The house

  • Quiet, built-up area with some traffic

The gîte Quasimodo is located in small cul-de-sac, Impasse Notre Dame, right in the centre of the old historic town of Baugé right behind the church.
Enjoy the peace in the spacious green garden but also walk to the cosy centre in 2 minutes. Here you will find bakeries, shops, the market, the Château and restaurants and terraces.
The holiday home is part of an old girls' school, is spacious and has an enclosed garden with a large garden table, chairs for lazing and a bbq.
On the ground floor is the kitchen/living room with a door to the garden, and in the hallway a toilet.
This living area comprises a well-equipped kitchen with dishwasher and oven.
On the 1st floor are 2 bedrooms, 1 with a double bed and 1 with 2 single beds. The toilet on the hallway is separate from the bathroom where the shower and sink are located.
A cot with bedding and a highchair are available.
In the Impasse, cars are only allowed to stop for loading and unloading but there are plenty of parking spaces nearby.
Pets are allowed after consultation, smoking inside is not allowed.
The house has electric heaters for off-season use. Their cost is charged separately.

Restaurants, food & wine

The Loire region is known for its many vineyards.
The Chinon, Muscadet, Ancenis, Crémant de Loire, Savennières,Vouvray, Sancerre, Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil, Anjou-Saumur, Touraine-Amboise and Chenonceau to name a few.
The wines are, of course, for sale everywhere but you can also visit a winery.
The most famous wine houses are Ackerman, Veuve Amiot, Bouvet Ladubay and Gratien & Meyer but there are many more.
In Saint-Barthélemy-d'Anjou, orange brandy is produced, the well-known Cointreau.
The lesser known mint liqueur Menthe Pastille Giffard and cherry liqueur Guignolet are distilled in the Loire Valley.

But the Maine-et-Loire also produces other goodies!
As in all of France, the region has its own cheeses, such as the De Galet de la Loire, Curé Nantais and Carré dÄnjou. But the region is especially known for its goat cheeses such as Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine, Selles-sur-Cher and Bûchette d' Anjou.
Other regional products are for instance rillaud (pieces of pork breast preserved in the fat), fried eel, plum pâté, fouaces (filled rolls from the oven), Quernon d'ardoise (a flat piece of crispy nougatine covered in blue chocolate) and the topper is a light dessert, the Crémet d'Anjou, a mixture of quark, whipped cream and stiffly whipped egg white with a coulis of red fruit.

In France, eating out is more normal than in the Netherlands. Many employees have lunch in a bistro between noon and 2.30pm. They are also usually only open in the afternoon. In a bistro simple cheap traditional meals are served. Good food for little money. It is very cosy to eat in a bistro, you will meet many local people there.
There are plenty of restaurants, brasseries and snack bars. From a French star restaurant, Italian and Thai to a kebab sandwich.
After lunch, many restaurants, bistros and brasseries close down for dinner in the evening.

A must in summer are the Guinguettes. These are pop-up restaurants by the water in the flood plain. In this meadow, there are picnic tables where you can bring your own food, where children have room to play and where you can also order food and drinks. In the weekend, bands often play there and many families come to eat, drink, dance and play.

Activities

Baugé is a small cosy town that is the centre of the municipality of Baugé en Anjou in the Maine et Loire department (Pays de la Loire region).
The village has a population of 3772 and has much to offer.

In the centre you will find the Château built by King René, le bon Roi.
The tourist office is located here but the Château itself can also be visited.
Just behind the Château you can visit the "apothicairerie de Baugé", formerly a shelter for sick and confused people with its own beautiful old pharmacy.
At the nuns' house, "la Vraie Croix d'Anjou" can be admired and the story behind it. A cross encrusted with many precious stones that is back in Baugé from 1790.
Within walking distance are shops, banks, pharmacies, a cinema and restaurants and cafés. A simple pizza or kebab is among the options but the top restaurant O'Prestige is also well worth a visit.
Next to the Baugé campsite are an outdoor swimming pool and a fishing pond.
There is a golf course and a music/theatre centre and in summer there are several festivals (fete de la musique, 14 July, Easter market etc)

Maine and Loire is named after the rivers that flow through the department.
The region is perfect for lovely walks and bike rides in the beautiful nature and around these rivers.
The voie verte, also known as the 'green cycle paths', is an extensive network of cycle paths. They run along rivers, canals, over old towpaths and through nature reserves.
The paths are relatively flat, making them easily accessible. France's green cycle paths are constantly being expanded and interconnections are being built.
The cycle route "La Loire à Vélo" lets you discover beautiful spots along the Loire on car-free cycle paths and quiet interior roads. The Loire Valley is a Unesco World Heritage Site and the Loire between Saumur and Angers is one of the most beautiful stretches of the entire river.
Along the way, choose a "Guinguette" to rest and have a bite to eat or a small lake to take a refreshing dip and lie on the beach.

Between Angers and Saumur, you will come across many vineyards making delicious red and white wine and the widely known Anjou rosé.
A wine tasting at the famous wineries is not to be missed !
Maine-et-Loire is a beautiful region with a rich history. You can still taste it in many villages and towns through the numerous castles and old buildings. Angers, Saumur, Le Mans or Tours can be reached within an hour and all have their own charm, museums, parks and shopping areas. Tour all the villages with the twisted church towers, the " Clocher Tors" , visit an estate, cosy market, amusement park or flea market.
There are also 2 wonderful zoos in the area.
La Flêche and Doué la Fontaine are among the most beautiful in Europe.

Further remarks

We found the old girls' school in the Impasse Notre Dame in Baugé for sale on a notary's website.
This turned out to be a huge property with a lot of work to be done, exactly what we were looking for.
We decided to make an offer and this was immediately accepted and in June 2015 we became the owners.
We first started inquiring in the neighbourhood about the history of the property. It turned out that the property was used to accommodate young girls.
Half of the property was for girls from well-off parents who could enjoy a basic education here. These girls stayed here during the week, returning home at the weekend.
The girls from poor families or whose parents had died stayed here permanently. So they were in another part of the house, received less education but worked in the house to pay for their stay. All this under the "friendly" guidance of the Des soeurs of L'Association Anne de la Girouardière.

At that time, we worked as gardiens at a château in Cheviré le Rouge. We thought we could combine renovating the property with our work but after a few years the renovation didn't really work out.
We moved to Baugé in 2019 and quit our jobs.
We had refurbished part of the property enough to live there ourselves and we then started to refurbish the 1st part of the property into a 4 person gite.
We also had to work outside the house to bring in money, Dick again as a guardian on an estate and Dorrit in care for the mentally handicapped.
The work went a bit faster now and in 2021 we could start renting out the house.
We hope to be able to combine our work outside with the letting and further renovation plans.
There will be 2 more hotel rooms and the gîte will be extended with an extra room and bathroom in the attic to make it a 6 person holiday home.
When it is ready, the large room can be rented for any activity.
The private area will also have to be renovated, but we are not sure when that will be.
