The hamlet of Chez Marot belongs to the town Mareuil-sur-Belle, which lies about 2,5 km away. Maureil ( aprox. 1200 inhabitants ) has a castle , château de Talleyrand, which was part of the defense line against the English in the Hundred years' war in the 14th century. It is still inhabited by the duke of Montebello, and can be visited under guidance of the duchesse.
About 2 km south of Mareuil lies the hamlet Saint Pardoux de Mareuil, grouped around a beautiful 12th century Roman church, which has free entrance during the day.
Mareuil lies in the departement Dordogne, in the Périgord Vert region. The Périgord ( the origianl name of the current departement Dordogne) is not just known for it many historical towns such as Périgueux - of which it got its name-, Brantôme , Aubeterre and picturesque towns such as Javerlhac, but also for its caves dating from the stone ages, medieval and Renaissance castles in Bourdeilles and the beautiful rolling hills, in which fields and meadows are altenated with woodland and stream and river valleys. It is also known for its local specialties such as Foie Gras and truffles.
The area is ideal for day trips to towns, caves and castles, for walks in the immediate vicinity of La Lezardie or along marked routes, for a trip by velo rail or wandering on the limestone plateau of Argentine, where more than 20 different orchid species grow in large numbers. The Dronne river is suitable for canoeing. In short, too many activities to do in just one day. The predominantly beautiful sunny weather from April to October contributes to a pleasant stay in the Perigord Vert.
