Domaine Le Cazal has over 40 hectares of land and is just outside the pretty ariegeois village of Manses. It has uninterrupted views over the rolling Lauragais hills to the breathtaking Pyrenees. Despite its tranquil surroundings, the medieval bastide town of Mirepoix is only a 10 minute drive. Mirepoix is a thriving town and offers all amenities including supermarkets, fuel stations, banks, bars and restaurants. A good road network is only a few minutes drive away giving easy access to the surrounding area. The towns of Foix and Carcassonne are well worth a visit as well as the pink city of Toulouse. If Cathar castles are of interest, there are plenty to visit in this area. The Mediterranean coast can be reached in just 90 minutes.

Restaurants, food & wine

In the lively town of Mirepoix you will find a vast choice of restaurants and pavement cafés perfect to while away the time people watching with a glass or two of local wine. Sit under the couverts and admire the original beams and carved faces. The Monday morning market should not be missed. From spring through to late autumn Mirepoix hosts a series of festivals, fêtes and exhibitions. There are plenty of local wines on offer, from a bold red, dry white, cool rose or the famous blanquette or cremant of Limoux.

Activities

There is something for everyone here, ranging from lounging by the 12m x 6m pool enjoying the amazing views and birdsong to skydiving or canyoning and everything in between.
Starting at Le Cazal, if you would like a break from the pool, there are plenty of leisurely and not so leisurely walks. Take a walk up to the village of Manses, around 600m. There are circular walks, starting from your front door, which are part trail, part woodland, part quiet road ranging from 2.5km to about 10km. There is also a pretty 10km walk to Mirepoix. The only slightly strenuous part is through the woodland to climb over the hill to our east. Otherwise it is more or less flat and offroad, other than a few hundred metres.
If walking/hiking appeals, this is the perfect spot for you. The GR78 – route de Saint Jacques de Compostella, passes behind Le Cazal. Further afield, there is a fantastic range of walks. You can choose difficulty level, distance, river walks, mountain walks, historic walks, town walks.
This is also an ideal cycling area – either mountain biking or road biking. The Tour de France often passes by within 5 or so miles. The Pyrenees are closeby with their challenging cols or if you prefer a more leisurely ride, the voie verte is a walking and cycle path converted from the old railway line and runs from Mirepoix to Lavelanet, with plenty of pretty villages en route.
There are rivers and lakes nearby offering canoeing, kayaking, rafting, sailing, swimming, other various water sports and canyoning. The thermal spa at Ax les Thermes offers a relaxing restorative visit.
Nearby, there is a good choice of other activities, including golf, karting, skydiving, skiing, visiting caves and underground river, Cathar castles and of course the many markets where local and speciality produce can be found.
The area is steeped in history with Mirepoix, Carcassonne, Foix and Toulouse of particular interest.
