The house
The quiet and freely located spacious holiday home (150m2) is an old farmhouse with modern and comprehensive comfort, and is completely available for you. Carefully refurbished and available for rent since 1 July 2023, comfortable in any season. The grounds (1500 m2) are fenced and thus safe for children and pets. The old beams (poutres), the authentic barn (grange), the vaulted cellar (cave) and the atmospheric Godin wood-burning stove give you the feeling of history. The kitchen with all amenities (including dishwasher, combi-oven/magnetron, fridge with freezer drawers), the separate toilet, the bathroom with sink and walk-in shower, central heating in all (bed)rooms, TV, internet and wifi, and a washing machine and dryer in the scullery give you the comforts of home. The house has a cosy sitting room (with smart TV for Netflix, YouTube, etc., among others, and an audio installation) with spacious corner sofa and several armchairs, a dining area with old wooden round dining table and a separate stylish garden room with round table and book/game cupboard. Also on the ground floor is a spacious double bedroom with electrically adjustable slatted beds. From all rooms on the ground floor there are beautiful views of the garden and rolling countryside. On the upper floor you will find a spacious landing with sitting area and two double bedrooms, both with beautiful views. All bedrooms are equipped with very good mattresses and beds, and of course plenty of cupboard space for your belongings. Upstairs is also a spacious 'playroom' with table tennis and various indoor games. If necessary, 2 simple guest beds can be added in this room. A cot and baby chair are available. All rooms have tilt-and-turn windows and shutters on the outside. The interior is warm, spacious, comfortable and cosy. There is firewood near the wood-burning stove. In the shed you will find more firewood, as well as the barbecue and cushions for the various seats in the garden. In the shed, you can also place your bicycles if necessary. The garden - with grass, various fruit trees, (fruit) bushes, a small vegetable garden and flowering plants and flowers - is equipped with various seating areas, a picnic table and dining table, hammocks, fire basket and separate loungers/beds for in the sun or in the shade under the trees or the parasol. From the garden, there are lovely views of the rolling countryside, nearby woods and meadows with sheep and grazing cows.

The house is located on the edge of the hamlet of Archon on the border of the Aisne department (Picardy region, Hauts-de-France region) and the French Ardennes. This protected nature reserve is called 'the Thiérache', a varied rolling landscape of meadows, fields, hedges, forests, streams and small hamlets. The area is very quiet, spacious and green with beautiful views. The area is very sparsely populated. From the garden, where you can relax in the sun or in the shade of the trees, you can enjoy the silence and the beautiful views over the rolling countryside. In the evening, you can enjoy the beautiful sunsets and the impressive starry sky. In short, a wonderful place to unwind. From the house you can go hiking and cycling, you will regularly see deer, birds of prey and squirrels. 3 km from Archon is the small town of Rozoy-sur-Serre, with two bakeries, a small and large supermarket and a restaurant. You will also find electric charging stations on the square opposite the town hall, which you can use for a fee. One of the most beautiful villages in France, Parfondeval, is also 3 km away. The walk there is beautiful. In Pardondeval there is a restaurant/café with a terrace. In our house we have a folder for you with further information on the area.

We hebben een geweldige week gehad in het huis van Wieneke, mooie plek aan de rand van het dorp, heerlijk gewandeld en zelfs van de sneeuw kunnen genieten. Het is een compleet huis, zeker ook in de koude week dat wij er waren. Het huis is zeer goed te verwarmen middels CV maar nog veel fijner met de houtkachel. Echt een aanrader, we komen zeker terug in dit fijne huis.

Wat een feest. Waar je op hoopt maar dan net iets beter.
Het enige doel was weg van het vuurwerk en een rustige omgeving voor onze bange hond, maar we kregen zoveel meer. Overcompleet, opgetuigde kerstboom, superwifi (jaaaa we komen voor de rust maar is gewoon handig toch?) een heerlijke bank en super leesstoelen bij de haard. Communicatie verliep zeer snel en zeer behulpzaam. Heerlijk dat de tuin volledig omheind is, onze hond voelde zich welkom en meteen thuis. Slaapkamer beneden ook fijn. Het huis is groot maar voelt knus door de verschillende ruimtes. Wandeltochten in de omgeving vragen om kaplaarzen want het is gewoon blubberig en nat, maar met de juiste kleding heb je daar geen last van. We willen zeker terugkomen in de zomer, omgeving nu al práchtig, benieuwd hoe dat in de zomer is.

Leuk huis met een mooie omheinde tuin in een prachtige omgeving op een prettige afstand vanuit Nederland. Bij aankomst een hartelijke ontvangst en uitleg door Wieneke en Eric. Wij hebben elke dag 1 tot 2 wandelingen vanuit huis en in de omgeving gemaakt. Ondanks de mindere weersvoorspellingen hebben wij elke dag genoten van felle opklaringen. Volgende keer gaan de fietsen zeker mee, want er zijn hele leuke en afwisselende routes te maken. Pluspunten zijn de tuin voor de honden, een goed bed zodat je elke dag uitgerust opstaat en een goede douche om de dag fris te beginnen. Het huis heeft CV en een houtkachel en is ook erg comfortabel bij koud weer. Wij komen zeker terug!
Restaurants, food & wine
There are several restaurants in the area (see among others the folder in our house). The Champagne region is nearby, with Reims as a beautiful city where, apart from many good wines, one can especially visit the champagne houses and cellars, or start a tour for a round through the famous Champagne region (e.g. Epernay).
Activities
From the house, you can make beautiful walking and cycling trips through the rolling countryside. Trips by car or motorbike on the quiet roads are of course also possible, including the fortified churches route (églises fortifiées). Nearby are beautiful hamlets, a little further are slightly larger towns (Vervins, Hirson). The region and towns are rich in history. There are also fishing lakes in the area. For the sporty visitor, there are also mountain bike routes nearby. There are several restaurants in the area, e.g. in Aubenton (Table de Maya), Parfondeval (Le Relais de la Chouette) and in Vervins/Burelles, see also the map available in our house. In Chaourse (approx 10 km) there is an outdoor swimming pool. In Hirson (about 25 km) is a swimming pool (indoor and outdoor pool, sauna and bowling alley). On the river L'Oise (near Autreppes, approx. 30 km) you can go kayaking and canoeing. In Signy Le Petit there is a swimming lake with a small beach, and in the French Ardennes there is also a beautiful lake with water sports facilities (45 km away, Lac des Vieilles Forges). The nearest golf course is in St Quentin, in Reims and Laon there are also beautiful golf courses. Larger towns at some distance (up to 50 km) are Charleville-Mézières, Sedan, Rethel, Laon, St Quentin and Reims, all beautiful historic towns, with a variety of shops/shops, weekly markets and restaurants/terraces. In the region (e.g. Aubenton, approx. 14 km), various courses are also regularly organised: painting courses, yoga, sculpture, pottery etc. You need to sign up for these in advance (if you would like further information, feel free to call us). Horse riding is possible at several places near Archon. Reims, with its famous cathedral and champagne houses and restaurants in various price ranges, can be reached by car within 45 minutes, Paris is about 2 hours away. Included is: Internet/wifi, bed, bath and kitchen linen, wood for the wood stove, water, and gas for cooking.
The house is heated with the wood-burning stove, as additional heating the central heating (CV) can be used. During the heating season (October - March), a reasonable contribution to the heating costs will be discussed with you.
Electricity will be charged after your stay (0.30€/kWh), for 2 to 3 persons with normal use this is approx. 15€ per week, in the dark winter period approx. 25€ per week.
The rental price as shown is based on 2 persons, for each additional person 25€/person per (total) stay is charged.
Dogs are charged 25€ per (total) stay (price is for max 2 dogs together).
