The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

In a previous life, this newly renovated cottage served the residents of Frolois their daily baguettes and croissants as the Boulangerie of the village. Today the property offers up to date, comfortable accommodation in a pretty village setting.
The house sleeps 4 adults in 2 bedrooms. A spacious king size double bedroom (bed dimension 160cm x 200cm) and a twin bedroom (2 beds of 90cm x 200cm) with new mattresses, ensure you sleep well during your stay. The beds have been made up with fresh white linens for your arrival, yet the rooms have an individual feel and relish in the uninterrupted views across the roof tops of Frolois to the countryside beyond. Cool, contemporary colour schemes have been chosen in the bedrooms to enable relaxation and restfulness. Generously sized picture windows enable peaceful contemplation or reading opportunities from an unspoiled position. There is enough storage for your personal belongings and both bedrooms are equipped with ventilation fans for the summer months and hairdryers for your use.

Each bedroom leads to an en-suite shower room, with over-sized showers, complimentary soap and lotions for your use. Small and large towels are provided.

The downstairs of the property offers the holiday maker satisfying living spaces in which to relax and prepare meals. You can enjoy lengthy dining with friends and family at the comfort of the dining table and chairs. Descend a few steps into the old fashioned, walk-in pantry cupboard where you can store your food goods enabling an uncluttered, easy to work in, fully equipped kitchen. A pretty Juliette balcony at one end of the kitchen opens onto the garden terrace for an airy feel allowing a breeze through the house. A small corridor with a practical downstairs w.c. leads to a warm, sunny lounge with inviting soft seating for all the occupants, UK free to air, English television channels and a cosy log burning stove for cooler evenings ensure you have everything you need to relax after a busy day visiting the region. Glass doors open onto a veranda with a few steps down to the enclosed, south facing garden, which also enjoys the wonderful views of the village and valley beyond.

The garden area invites you outside to enjoy the long summer days from the comfort of a sun lounger for more opportunities to enjoy the surroundings. Keen chefs can barbecue from the gas grill, just a few steps from the kitchen, keeping food preparation and garden dining easy and stress free for your holiday.

We can also recommend wonderful local producers of cheese, meat and provide private catering to enhance you Burgundy Hideaways experience in Frolois. Please inquire for details

For our younger guests we can provide a cot in either of the bedrooms, a high chair, stair gate, changing mat, toys, books, DVDs. There is a microwave to make baby food preparation easy, plastic plates and cups along with child-sized cutlery. A baby bath can be easily positioned in either of the shower rooms.

Please inquire about your pets joining you for your visit to La Guinbarde. Usually this is not a problem, but we do ask that animals stay off the soft furnishings and light coloured bedding.

The owners offer a catering service to take away some of the 'self' from self-catering. This may be arranged in advance of your stay or once you are at the house. We can also offer bespoke children's menus along with child sized portions from the choices available. Please inquire for more details.

There is daily bread available that can be delivered to you for your daily requirement of French baguettes and pastries.

A great place with all the facilities for a family with kids. Located in a soothing natural environment, highly recommended for a relaxing holiday. Sharon and family are great hosts, who are available to help and guide with all the things you might need during the stay.

    Comment from Sharon Megret

Restaurants, food & wine

There are too many in the wider area for me to list on here, so I shall just list the ones within a 15 minute drive from the property that I have experienced. Unfortunately, there are no restaurants in Frolois or Corpoyer les Moins where the houses are located (See Meal delivery service for eating at home choices) but there are some close by.
Restaurant de l’Abbaye in Flavigny sur Ouzerain Traditional French cuisine with menus and a la carte.
La Grange in Flavigny sur Ouzerain. Canteen style restaurant with food made by local famers wives. Seating outside in summer, warm log fire in winter. An authentic Burgundian experience!
L’Esprit in Venarey les Laumes. . French cuisine with a modern twist with both menus and a la carte. Opposite the railway station. Terrace available.
La Trianon d’Alesia in Venarey les Laumes. Pizza menu and traditional menus and a la carte.
Pizz 'Alise in Gissey 5 minutes from Frolois/Corpoyer. Pizzas and burgers for eat-in and take-away. They do have indoor and outdoor seating to drink aperitifs while you are waiting, or to eat your food when cooked (Beer garden style). Take your own beer & wine, or buy from them.
Baigneux les Juifs has a visiting pizza van on Wednesdays
New for 2020 (not open at time of writing) in Darcey just 5 minutes away a new restaurant is due to open with an outside terrace.

Before your arrival, you will be sent a list of the dishes and platters available to order for home delivery. Just let me know before (ideally more than 24 hrs notice, but not always necessary) what you would like and I shall deliver this hot and ready to eat, or if this isn’t suitable, cold and ready for you to warm up. Please do ask if there is a dish you might like to try as we are adventurous enough to have a go! We also offer sharing platters or dishes left in the property for your arrival (in the fridge ready for re-warming) so please contact me directly about this.

Activities

La Guimbarde offers the perfect base for exploring the area. Not far are some wonderful, world famous places to visit.
Starting with the historic city of Dijon, just a 45 minutes drive away. A visit to Burgundy would not be complete without a visit to its capital. Naturally, there is an abundance of fabulous restaurants, wine bars and shops to sample along with the historic Owls trail to follow. Check in at the local tourist office for all the information.
The town of Beaune and its neighbouring vinyards, just over an hours drive away, is credited with producing some of the best red and white wines in the world. This world known town is well worth a visit during your time in Burgundy. The Hotel-Dieu, dating back to 1443, built by Nicolas Rolin as a hospital for the poor, is one of the finest examples of 15th century French architecture, is also a must see. The old town is lined with many restaurants, cafes and beautiful shops to explore.
Within 15 minutes drive of The properties are some beautiful towns. Flavigny-sur-Ozerain. A hill top beauty, and a medieval walled village which was the backdrop for the film 'Chocolat' starring Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche. In addition to it's Hollywood fame, call in at the Anis de Flavigny sweet shop. Here you can buy Les bonbons d'anis, hand made in the local factory. The Roman ruins at Alesia and its new visitor centre are worth a detour if archeology and Roman history interest you. The Château of Bussy-Rabutin, developed from a 12th century chateau and rebuilt in the 14th century in the rennaisance style is close by, along with the picturesque medieval cobbled streets of Semur-en-Auxois. Not to be missed is the Abbaye at Fontenay founded by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux in 1118, and built in the Romanesque style. It is one of the oldest and most complete Cistercian abbeys in Europe, and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. Chateauneuf-en-Auxois is a hilltop beauty keeping watch across the hills of the Auxois country side. A medieval gem, with some lovely lunch venues. The area is rich with heritage and no matter where your interests lie there will be something for you. In addition, you could stumble upon any number of local festivities, such as summer fêtes, nocturnal summer markets, village 'vide-greniers, musical soirees, etc depending on when you visit.
