The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

LA PETITE BESSOU ( LPB) is a traditional stone cottage with accommodation for up to six guests. It is detached and very private, with its own EXCLUSIVE swimming pool. A very tranquil location, with wonderful views over the rolling countryside. There is a separate entrance and parking area, which guarantees privacy. It is available all year round.
On the ground floor there is a Lounge/Dining Room with 'brossage' style stone walls and oak beams. There is a stone hearth with a log burning stove for cosy off-season use.
The corner kitchen is incorporated into the lounge and is very well equipped with hob, full size cooker, microwave, dishwasher and fridge. There are French doors leading onto the south facing patio and a large window in the kitchen area making the lounge very light and airy.
Also on the ground floor is the main bedroom and an en suite shower room and WC. The second shower room with WC is circular in shape and is a delightful conversion of the old prune oven.
The first floor has been modernised for a comfortable stay but retains a traditional feel with the original low oak beams. Here you will find another two bedrooms, one with a queen size double bed and one with an IKEA 'Hemnes' pull-out bed which easily converts from a single bed to a full king size double bed. All equipment can be provided for babies or toddlers including a high chair, cot, cot linen etc.
The south-facing French doors in the lounge lead to the very private patio and the swimming pool. It is well furnished with sun-beds, tables and chairs and there is a gas barbecue provided. There is a lovely southerly view from the patio across the valley beyond. The swimming pool is 11 m x 5 m and there are roman steps offering safe access into the water. The first 4m of the pool is 1m in depth allowing safe bathing for toddlers and non-swimmers. Children can be easily supervised from the patio. The pool is kept in pristine condition and there is a thermal pool cover which keeps the pool at a lovely temperature during the summer. Guests have EXCLUSIVE use of the swimming pool.

This is what we call paradise. So much privacy, so calm and everything you need and even more.

While we were there, it was quite warm the first few days, with even temperatures arround 40 degrees. But the gite stayed cool inside because of the characteristic thick walls.

Because of the wonderful weather, we were allmost non-stop outside. Either in the area where there are so many lovely villages and markets to visit. Or we were at La Petite Bessou for a swim, a tanning session on the sunbeds, a game of badminton or cooking.

We had so much fun with cooking. We went to the local markets for the best sun riped organic tomatoes, eggplants, garlic and zucchini. We prepared every evening another lovely dish with them on the bbq.

Of course we also made use of the house itself. The kitchen has everything you need including dishwasher, microwave, oven and toaster. The bathrooms are beautiful with their wonderfully spacious showers. And in the bedrooms comfortable beds.

The owners put so much thought, work and passion into this place. They are wonderful hosts.

We will be back soon :)!

What a nice place to stay. Downstairs very cool when hot outside.
Pool is much bigger than the picture shows and the hosts foresee some games for the children in the garden.
Location of the house is between 2 villages with a lot of events during the summer.
Hosts are very helpful polite and flexible. They prepared everything very kidsproof for us and they foresee qualitative baby tools (chair, bed...)

Small detail: WiFi connection was not that good. Not a problem for us but if people need to work during holiday a Teams call will be difficult.

Comment from Alan and Suzanne Davenport

Thanks so much for the lovely review - much appreciated!

Just a quick comment re. internet; we realise that the 20-40 Mb/s that you will mostly get in La Petite Bessou is not quite up to the speed that we're used to in more built-up areas and cities but it is the best and most reliable available in local rural areas right now.
Fingers crossed that the telecoms companies deliver on the promised fibre optic connection in 2023!
UPDATE 2023! Fibre optic has been installed!

Once again another fantastic stay at LPB. My wife and I have been returning to LPB at least once a year and on a few occasions twice since 2007 and somehow each visit surpasses the previous ones.
Suzanne and Alan are fabulous hosts who leave you to just enjoy their brilliant property but are always on hand should you require anyting no matter how trivial you make think it is.
Back for 8 weeks starting the last Saturday of May 2021 and we can not wait.

Restaurants, food & wine

There is a wide selection of restaurants both within the towns and local countryside. They range from local 3 course 'menu du jour' from often as little as 13 euros to star rated restaurants at 50 euros. There are also excellent restaurants with very appetising food for children. Local specialities include garlic soup, foie gras, hazel-nuts, walnuts, confit and breast of duck. Information and contact details can be found in the 'information booklet' in LPB.
We are located in the midst of many famous wine growing areas including St Emillion, Duras, Bergerac, Buzet, Monbazillac...spoilt for choice.

Activities

Relaxation !
Many of our guests choose just to relax in the gardens and the pool, they say that the charm of this location is the silence. At night there are no town lights to disturb, you can just lie back and gaze at the stars.
Sporting Activities
Rambling and Cycling; the gentle rolling countryside and near empty country lanes, paths, and bridleways offer ideal rambling and cycling conditions. We can arrange for the local bike shop to deliver rental bikes to La Petite Bessou. There are walking groups at both Villereal and Monflanquin and tourists are very welcome to join with the walkers.
Water Sports; You can canoe, then enjoy a swim in the Lot or Dordogne rivers and have a picnic on the riverbanks. There is also excellent swimming, with a man made sand beach at Lougratte lake (10 mins drive). Pedaloes and canoes are available for hire. There are two water fun parks, one near Agen and the other at Bergerac.
Tennis; our guests can use the tennis court in the village close by
Golf; there are 9 and 18 hole golf courses within easy access and clubs can be hired.
Fishing; permitted in many of the rivers. (a licence must be obtained locally).
Other local activities; e.g. Outward Bound Park, horse-riding, bird-watching.
Events
There are vide greniers, brocantes,, wine events and local markets, one for every day of the week, where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruit and meat, straight from the local farmers.
Throughout the year, but particularly during the summer months, you will discover many local festivities, mostly involving food and drink and flowers. Such as night markets with food and music. medieval festivals, special music concerts and wine events.
Places to see
The area is steeped in history and we are close to numerous fortified villages ('bastides') incuding Villereal, Monflanquin, Monpazier, Sarlat, Pujols, and Belves. Many Chateaux to visit including Biron, Bonaguil, Beynac, Milandes and the Abbey’s of St Avit Senieur and Cadouin,
Breath-taking views will be discovered at Beynac, Domme, Tremolat and Limeuil . The region is famous for caves such as Lascaux and Les Eysses and the caves of Pech-Merle and the well known Rocamadour make an interesting day trip.
