The house

  • Quiet, built-up area

Our luxury holiday home, Ti ker kozh, in Saint-Nic is so wonderful that we would like to share it with you. The friendly 1933 house is 15 min on foot from the Atlantic coast, parking at the beach is free.
Thoroughly renovated, the house is surprisingly spacious inside (140m2) and equipped with all modern comforts.
GROUND FLOOR : A beautiful, very complete living kitchen is at your disposal (see photos). Outside is a storage room with washing machine, an extra toilet and a garage for storing bikes and surf gear. Two parking spaces next to the house and behind a gate. A beautiful wooden sun terrace with plenty of garden furniture (see photos).
In the garage you have a spacious 4-person therapeutic ir sauna with light and aromatherapy. You can listen to your own music there via a Bluetooth installation powerful enough to also echo on the terrace.
Infrared relaxes muscles after a walk and opens up the lungs, unlike a classic sauna where moisture can hamper your breathing. More info on request.
Access to the house is suitable for pram or wheelchair. The lounge is equipped with a 49inch smart TV with satellite connection Astra 1 and Astra 2 via satellite dish. You can enjoy Dutch and Flemish TV channels via TV-Vlaanderen. You can also bring your subscriptions (Netflix etc,,,) which can be watched directly on the smart TV, or you can cast from a smartphone.
Comfortable leather seats provide complete relaxation. A PC corner with WIFI and a reading corner with quite a few books and board games are also available....
SLEEPING COMFORT : The first floor has two bedrooms for two persons each, two bathrooms and therefore 2 toilets: the first bathroom with rain shower, toilet and washbasin, and the second bathroom with double bath, two washbasins and toilet...
The second floor consists of a spacious children's room with 1 double and 1 single bed + separate toilet and washbasin, Behind a double sliding door is a large bedroom with XXL bed of 2.20x1.80. That room is equipped with wide-screen TV and a live hub with an old film collection that can no longer be streamed, masses of DVDs of all genres and you can also play games without wifi, just bring your own console. Available for two guests as well as a whole family.
A bed of that size is impossible to get in France, we had to import it from the Netherlands. We don't charge extra for this, it's pure service because we think sleeping well is important. There is also a toilet and washbasin on this floor.
This makes it ideal for families, from grandparents to grandchildren, for a multi-generational holiday. But also couples without children and friendly couples, can have a wonderful stay here. Our own bakery is three houses further around the corner. However, partying youngsters are refused.
As we Northerners are a bit taller (longer) than the average Frenchman, this also translates into the equipment of our house. Kitchen sink, sinks, toilets, all just that little bit higher. Firm beds 1.60x2.00m and 1.80x2.20m with quality mattresses, solid sofas, things that make life comfortable for taller or longer people. There is a toilet on each floor, each toilet has a different height so that both young and old can find the iedeal throne.
Brittany has only three seasons, spring summer and autumn. Spring starts earlier than ours, and summer lasts longer. Our winter is their autumn, consequently it never freezes. Many trees keep their leaves. In October, there is even an été Indien there and the waves of the Atlantic Ocean are high enough to enjoy surfing until Easter! It rains there from November to the end of February. Then we are also closed. But from March/April you have nice spring weather. In any season it is better there than in the North. From April onwards, the campsites fill up.
La Palue beach is very well known in surfing circles and a beautiful stretch of nature where the GR34 passes.
In September, weather conditions are exactly the same as in August, but prices halve because that's when the French stop partying. The nature and patrimony remain the same as in August, there are no school-age tourists then.

The Google earth map below is 10 years old, so the house is as it appears on the photo carousel, not on the map!
St Nic is a very small village, your sleep is undisturbed. No market early in the morning on your doorstep, no tourists crowding your village. Just the ringing of church bells in the distance and the call of an occasional owl, no more than that. It is the surrounding villages that get plenty of visits from tourists at the evening Fest Noz (local folk festivals with pancakes). The only tourist attraction in our village is the beautiful church of St Nicaise. On the beach in high season, you will find a cosy beach bar serving fine cocktails, waffles pancakes, ice creams and even hot meals with fries. In the evening, the youth also gather there and there is often an orchestra. If you want more animation, head to beautiful Quimper (Saturday market) with shops and boutiques in the traffic-free old town. Concarneau's walled city centre is a must, as is historic Locronan. A village that is classified and holds the title of most beautiful village in France. It owes its international fame partly to Roman Polanski, who shot his film "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" there. For a view of this, search Youtube for the combination Locronan Roman Polanski. Wikipedia also provides more explanation.
Closer to home is the always cosy Morgat, which attracts a lot of crowds with its "les mardis de Morgat" the Tuesdays of Morgat.

Restaurants, food & wine

Of course, you can buy wine from all over France here, but their speciality is Cider. Sparkling deep yellow with an alcohol percentage hovering around a lager. Louis de Funes' favourite breakfast, by the way, is croissants with Cider. Pancakes both savoury (blé noir or galettes) and sweet (froment), all kinds of biscuits, Kouign-amann, not to mention Fruits de mer. Fresh shellfish are widely available here. Oysters (creuses) in calibres 0 to 5 straight from the sea (never from farms). You buy at the daily market in Crozon straight from the Fisherman. You can also get fresh fish in Plomodiern (5km) where the Intermarché is, Intermarché has its own fishing boats. Also in Plomodiern, on Friday (market day) at the beginning of the market, you can visit a fisherman who sells from his house, the catch of the night. Sunday is rest day also for fishermen, so no offer on Monday.
Brittany is very high-class in culinary terms, restaurants are everywhere and Plomodiern even has a 2-star restaurant.

Activities

Everything to do with water and nature can be found in St Nic. Pentrez plage (our family beach) is known for kitesurfing (check out "Kiting Pentrez" on Youtube). Plank sailing, wave surfing, kite surfing, windsurfing, skim boarding, paddle surfing, kayaking, all can be practised here on the peninsula. And of all these, you can take a local course. The wave action of the Atlantic Ocean is very strong from October to Easter, and the Crozon peninsula always has a beach that has the right wave action. The beach at La Palue and Pentrez is particularly popular with surfers. You can also take a sailing cart course (char a voile) at Lestrevet, the beach adjacent to our family beach. Pentrez-plage (our family beach) has a very famous surf school for young and old, école de surf Pentrez. Ideal for children in the autumn holidays.
Everything with boats and boating is there. Also visit the numerous nearby islands by pleasure boat if you want to take it a bit easier, island hopping is called. The pays du Ménez hom is an exquisite walking and hiking paradise. Many cyclists climb the Ménez Hom (330 metres 4% slope) on tarmac. We have two bicycles available. Our family beach is equipped with a lifeguard station and surveillance in the summer months. Climbers can go anywhere because nature here is really still rough and unspoilt. The Parc naturel régional d'Armorique starts at the end of our street and extends deep into the sea D'Iroise. Geocaching is a very popular activity in this region, you will be amazed at how many treasures (cache) you can find here. Numerous marked walks can be found in our info corner.

Further remarks

Outside space : The enclosed terrace without view, of 68m2 is child and dog safe. We installed a 40m2 wooden sun terrace there, the rest is gravel. There is also a modern outdoor toilet (see photos). Garden furniture and sun loungers are in the shed or garage. We also have two city bikes and a BBQ set at your disposal. In the locked garage you can safely store bikes and kayaks. There are also 2 parking spaces next to the house on the driveway, behind the gate.
We also have a "shed" an outdoor area where the burner, heating oil supply and washing machine are located. In the photos, this is the cottage with the fireplace and the two stone benches. NO fossil fuels in the house. We do electric cooking (induction and hot air oven).
Board games and books for all ages, a series of Agatha Christie is also available.
Saint-Nic, a small town of less than 800 inhabitants, is located in the department of Brittany, South Finistère. The rugged nature of the "Pays du Ménez Hom Atlantique" invites ecotourism. There are enormous sports possibilities and not only in and on the Atlantic Ocean!
Our holiday home used to be the town hall and is perfectly located for the ideal mix of nature and culture. Saint-Nic is surrounded by picturesque villages with rich culture of a historical nature (villes d'art et d'histoire) and you will still find many traces of the Celts (menhirs). There are numerous attractions nearby: the great naval port of Brest, interesting museums, the great amusement park Océanopolis, Pointe du Raz, Pointe de Penhir...

Why Saint Nic?
We chose this region because it is never too hot or too cold here. The beach is there especially for the little ones, bike rides, surfing and brisk walks for their parents, sightseeing and festive outings, tasty restaurants for grandparents and great-grandparents. Wifi and TV-Vlaanderen with all international channels and all Dutch-language channels from both Flanders and the Netherlands, and you don't easily find that in France.
The region offers something for every age. So close to the coastline there is a lot of sunshine, more than the region suggests. The house is big, when we bought it it was pointed out to us that we had a responsibility towards the population because it was their old town hall. Many of them still have memories of the wedding hall, which has now become two bedrooms.

We renovated the house along the inside and adapted it to all the modern needs of our children and grandchildren. The locals are very friendly and make every effort to understand you if you are not fluent in French. Most of them speak a little English. Everything is available here, especially convenient is the hot bakery behind the corner. All the surrounding villages also have a hot bakery with very tasty croissants and delicious bread, also the intermarché in the next village, all this adds to the comfort.
There is no overcrowding of tourism here, even in high season you can easily find a parking space at the beach. In spring and autumn you usually see well-equipped hikers, cyclists and surfers here, In the summer months people with children.

The healthy air was also one of the points that made us decide to have a holiday home here. Nowhere in Europe is there so much natural iodine in the air for everything that breathes, grazes, grows, and is consumed here. Breathing alone is a health cure in itself. Deep into the sea D'Iroise extends the nature reserve. No industrial-scale fishing is allowed. Boats you see are only pleasure boats. The sea is blue and clear, when paddling the young fish swim between your toes. If you swim a little deeper, large schools of fish swim with you.

What makes this holiday home so unique? Bright and airy bedrooms with high ceilings and tall windows, new comfortable and large beds. Lovely spring-filled leather lounge to sink into in front of your Smart TV, after a day of hiking. Well-equipped kitchen. Traphal in wood, looks like the inside of a ship. For rentals in low season, you have heating on mazout with fonten (cast-iron) radiators that give you instant comfort. No need to light a fire yourself, turning a knob is enough.
The beautiful GR34 and GR37 pass by our beach. For a description and photos of this unique hiking trail, consult (google) Piet Smulders' website, click on France, then on Brittany: Presqu`île de Crozon (GR 34) Piet is a sporty Dutchman who makes beautiful photos and descriptions of his hikes.

No smoking, pets welcome after consultation and without extra charge, the ground floor is suitable for wheelchair users, the bedrooms are upstairs (stairs without stairlift)
