The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

The Manoir has been recently fully renovated and has 4 large, en suite bedrooms, spacious reception rooms and yet retains much character of its original features. The oldest part of the building was constructed from local slate and tuffeau stone in the 16th century and the recent renovation work has kept true to these traditional materials. The main staircase winds up to the second floor inside the large tower on the front of the house.
Three of the en suite bedrooms have a (UK) king-sized bed with Egyptian cotton linen, goose-down duvet and Hypnos mattress. The ground=floor bedroom has a (UK) Super King-sized bed with Emma mattress. All are equipped with a flat screen television with French channels and Freesat box (UK channels). Hypoallergenic bedding is available on request. Le Roi is in the oldest part of the house, dating back to the 16th century. The original terracotta floor tiles have been retained and there are beams throughout. The bathroom is huge and features a large walk-in shower, elegant free-standing bath and double basins. La Reine is in the newer wing of the Manoir, dating back to the 17th century. The midnight blue velvet king sized bed has a Hypnos mattress. The spacious bathroom has a large walk-in shower and double basins. Le Dauphin is on the top floor of the newer wing of the Manoir, dating back to the 17th century. This beamed room has an oak, linen-upholstered king sized bed. The bathroom has double basins and a roll-top bath. Le Chevalier is on the ground floor in the oldest part of the house and has it’s own door to access the garden. The bathroom has a large walk-in shower and a secret door out to a courtyard garden. Two pull-out beds are available to put into either Le Roi, La Reine or Le Chevalier bedrooms, for children to sleep on.

The double height upstairs salon has a large fireplace with a logburner and comfortable sofas and armchairs. The bookcases are filled with a well-thumbed library and you are welcome to borrow books, or take one in exchange for the one you have finished. There is a tv with French and UK Freesat channels. The large kitchen has a professional range cooker, double-door fridge and all the modern kitchen gadgets you could need. The dining room is next door and can seat up to 10 people at the table in front of an impressive working fireplace. A washing machine and tumble drier are available to guests in the laundry room.
In the garden is a fully enclosed unheated salt water swimming pool. Take it easy with a cool drink on the pool-side deck or explore 2 hectares of oak woodlands and orchards on the grounds. The lawn is ideal for children to play safely. There is space for up to 5 cars to park in the grounds.

Manoir de Jouralem and its chapel are set in 8 hectares of gardens and oak woodland between Nantes and Tours, in the heart of the Anjou wine-country of the Loire Valley. Views from the house extend across neighbouring bio-dynamic vineyards and countryside. The pretty villages of Blaison and Saint Saturnin-sur-Loire are both 3km away and between them offer a great bakery, two village bistrots, a delicatessen and tea rooms. The closest town is 6km away at Brissac-Quincé - home to France's tallest château and plenty more! The Manoir is just 4km from the Loire river, 24km from Angers and 31km from Saumur.

Restaurants, food & wine

Be spoiled for choice when it comes to lovely wine here! There are many good quality vineyards close by which offer tastings, the closest being an excellent bio-dynamic vineyard just 300m away. Loire Valley wines represent a wonderful diversity for all tastes - red wines of Saumur Champigny and Chinon, whites from Vouvray and Savonnières, succulent sweet wines from Coteaux de Layon and the delicious Crémant de Loire bubbles from Saumur!
Often referred to as the garden of France, the Loire Valley produces an abundance of wonderful produce. There are plenty of places for foodie-fans to explore near to the Manoir - Brissac (6km away) has a great deli, fabulous bakery, artisan cheese shop and organic grocers; Angers has much, much more!
Le Petit Blaison - This is a lovely bistrot restaurant serving freshly cooked local dishes; our closest at just 2.5km.
Bistrot de Sat - There is a lovely terrace at this village bistrot and they serve typically french dishes and local beers.
L'Ardoise - A deli, wine bar and café in one! This is a very friendly place in Brissac selling lovely local foods and excellent quality wines. Nicholas makes a mean hot chocolate! He also speaks great English.
Aux Deux Terraces - Also in Brissac, this is our favourite. Hosts Arnaud and Maria are keen to serve fresh, locally sourced ingredients and they produce inventive dishes. French cuisine with a fresh, modern twist. 7km – 9 mins in the car, 22 mins by bike.
La Route du Sel at Le Thoureil - One of our favourites, this quality restaurant is located in a very pretty village right by the Loire. They serve fresh local produce and of course fish and they home make their own pasta. They call themselves a guinguette, but they are much more refined. 11.4km – 38 mins on the bike or 14 mins in the car.
La Promenade at St Mathurin sur Loire -This place has great reviews. They have a great spot on the north side of the Loire. 10km – 11 mins by car, 30 mins by bike
There are six Michellin-starred restaurants within 60km of the Manoir, four of which are in Angers. In the reception room in the Manoir is a desk full of guide books and cards for restaurants and vineyards to visit.

Activities

Château de Brissac - France's tallest château is at Brissac-Quincé, our closest town (6km). The château and extensive grounds are open to the public.
L'Étang Parc de Loisirs - This is a lovely water and activity park for all ages of kids! There are swimming lakes, waterslides, inflatables, pony and donkey rides, picnic areas, café.... and lots more! The park is under 6km from the Manoir.
Saumur - Take the scenic, river-side drive to Saumur (approx 30km, 35 minutes by car). It's a lovely town with a very impressive château. The area is famous for it's excellent wines (Crémant de Loire, Saumur-Champigny to name but a few), and is the home of France's cavalry school, Le Cadre Noir. The town is full of tempting restaurants and interesting shops.
Angers - Just a 25 minute drive away from the Manoir, Angers is a vibrant university city. There are plenty of great restaurants and independent boutiques. The imposing château is a must-see - it houses a very impressive tapestry and boasts fantastic views over the Maine river.

The gardens are vast, planted according to themes and provide lots of interactive information. The cafés and restaurant serve good quality snacks and meals. Approx 30km, 25 mins by car.
