The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some traffic

This recently built two-bedroom house is situated along a narrow road that leads up to the nearby lookout the “belvédère". The home has been built all on one level in traditional Provencal architecture. The modern interior has all the necessary conveniences for a comfortable stay. The terrace that leads out from the living room is also built at the same level. The view from the terrace is simply stunning as it overlooks the old town and Roman bridge. The house is located on a gentle slope and has both underfloor heating as well as cooling. This means that the house can be cooled and therefor maintains a comfortable temperature during hot summer days.

The owner's home is situated a little higher up in the garden grounds. You do however have your own separate entrance and driveway with space to park several cars. You also have access to the swimming pool in the garden. You may perhaps spot the owner of the property when he is taking care of his bees or performing maintenance to the garden.

This is a wonderful place just outside a Provencal village, positioned in an oasis of calm, but also within walking distance of the hustle and bustle of the city centre. You can enjoy trips through the hills, visit the medieval villages, the classic French markets, the lavender fields, the vineyards of the Rhone valley and sample the gastronomic excellence of the Provence kitchen. Nyons is most famous for its world famous excellent quality olives and olive oil.

Nyons is a small historic town, complete with several bakers, butchers, newsagents, supermarkets, tourist office, art gallery, pharmacy and cafes / bars all within a five minute walk from the house. Twice a week the village has a large lively market, which attracts visitors people from all over the region. The popular and very attractive city of Vaison-la-Romaine with its famous medieval old town and Roman ruins, restaurants, bars, shops and cafes and its large Provencal market (Tuesday morning) is just 15 km away from Nyons.
Nyons, is famous for its sunny microclimate and olive trees. Located in the Drome Provencale, it is the gateway to Les Baronnies, a rugged area of the Pre-Alpes. It has a lot of charm because of the 14th-century Place des Arcades and the 15th-century medieval bridge over the river Eygues. Explore the small alleys that wind through the old town, many with arched passageways and small courtyards. The valleys around Nyons are sheltered from the Mistral wind and ideal for olive growing. Nyons is located in a region in the north of the Provence, where lavender grows and the city often bathes in its wonderful scent.

Restaurants, food & wine

FOOD
The region is known for the sweet, fruity and fragrant taste of artisan olive oil; the fine black "Tanche" Nyons AOP olives, the rich red Côtes du Rhone wines and Provencal rosé wines. There are plenty of options for exploring the region's food and wines, from shopping at the weekly markets bursting with regional delicacies, to dining in excellent local restaurants. Nyons has a fantastic range of restaurants for all budgets, but also a number of “secret” places to discover of the beaten track. You will find a list of recommendations of local and regional eateries inside the house.

WINE
You cannot pass through the area without noticing that you are finding yourself in a renowned wine-growing region. The fields and slopes are covered with vines, which colour the hills a beautiful bright green in summer to be turned into autumnal hues later in the year. This is a perfect area for lovers of good wine at affordable prices. The southern Rhône is an important wine-producing region and Nyons is at the heart of it all. The world-famous Chateauneuf du Pape is just a 45 minute drive away passing many villages such as Gigondas, Vacqueras, Rasteau, Cairanne and Beaumes de Venise which are even closer. They all have their own winelabels. For example the attractive AOC village of Vinsobres is just 5 km away.
Although the area is better known for its red wines, Grenache grapes, Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan and Cinsault, and warm and spicy wines, there are also great white and rosé wines for a more refreshing summer drink, as well as Beaumes de Venise with its famous “vin doux naturel” made from the Muscat grape. There are many small growers and winemakers, in addition to the more famous ones. The quality is high due to competition and there is an increasing emphasis on organic. People are being welcomed to visit and taste before buying, especially from the cooperative cellars where a range of local wines are displayed. Beware of the high alcohol levels of some wines and the strict limits for drink driving in France. During the summer there are many wine festivals in the surrounding villages just before harvest time. The beginning of September is a special time to visit as you may come across vehicles full of harvested grapes on their way to the local cooperative ready to be made into wine.

The area surrounding Nyons is often included in the Tour de France route and is a very popular cycling area for professional and amateur cyclists. For the serious cyclist, a journey is not complete without climbing the world famous Mont Ventoux, situated just 20 km from the house. There are two main cycle routes up the mountain from Bedoin or Malaucene. In the area around Nyons there are many cycling routes, suitable for both road bike as well as mountain bike. The cycling routes cover all levels and you’ll find numerous marked cycling routes through the nearby vineyards and villages. There are a number of bicycle rental shops in Vaison la Romaine and Nyons.
HIKING
There are numerous walks of all levels, both directly from the house as well as further afield, through the vineyards, local villages, among wildflowers, over hills, mountain passes including spectacular views. The house is situated in the hills of Nyons and the hills of the Parc Naturel Régional des Baronnies Provençales. From the slopes around Mont Ventoux there are both ambitious GR (Grande Randonnée) walking routes and shorter circular walks through the forests which offer spectacular views. The beautiful Dentelles de Montmirail are a series of steep mountains that stretch over more than 7 km with rows of vineyards on the terraced land below.
