The Chateau de Gros is an early 18th century farmhouse built in the typical local "chartreuse" style. It has about 6 ha of own land, mainly pasture, forest and orchards. The forest (3 ha) is freely accessible for tenants. Gros belongs to the municipality of St Nazaire de Valentane, a small village (280 inhabitants) with a strong agricultural character. The village itself offers few facilities, but in the immediate vicinity are picturesque "bastides" such as Lauzerte, Castelsagrat and Bourg de Visa, which offer everything the holidaymaker needs. The nearest town is Moissac ( 17 km); the golf courses of Sauveterre are 20 km away.
Gros is situated in the hilly part of the Quercy, the area between the Dordogne and the Gers, which is however much less touristic than both these regions. Fruit growing and wine making are the main activities, and to a large extent determine the charming landscape, which also has much to offer in the early and late season. The local tourist offices have set up various walking and cycling routes that allow the visitor to enjoy this natural beauty to the full. This natural beauty also extends to the fauna: the region is densely populated with red deer, and numerous bird species unknown in the Netherlands can be found there. For motorists, thematic routes have been set out, such as "la route des bastides".
There is also much to see culturally. Gros lies along one of the routes used for pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela, and in the immediate vicinity are therefore numerous church buildings, castles and museums to visit (such as the famous abbey and cloister of Moissac). The region is also dotted with old fortified towns ("bastides"), many of which have a protected status. Daytrips can also be made to important cultural centres such as Bordeaux, Toulouse ( the "pink" city), or the medieval towns of Cahors and Carcassonne. In the smaller towns, many antique markets ("brocantes") are held in the summer, attracting visitors from far and wide.

Restaurants, food & wine

The South-West of France is famous for its cuisine. Central to it are all kinds of poultry ( duck in particular), truffles, chestnuts, wild mushrooms, and all the fruits and fruit specialities the region produces ( Chasselas grapes, figs, plums - " pruneaux d'Agen" peaches, etc.). The quality of wines, previously not too highly regarded, has risen sharply. Now there are numerous regional wines that are inexpensively priced but of excellent quality. Many visitors therefore tour the various wine castles in the area ( almost exclusively red wine). In terms of spirits, Armagnac should be mentioned, often a by-product of the wine chateaux.
As almost everywhere in France, you will find numerous small restaurants in the region (but not in St Nazaire itself) where you can enjoy excellent local meals for little money. Those who want to go upmarket can go to nearby Puymirol where an excellent Michelin-starred luxury restaurant awaits. Reservations are recommended.

Activities

Key words for Gros are "peace" and "space", - but with modern comfort and a wonderful view. At the same time, the immediate surroundings offer so much in the way of natural beauty and places of interest that one can fill weeks with day trips.
Moissac, situated on the Tarn and the famous "Canal du Midi" offers many possibilities for water sports (canoeing, water skiing, rowing; there is a swimming pool). There are also facilities for anglers and even skydivers. For young visitors, the small nature park "Naturoland" is meant.
