The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

This is a little stone house with three floors, and three rooms, one on each floor. There are two terraces for sitting out and watching the abundant wildlife and beautiful countryside. Expect peace and quiet, although most facilities are 10 mins drive away. Bird watching enthusiasts have loved it.

This house is a secluded rural hideaway. It is comfortable and cosy with all basic services, including wifi.

The front door gives onto the kitchen/diner which has a dining table, gas cooker/stove, and a well-equipped kitchen (plenty of knives, saucepans etc). Downstairs in the bathroom is a shower and washing machine. Upstairs in the bedroom is a comfortable double bed. There are beautiful exposed rafters overhead and stunning views over the rolling countryside from windows on three sides. The little road outside gets maybe one car per hour. There is a large field/garden outside you can park in and children can play in. There is also a swing and a trampoline. On clear nights expect amazing starry skies.

There is a wooden deck terrace, which gets a lot of sun, and also a tiled patio outside the bottom floor. I provide loungers and deckchairs, parasol, outdoor chairs and a large wooden outdoor dining table.

This is a solid stone building with rough-rendered inside walls, terracotta tiles, exposed beams, and chestnut flooring. It is authentically rural in style. The lower terrace is completely secluded from view. The upper terrace is visible from the lane and, although not exactly overlooked, could be viewed from the farmhouse opposite - so you might not want to sunbathe naked on the upper level. However, to all intents and purposes it is private. Note that the farmhouse may have guests but they generally stay on the far side and so are not very noticeable.

Getting around

You really need a car though some have managed without - you can hire bicycles in Villereal and Monpazier. Bergerac airport is 30 minutes away and there is cheap hire car there. Agen is on the TGV line from Paris, and an hour's drive away. You can drive from the channel ports in a day - about 7'30" drive from Caen.

Other things to note

Note that the stairs are steep and probably not suitable for people with mobility problems. They also creak (but are safe). You will be in rural France so expect to see wildlife moving around, and sometimes hear it at night. There are mosquito nets provided.

It's best for a couple although I have stayed there with a 3 year old sleeping on the bedroom floor and even two teenagers on air beds (not provided). There is a stairgate available for toddlers but it would need to be reinstalled if required. I have also pitched a tent outside but would not want more than four people using the property. Feel free to discuss options.

This cottage is on the borders of the Dorgogne department, although it is actually in Lot et Garonne. The Dordogne river itself is within easy reach.

This is a landscape of gently rolling hills, woodland and small family farms.

The nearest village is 10 minutes walk away and there is a camp site with a bar and swimming pool which you can use. From the house you can walk to and around the lake and enjoy the wild flowers and clouds of butterflies. Villereal is 10 minutes drive with shops, supermarkets and weekend farmers' markets. Also a short drive away are the beautiful medieval bastide towns of Monpazier and Monflanquin. The small medieval town of Issigeac on the road to Bergerac is delightful. Castillones has a cinema and big outdoor swimming pool. The Dordogne river is not far away where you can swim, hire canoes, and sunbathe on the banks. There is a nice swimming lake with a sandy beach about 15 mins drive away. The famous caves with their prehistoric paintings are also accessible. Several impressive chateaux also.

The Pigeonnerie is a small but charming place in the middle of nature. The views from the windows are overwhelming (you can see the sunrise from your bed!). It is well equipped and on hot days the facility of a swimming pool in the neighborhood is a pré.
