The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

Domaine du Crestet is an old wine estate, located 35 kilometres east of the River Rhône and three kilometres south of the Roman town of Vaison la Romaine, famous for its amphitheatre and excavations.

It consists of four Provençal-style, nineteenth-century buildings around a central courtyard, recently renovated. The location is unique: in the middle of a green valley among vineyards with an unobstructed view in all directions, including the Mont Ventoux and the medieval village of Crestet. The village is within walking distance, as are the rocky beaches on the river Ouvèze. Seventy metres away is the restaurant La Loupiote, which offers excellent local menus at reasonable prices. 200m from the Domaine you will find the bakery (boulangerie artisanale) with fresh croissants every morning. The slightly more luxurious restaurant l'Epicurien is 900m away.

In three of the buildings are six stylish holiday homes (for 4-5 persons: Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Olivier and for 8 persons: Murier and Viognier) have been created, offering guests a high level of luxury in an authentic Provençal setting.
The Murier house has all rooms at ground floor level, i.e. a maximum of 4 steps between the various rooms. There is a spacious living room with a large fireplace, a separate dining kitchen, 3 bedrooms (one with a double bed, one with two single beds and one large one with two single beds and a bunk bed), toilet, bathroom with bathtub/shower and second toilet en suite in the master bedroom. In one bedroom there is a mezzanine, where 1 extra sleeping place is possible. All rooms have high beamed ceilings. The single beds can be joined together. Outside there is a spacious terrace with garden overlooking Crestet, the vineyard and Mont Ventoux.

Murier has its own entrance, parking (2 cars), spacious private terrace with bbq on the south, 2nd terrace on the west, sun protection, shade tree, dining table and loungers, garden on the south and west with views on Crestet, the vineyard and the Mont Ventoux. The house is equipped with: satellite TV, DVD, Radio/CD player, washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, oven/microwave/grill, very complete kitchen equipment, excellent beds, WIFI, parasol, bbq etc. There is central heating in the houses and the fireplace (free firewood available).

Wine excursion, swimming pool, tennis, walking, cycling:

A large swimming pool (12x7m plus 3x3m) with sun loungers in the grounds surrounded by lavender and vines, a boule court and playing field, and a tennis court within walking distance offer the necessary relaxation. In the immediate vicinity are extensive hiking and biking possibilities: Dentelles de Montmirail, Mont Ventoux, valley of the Toulourenc. You can also walk directly from the Domaine into the vineyard or hike or bike the surrounding hills both on the road and on the many paths with your mountain bike.
You can also take part in a wine buying excursion on request (spring and autumn).
Our grapes go to Cave La Romaine in Vaison who produce among others a delicious rosé AOC Côte du Ventoux. In September you can pick the grapes for your own table.
On the grounds there is a large parking lot and you will find the typical Provencal vegetation: lavender, olive and fig trees, rosemary, thyme, palm, bamboo, yucca etc.

The domaine is less suitable for large groups. There is no central common room. A group can rent no more than 3 houses and consist of no more than 12 people.

The village of Le Crestet
Le Crestet (440 inhabitants) is a small historic protected village on the top of a ridge. It is surrounded by vineyards, olive and almond trees and has many narrow streets with beautiful architecture. The Financial Times described it as one of the best preserved medieval villages in Provence: "Crestet is one of the enchanting and best preserved medieval hill-villages in all Provence".
At the top of the village is a small castle with a square that gives a beautiful view over the valley, the Mont Ventoux and Domaine du Crestet.

Not only the location in the green valley, but also the further surroundings make Domaine du Crestet unique.
Three kilometres north lies the old city of Vaison la Romaine (+6000 inhabitants), with a rich history from the time of the Celts and the Romans. One can visit the Roman excavations and the open air theatre from the first century, where in summer many performances are given. The 12th century castle of the counts of Toulouse overlooks the oldest part of the city.
.
To the south are the famous cities of Avignon (45 min) and Orange (30 min). The latter is known for its magnificent Roman open-air theatre, Avignon for its "pont" and the Palais des Papes. Both cities offer several golf courses. Carpentras (30 min.) is known for its truffle trade and a large flea market on Sundays.
Directly in the east are the foothills of the Alps with the most dominant mountain being the Mont Ventoux (1912 metres high), visible from the estate. This mountain, known from the Tour de France, offers many walking and cycling opportunities in summer and in winter skiing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing with breathtaking views in the village of Mont Serein. With its green covered foot and bare top, the mountain offers a different colourful image at any time of the day. At the base of Mont Ventoux is the canyon of the Toulourenc River, a beautiful piece of nature for river walks and picnics on small beaches overlooking impressive rock formations.
Superdevoluy offers a larger skiing area at about a two-hour drive to the east, in an hour and a half you are on the beach at the Mediterranean Sea or making a canoe trip through the canyon of the river Ardêche.

Climate
The valley has a very mild climate with more than three hundred days of sunshine per year and temperatures of 25 to 32 C in July and August. In spring and autumn the temperatures are around 20 C. The winters are characterised by cold nights, during the day the sun and clear blue skies dominate with temperatures of 10-15 C.

Restaurants, food & wine

Le Crestet is part of the Côtes du Ventoux wine region and lies on the border with the Côtes du Rhône. The Côtes du Ventoux produces soft wines that taste good when young. The production consists of 90 percent red wine and 7 percent rosé. Domaine du Crestet delivers the grapes for the appellation d'origine controlée (AOC) Côtes du Ventoux to the cave coopérative of Vaison la Romaine. The important crus Gigondas, Rasteau , Beaumes de Venise and Vacqueyras of the Côtes du Rhône can be visited within 25 min. drive. Chateauneuf du Pape is 35 min. drive away.
On request we organise excursions to taste and buy wines from the surrounding caves.
Our grapes go to Cave La Romaine in Vaison who make a delicious rosé AOC Côte du Ventoux, which is ready for you upon arrival. In September you can pick the grapes yourself in front of your own table. As long as the weather permits, which is almost every week from May to October, we organise a welcome drink on Saturday for all guests at the edge of the vineyard.

Within walking distance of the Domaine you will find 2 restaurants and another 20 within 15 minutes drive.
In Vaison you will find a number of culinary shops and a very large bio food shop.

Activities

Many hiking trails start from the Domaine to the Dentelles de Montmirail . The Baronnies and the Mont Ventoux (1912 m) offer many more hiking possibilities. The area is very popular with sports cycling enthusiasts, including the ascent of the legendary Mont Ventoux (Tour de France). Bicycles can be rented in Vaison-la-Romaine at Chave.

The villa is located 8 km from the start (Malaucène) of the ascent of Mont Ventoux. This approach route is almost flat and provides a good warm-up!

Nearby there are babbling rivers with small beaches: the Toulourenc canyon, and Les Trois Rivières are the highlight.

On Tuesdays, Vaison-la-Romaine offers the most beautiful and largest Provençal weekly market in the wide area. Two small theatres, a roman amphi-theatre, two museums, many roman and medieval monuments, many festivals, a cosy market square with many terraces both offer a lot to the visitor. A little further away is Avignon with the famous Palais des Papes, many museums, theatres and an opera and Orange with the largest Roman amphi-theatre outside Italy.
Our guests regularly say: one week here is far too little!
