The house

  • Quiet, rural area

Gite L'Ecurie was once a cow barn, but is now a comfortable cottage, suitable for 2 to maximum 10 people (excluding babies). The house has a large living room with beamed ceiling and a wood stove. There is a television with UK Freesat channels, French TV and a DVD player. Free WiFi is provided in the gite and in the vicinity of the swimming pool. The living room opens on to the shadey terrace which has wonderful views over the countryside. The open plan kitchen is fully equipped with a cooker/oven, microwave, refrigerator, freezer, washing machine and dishwasher. There is a separate dining room and games room containing a pool/snooker table.

The 3 spacious bedrooms can accommodate 10 people. Bedroom 1 has a double bed (can be configured as a twin room on request), and bedrooms 2 and 3 each have a double bed plus an adult bunk bed. The large dining room can also accommodate 2 fold-away beds on request and with a supplement; travel cots and high chairs are also available on request. There are three bathrooms, each with a shower, washbasin and toilet (en suite to bedrooms 2 and 3. The private bathroom for room 1 has a bath with shower).

The gite has a private terrace and garden, with garden furniture and barbecue, overlooking the valley and the village of Bardenac.

L'Ecurie is part of a small family-friendly domain "Chez Sarrazin ' comprising 2 holiday homes and a tiny 6-pitch campsite which is located some distance from the gites.

For shared use there is a 12 x 6m swimming pool with comfortable loungers; beyond is a playground with swings, table tennis and a field where one can play football, volleyball or badminton.

The south of the Charente, bordering the Dordogne, will charm you with its lovely nature. Here you can go "back in time" and enjoy the quality of life as the locals have done for generations in their peaceful farming communities. The quiet, traffic-free lanes are ideal for exploring the rolling, unspoilt scenery, historic villages and towns, the lakes and the authentic local character (markets, good restaurants, cognac distilleries ....) either by car or by bike.
Chez Sarrazin is the ideal basis to explore the many attractions of the Charente and Dordogne.
From Chez Sarrazin a small road up the hill leads to the village Brossac, with its old stone houses set around the 12th century church. Here you will find all kinds of facilities, including a restaurant, tennis and boules courts, bakeries, a grocery store, a pharmacy and a butcher, and of course the tourist office near the town hall.
The pretty town of Chalais, dominated by a 16th century castle, is located 10 minutes drive away and has many shops and a supermarket, as well as a colorful market on Monday. One of the highlights of the summer is the international show-jumping competition and during the year several concerts and exhibitions in the castle and its gardens take place.
More interesting towns are Aubeterre sur Dronne, a monumental town where you can find several historical monuments but also a shopping street with nice boutiques and some supermarkets. Royan, at the Atlantic coast with the famous zoo in La Palmyre. Bordeaux, a historic and cosmopolitan city. St. Emilion and Cognac, known for their famous wine and cognac. The Dordogne / Perigord with its capital Périgueux and of course Bergerac. Riberac and its famous weekly market. Poitiers, the Futuroscope and the Vallée des singes, the monkey park. And last but not least: Angoulême, the walled capital of the Charente, with shopping boulevards and historic buildings, but also the comic book museum and the many mural drawings are worth a visit. In January, the international comics festival is held here and in September one can enjoy the famous "Tour des Remparts": a weekend with antique car races.

Restaurants, food & wine

Charente is known for its Cognac and Pineau. The vineyards of the "Petite Champagne", "Fins Bois" and "Bons Bois" can be found around Barbezieux, Blanzac, Baignes and Brossac. In the South of Charente Cognac and fruity Pineau is produced, a blend of brandy and grape juice.
Other local products are melons, raspberries, (goat) cheese, walnuts, hazelnuts and walnut oil. The mild, sunny climate guarantees abundant crops of fruits and vegetables. Magret de canard, duck confit, duck pâté, rillettes and foie gras, and the Chalais veal are the specialties of the region.

Activities

For hiking and mountain biking enthusiasts, the paths are marked so it is easy to explore the beautiful surroundings by bike or on foot. You can also borrow our hiking maps. Fishing and swimming is possible at the "Etang Vallier", 2 km. distance from Chez Sarrazin. There is also a fine sandy beach. For small children there is a dedicated safe swimming area, supervised during the summer months. Horse riding is also a possibility. There is also a restaurant.
Other possibilities for nature swimming are found in Aubeterre (the river), St. Aulaye (the river with water slide) and Le Paradou near Parcoul (a lake with water slide). Indoor pools are found in Jonzac (with a beach!) and Angoulême.
Also visit one of the castles (many Romanesque) churches, museums or art studios, and the mills and farms where they sell local produce, still traditionally manufactured.
The area has various parks and gardens that can be visited.
