The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

A very comfortable and spacious gîte for 2 people in a rural setting just 12 minutes from a lovely beach on the Atlantic Ocean.
We, Rik and Karin, have realised this gîte in a typical 'grange vendéen', a barn from the early 1800s, built with thick walls of natural stone. The plan is to transform this historic property into a residential house and several luxury gîtes. The swimming pool (yet to be built) will be the icing on the cake.

For now, 1 gîte is finished and we are happy to offer it for this summer. The gîte is built where possible with natural materials including hemp lime plaster and consists of 1 room, containing a sleeping area, a lounge with open kitchen and a separate bathroom. The double bed is 180x200, but on request we can also prepare two single beds of 90x200.

Outside, you have a private terrace and an adjacent courtyard garden where both shade and sun can be sought all day. Our garden used to be a meadow for horses and has been planted with a variety of trees and shrubs since the last 3 years. The vastness and tranquillity emanating from the garden invites you to wander and stay in it. Our intention is to create a leafy park here in the coming years with vegetable gardens, a mini food forest, a bowling alley and several terraces. The pool garden, located in the middle, will be a so-called 'jardin secret'.

Restaurants, food & wine

The Vendée is known for its delicious oysters, mussels and 'mogettes', a small white bean. Furthermore, very fine wines are made here.

Activities

As soon as you come to the Vendée, you see how nice it is here. With its dykes, polders, dunes and sandy beaches, it even looks a bit like the Netherlands, but with a microclimate and, with only 600,000 inhabitants on some 6 700 km2, a sea of space, healthy space!
The Vendée is a day's drive from the Netherlands. Just below the city of Nantes, where the Loire River flows into the Atlantic Ocean, begins the 250 km long coast with sandy beaches, 1800 km of cycle paths, surf spots, two special islands, fashionable seaside resorts and fishing ports.
The Vendée also has a beautiful hinterland, with endless green countryside, forests, lakes and castles. The natural park le Marais Poitevin, also called the 'Green Venice', can be found in the south of the Vendée. Here you can row through green waterways. To the north is le Marais Breton nature park, a marshland area where beavers, otters, birds of prey and eels have the kingdom all to themselves.
The two islands are just off the coast. Ile de Noirmoutier is the more mundane island, with its white beach huts on la Plage des Dames, pretty houses and oyster farms. You can even go here by car when low tide comes and a narrow access road dries up. In the 18th century, there were already Dutch on the Ile de Noirmoutier to help the islanders build polders and dykes. The Ile d'Yeu can only be reached by boat and is a lot more rugged. You can enjoy cycling along the cliffs, through grassy landscapes and dunes. In the little bays you can then go swimming, sunbathing or sit on a terrace. What a life!
There is a lot to do and see in the Vendée, something for everyone. We can give you excellent advice on that. In addition, the local 'Office de tourisme' has lots of targeted information and maps/leaflets to take with you.

Further remarks

Villa Rikato is a 15-minute drive from the coast. A very nice beach, which is the closest, is the beach of Saint Vincent sur Jard. Here you can picnic under the pine trees overlooking the sea and the entire coastline. Furthermore, there are different types of, more crowded as well as more quiet (sandy) beaches all along the coast.

For shopping, the Super U in Neuil le Dolent (7 km) is the closest. Here you will find everything you could possibly need. This village also has the nearest hot bakery. Some 19 km from here, towards les Sables d'Olonne, is a large shopping centre containing the 'Leclerc', a really big 'French' supermarket.
In our village of Poiroux there is a café with outdoor terrace (walking, cycling distance). Here there is also a small grocery corner set up and every morning the hot baker comes by to drop off baguettes and some croissants for the daily 'dépôt de pain'.

We offer 2 bicycles to use (see photo in photo gallery) . There are also 2 mountain bikes for enthusiasts. We also have a bike carrier for those who have a tow bar on the car. In the Vendée, 1840 km of cycle tracks have been constructed in recent years.
