The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

We have lived in France for more than 20 years. We have a house in the heart of Provence opposite a lavender field. Visitors often call it a little paradise.
Because visitors never come for a short while, we have made a cosy and comfortable house on our property, where everyone feels at home immediately and appreciates the privacy.

The cottage is completely free and has a beautiful view with its own garden and two shaded terraces.
Inside there is a living room with kitchen, a bedroom and a bathroom with shower and toilet.
It is fully equipped, e.g. with good quality beds, a nice shower, a Nespresso coffee machine, a dishwasher, microwave, air conditioner, Dutch HD television with DVD player and excellent Wifi.
There are walking and car maps, travel guides, nature books, reading books, dictionaries etc for you to make it a nice holiday....
We can make the beds as one big double bed, or as two separate beds of 90 x 200cm.
There is room for a maximum of 2 people.

We live in the Parc Naturel Régional du Luberon and on the edge of a beautiful natural area with ochre colours, where you can hike endlessly in charming or rough areas.

The village of Rustrel has a lovely bakery with a large terrace where you can relax all day and where you can also have lunch.
There is also an épicerie, a tabac/bicycle rental and in the summer there is a small market every week.
It is a 10 minutes drive from Apt, the capital of candied cherries and known for one of the most beautiful markets in France (on Saturday mornings).

Everyone knows the region for its lavender fields that bloom in July, but don't forget the cherry blossom in April, the poppies in May, the summer festivals, the grape harvest in October, the autumn colours in November, the olive harvest in winter and the conviviality all year round.

And: the weather is almost always lovely here!

Wij bezochten in juni 2022 Chez l'Artiste.

Restaurants, food & wine

In the village there are 3 fine restaurants and just outside a pizzeria in a fantastic location, where you can eat on a large outdoor terrace.
We are happy to give you addresses of our favourite restaurants and wines.
On weekdays, almost all restaurants offer delicious 3-course lunch menus for around 15 €, outside on a terrace.
The Luberon is a region with AOC wines to choose from and do we still need to recommend the Provencal cuisine?

Activities

This is an excellent walking area! People come from all over to visit the 'Colorado de Rustrel', a beautiful ochre area where you can walk for hours. And we live very close to it! Many walks are signposted and walking maps are also available. A GR route runs close to our house and everywhere there are signs for hikers, so you can make your own routes, e.g. from one village to another.

We are nature lovers and are happy to tell you about special birds, plants and insects that can be seen in the immediate vicinity. Elske organises bird walks from April to the beginning of July (for more information: www.upupa.fr ).
Liedewy is often at home (because she makes artistic furniture in her workshop) and can also give you good tips at the last moment.

For sporty cyclists there are plenty of challenges nearby (e.g. steep climb of 12 km to Lagarde d'Apt) or a little further away (Mont Ventoux).
A railway track has been converted into a reasonably flat 50 km cycling path for recreational cyclists. In Rustrel, electric bicycles can be rented and in Apt they rent normal bicycles and beautiful racing bikes.

In Villars (5 minutes drive) is a golf course.

Day trips by car to e.g. the top of Mont Ventoux, beautiful cities like Avignon, Aix-en-Provence or the Gorge de Verdon.

Most people go to at least one of the many local Provencal markets and always come back enthusiastic (see guestbook). The one in Apt is on Saturday morning and the one in Isle sur la Sorgues on Sunday morning. In Sault and Lourmarin they are respectively held on Wednesday and Friday mornings.

Rustrel has a municipal swimming pool, about 1 km from our house. It is open in July and August. Other swimming pools can be found in St.Saturnin d'Apt and in Apt.

English language Yoga lessons can easily be arranged for you, privately or in groups.

Rustrel has a Paragliding school and an Acrobranche park.

Possibility to rent horses (10 km away).

We know an artist who gives private painting courses, also for half days.

In summer there are many classical music festivals in the open air with renowned artists. The festival of Avignon (theatre) attracts thousands of people in July.

In winter:
In winter, it is often cold at night (down to -15C), but sunny and pleasant during the day. The dry air makes it not feel cold. We have had picnics at Christmas. There are simple ski areas nearby: on the Mont Ventoux and in la Montagne de Lure (both 1 hour drive). In December there are many cosy Christmas markets.

The truffle market on 28 December in Ménerbes is famous.

Everyone praises the quality of the beds.
We have 'green' electricity, so the electricity you use does not come from French nuclear power stations.

The view is beautiful and the location is completely free (our own house is 50 meters out of sight).

If you still have doubts: read our guestbook, that speaks for itself....!
