The house

  • Quiet, built-up area

Aux Remparts is situated in the well-known town of Gigondas, set against its medieval fortress. This 16th century house is comfortable and tastefully furnished. On the ground floor there is the lounge with TV, DVD, a music installation and many books to read. On the first floor you will find the open plan kitchen with French windows from which you'll have a stunning view. Next to the kitchen there are two adjacent bedrooms, connected by a door, and a small bathroom with shower and toilet. Outside there is sunshine all day long; sit and enjoy the view on the village, the Dentelles de Montmirail and the castle of which the house once made part of. The village offers amenities like a grocery with daily fresh bread, a post office, bars and 2 restaurants with a terrace. More shops like a butcher and larger supermarkets are at a few miles.

The ground floor is also available, sleeps 2-4. With balcony, garden, large lounge, bathroom with bathtub and dish washer. Rent in high season: 550 euros a week.

Like to enjoy this atmospheric familyhouse with a bigger group? Then you could go for the entire house. Sleeps 6-8. Upstairs and downstairs appartment are connected in that case. Rent in high season: 895 a week.

Gigondas, the well-known wine village in the region of the Vaucluse, is of a charming beauty. Winding streets, a little fountain, and the square beneath the plain trees. And the extraordinary setting, with over 300 sunny days a year. The town (600 habitants) is set in the foothills of a vast and stunning area with hills like the Dentelles de Montmirail, a true paradise for walkers. The Mont Ventoux is at 25 minutes by car. A somewhat longer daytrip is possible to Gordes or St. Rémy de Provence - take the route through the Gorges du Verdon, or the Camargue. Closer by are the towns of Avignon, Orange, Arles and Aix-en-Provence, and the medieval villages of Séguret and Les Baroux. You will find weekly markets with lovely local products in Vaison-la-Romaine and Carpentras.
Also for culture lovers there is a lot to see and to do: in summer Orange has its own opera festival in the ancient Roman theatre, the Chorégies d’Orange. Avignon has its international theatre festival in July, and in August in Roque d’Anthéron the greatest piano players give concerts under the starry skies. In Arles there is the famous international photographer’s festival every summer. Except for these large events there are many local festivals throughout the region.

Restaurants, food & wine

The Gigondas is an excellent Cotes-du-Rhone wine. If you are a wine lover, the local wine cellars should not be missed! Don't forget the other Vaucluse wines, like the Vacqueras and the Cairanne, or the famous sweet wine the Muscat de Beaumes de Venise, produced at 5 km in the village with the same name....
In the numerous good restaurants in the region all these wines are being served. Here is something to suit every taste and budget, from the typical Provencal cuisine in a romantic garden (Les Tuileries, Violes) to classy food on a panoramic terrace (les Florets, Gigondas), or Michelin Stars with a Dutch chef (Le Grand Pré, Roaix).

Activities

Practically from your doorstep there are several hiking trails which lead you through the Dentelles de Montmirail. There are also possibilities for mountain/rock climbing (if needed with a local teacher/guide), horseback riding and ATB. Somewhat further there is canoeing on the Ardèche River or the Sorgues River. In Camaret there is a 9 holes golf court. Summer swimming pools are to find in Beaumes de Venise (5 km). Have a relaxing day in the Toulourenc between Entrechaux en Mollans - and finish your day with a plate of sea food (fruits de mer) on the terrace of St Hubert in Entrechaux. Also in Mormoiron there is a swimming lake (plan d'eau) with restaurant.
On the slopes of the Mont Ventoux (less than 20 km from the village) there are the ski stations.
On walking distance from your gite is the tennis court of Gigondas, please go to the Tourist Office for information. And, of course, there is a petanque court in the village.
