than 25 years, the village is transformed for a week into a place centred around the "theatre of laughter", with free and paying shows, of quality, aperitif-concerts, refreshments and catering with local producers, all in the green of the meadow or on the village square but always in front of the setting sun.

Albi, among other things, is famous for its architecture, its imposing cathedral and the Toulouse Lautrec museum, the river Tarn in its turn, like Montauban also for its typical red brick architecture, the Ingres museum and the Garonne river which flows through it.
Theatres and cinemas can be found within a 25 km radius, the closest of which is in St Antonin noble val, an art house cinema showing films in their original version.
