The house

Le Four à Chaux is a large but intimate Provençal country house, built in stone and carefully restored. It has great character with old staircases, terracotta tiled floors, wooden beamed ceilings and family furnishings giving a welcoming and friendly feel.

The house is set within peaceful countryside, surrounded by vineyards, an adjoining property and a handful of neighbouring homes. It will therefore suit those seeking a quiet location in which to relax.

The beautiful, landscaped gardens offer far-reaching views to the front and rear of the property. Open and covered terraces offer different options for outdoor dining and relaxing. There is always a peaceful spot to be found in shade or sun.

The large back garden overlooks the Côtes-du-Rhône valley and the ancient villages of Sablet, Séguret and Rasteau. The garden opens directly onto our private vineyard and is the perfect spot for enjoying the spectacular sunsets. A dining terrace with traditional Provençal furniture leads on to a lawn laid to grass and a separate paved patio. In summer the long stone dining table is pleasantly shaded by a vine-covered canopy.

The walled south-facing front garden has a large lawn surrounded by established borders. Around the gated swimming pool (11 x 5.5 m) are a summer kitchen with dining table and barbecue, a terrace with sun loungers and a separate seating area with wooden benches. The pool is unheated, but enjoys summer sunshine from morning until early evening. There is also a long stone dining table shaded by a mature bay tree, a separate breakfast terrace and numerous areas for relaxing. A special feature of the front garden is that it is sheltered from the Mistral wind.

On the ground floor of the house, the main entrance hall leads into a large living room with plenty of comfortable seating, a raised dining area with a circular table suitable for eight and a traditional fireplace. There is a small separate television room with an adjacent downstairs cloakroom (shower, wc, wash basin).

Although the house is not air-conditioned, the thick stone walls and wooden shutters are naturally cooling and provide protection from summer heat and direct sunlight. A full central heating system keeps the house warm in cooler seasons.

A hallway leads to the cosy kitchen with a classic range cooker, marble work surfaces, two fridges, a wooden table for informal dining and a raised open fireplace. Next to the kitchen is a utility room with freezer, washing machine and dryer.. There is also a sink and stainless steel worktop. A door from the kitchen leads up five stone steps, past a small herb border, onto the south-facing dining terrace and gardens.

Three separate staircases lead to the upper floors, where there are four main bedrooms, each with its own bathroom or shower room. These staircases mean that the bedrooms are well-spaced and offer plenty of privacy. The house is ideal for three or four couples or for a family with children.

The first floor master bedroom opens onto the rear garden terrace through a set of double French doors; its ensuite bathroom has an antique, freestanding bath and a separate walk-in shower. All three bedrooms on the first floor have direct access to the terrace, gardens and vineyards.

Stairs from the main landing lead up to the second floor master suite which comprises a master bedroom, an ensuite bathroom with freestanding bath and walk-in shower. There is an additional dressing room/child's bedroom, which shares the ensuite bathroom.

There is a café in the centre of the village with a traditional lunch menu. Next door is a popular takeaway pizzeria. There are numerous other restaurants a short drive away.
Le Four à Chaux is located in the Vaucluse in northern Provence, a wine producing region rich in history and with plenty of sunshine. Within a short distance you will find the picturesque villages of Gigondas, Vacqueras, Rasteau, Cairanne, Villedieu and many more.
Mont Ventoux, the famous landmark of the Tour de France, is nearby and offers splendid views over the region and beyond.

What a gem of a proportie at the perfect location in the Vaucluse, a short walk from the lovely village of Sablet.
We enjoyed each and every aspect of it: its comfort, the beautiful and well kept gardens, the views, the pool area, the lovely bed-and bathrooms, the traditional looking kitchen which is secretly the dream of any good cook. No reason not to go and spend some time here. A wonderful experience.

We visited Le Four à Chaux with our extended family of five adults and three kids - and everyone loved it.
The kids loved the pool and the lawn for their many different playing activities. The adults loved the atmosphere, the well equipped and charming kitchen and the many differenten places around the house - where we always found the perfect spot regarding daytime, sun exposure and intensity of wind.
The location was exactly what we were looking for. Close to several nice villages, where we could get fresh croissants in the morning or go out for dinner without the need to take a car - we took our bikes along. Other sights or bigger towns are within good reach by car.
Rebecca gave us a warm welcome and was always available for our questions and needs during our stay.
We can highly recommend a stay at Le Four à Chaux and would definitely love to come back another time.
Thanks to Mark and Carina to share such a beautiful place.

We had a lovely stay at the beautiful house of Marc & carina. We stayed there with two families and our children. The location of the house is very calm and ideal for a summer getaway. We loved how much space and privacy there was and how many 'secret' corners we found to enjoy ourselves (breakfast near the house, apero next to the vineyard and a fine barbecue dinner at the pool). We would most definitely recommend this place to all of you 'joie de vivres'. Perfect village to enjoy some wine tastings (we recommend chateau Coholla), cosy village and friendly people. Price vs. Quality was PERFECT!

Restaurants, food & wine

Wine lovers will find domaines and caveaux in abundance where one can taste and buy excellent wines direct from the winemakers. The well-known crus of Gigondas, Vacqueras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Rasteau and Cairanne are all produced close by.
There is a wide choice of restaurants, bars and cafés in Gigondas, Séguret, Vaison-la-Romaine and the surrounding area. We are happy to suggest some personal favourites.
In the spring and summer, there are excellent road-side cabanes, selling seasonal produce such as asparagus, melon, peaches and strawberries.

Activities

There are markets to visit throughout the week, including Vaison-la-Romaine on Tuesday morning, Nyons on Thursday morning and Carpentras on Friday morning. In summer, there is a Thursday evening market with food stalls in Séguret, where one can eat at open air tables.
Very often there are brocantes and vide-greniers to explore in the local villages, while the famous marché aux puces is held every Sunday morning in Carpentras. For antique lovers, the atmospheric town of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, with its canals and water wheels, is well worth a visit.
For walkers and runners, there are extensive walking and hiking trails in the area. Some of these can be accessed on foot directly from the house, including very peaceful, marked paths in the pine and oak forests towards Séguret and Crestet.
For cycling enthusiasts, Mont Ventoux and the base villages of Malaucène and Bédoin are within easy reach.
There are tennis courts open to the public on the outskirts of Sablet and golf courses in Orange and Avignon.
There is also a water park at Monteux.
