The house

As a former farmhouse, the holiday home still has many authentic features, such as beamed ceilings, wooden floors and wooden partitions. The house is cosy and attractively furnished, while retaining its authentic details. On the ground floor is the living room with the kitchen behind it. The toilet and shower room can be accessed from the kitchen. Upstairs there are 3 bedrooms, where 5 people can sleep. Of course, the house is fully and completely furnished. We think everything you need is there. And if you do miss anything, you can reach us quickly, as our house is next to the holiday home.
The living room is furnished with a spacious dining table with 6 chairs and a cosy seating area by the wood-burning stove. In the kitchen a 4-burner gas stove, hot water from our own boiler, 2-door fridge with large freezer compartment, microwave, coffee machine (with filters), Senseo, kettle, cooking and kitchen utensils, cutlery, plates, cups, mugs, glasses, etc., etc., etc. In short, everything is there!
There is also a high chair and a cot available.
The 3 bedrooms:
-Big bedroom, equipped with a double bed (160 x 200), a single bed (90 x 190) and a cot. Furthermore, a large 3-door wardrobe.
-Smaller bedroom with two single beds (80 x 190), which can also form a 160 x 190 double bed together. Further cupboard in this room.
-Smaller bedroom with single bed (90 x 200) with the possibility of an extra bed on request.
All beds are geared towards Dutch sleeping comfort, with good mattresses and new duvets and pillows. We also provide all bed linen, there is no need to bring anything with you.
Sunroom and terrace
A so-called sun room (kind of conservatory) has been built onto the house. A room with many windows that can easily be unhooked, creating a covered space with open walls. If it is too hot in the sun during the day, or if there is a rain shower, this is a great place to relax. But also in the evening to enjoy the silence, the view or the clear starry sky.
The living room is equipped with a large table and chairs, so you can eat there as well.
There is also a terrace on the south side of the house with beautiful unobstructed views over the valley of the Doux and the higher mountains of the Ardèche. A lovely place to have breakfast in the morning sun, for example! On this terrace a garden bench and a picnic bench. There are also 6 folding lounge chairs.

Location
Peace, space and nature! Those are the main characteristics of the location of La Grand'Font in the northern part of the Ardèche. An area without industry, without motorways and even without trains. This part is therefore much quieter and much less touristic than the south of the Ardèche. There is still plenty of unspoilt nature, the mountains are higher and the valleys deeper. Hear the woodpeckers knocking during the day and owls calling at night. Healthy air and the sound of silence! In short, an ideal area for rest seekers, nature lovers, hikers and cycling enthusiasts.
La Grand'Font is situated at 2,5 km from the village Lafarre. It is located on a dead end road at the edge of a forest, overlooking the valley of the river Doux, with behind it the view of the higher mountains of the Ardèche. The house is situated at an altitude of approximately 690 m above sea level. A pleasant height, which usually makes for a cool night. And because of the low humidity it doesn't feel too warm during the day or night.
Our own house is next to the holiday home, separate from each other. This guarantees privacy for the holiday guests. But should there be any problem, we can be reached quickly. Perhaps a pleasant thought, since there are few people living in the immediate vicinity.

Wat hebben we genoten van onze vakantie in La Grand’Font! “Frankrijkgangers” zullen deze unieke plek, vanwege natuur, rust en stilte ongetwijfeld weten te waarderen.
Wij hebben in juni 2023 drie topweken gekend in een schitterende omgeving. De Ardèche is hier ongerept. Het landschap is er ruig met zijn mooie doorkijkjes, de kabbelende riviertjes met kronkelende zijstroompjes en zicht op hogere bergen van Ardèche en Alpen.
Willy en Wim hebben het vakantiehuis met veel smaak en behoud van authentieke elementen ingericht. Het is een heel fijn, sfeervol en comfortabel vakantiehuis met een prima uitgeruste keuken.
Wij hebben fijn gebruik kunnen maken van de aan het vakantiehuis gebouwde zonnekamer. Bij wat minder weer en ook ’s avonds een prima plek om te lezen!
De tuin is sfeervol. Het uitzicht van hieruit over het dal is ronduit fenomenaal.Rondom het huis zijn verschillende zitjes gecreëerd. Zo hebben wij vaak, genietend van de ochtendzon, ontbeten op de bank voor het huis. Dagelijks hebben we met veel plezier gebruik gemaakt van de picknicktafel. ’s Avonds was het goed toeven op de tuinbank met zicht op het dal van de Doux
Zoals elk jaar hebben we ook weer veel (elektrisch) kunnen fietsen. De omgeving leent er zich prima voor: kleine bochtige rustige weggetjes met mooie vergezichten. Vanzelfsprekend moet hier wel geklommen en gedaald worden. Veelal fietsten we vanuit La Grand’Font, soms wat verder weg. (“La Dolce Via” is een prachtige route, die langs de rivier de Eyrieux leidt.)
Wie van wandelen houdt, kan z’n hart ophalen. Zo heb ik erg genoten van de wandelingen met Wim in de nabijheid van het vakantiehuis.Erg bedankt Willy en Wim voor de hartelijke ontvangst, fijne gesprekken, hulp en assistentie, die jullie graag verleenden als we daar behoefte aan hadden. Fijn ook dat jullie ons daarnaast alle vrijheid boden om ongestoord te kunnen genieten van huis en tuin. Mede dankzij jullie gastvrijheid en hartelijkheid hebben wij van een onvergetelijke zomervakantie kunnen genieten!!

Het huis was sfeervol en authentiek maar ingericht met moderne attributen. Heerlijk ruim voor z'n tweeën. De zgn zonnekamer met veel ramen was van toegevoegde waarde voor warmte op koelere avonden. We werden met zelfgemaakte appeltaart ontvangen! Perfect dat Wim en Willy ernaast wonen voor contact en vragen of adviezen maar wij voelden ons helemaal vrij. De door Wim uitgestippelde wandelingen in de buurt waren goed te volgen en erg mooi, nog afwisselender dan de wandelingen van de VVV. Prachtig uitzicht tot in de verte en een weldadige rust maakten onze weken perfect. Een aanrader, vooral voor natuurliefhebbers. Op een half uurtje rijden een gezellige en goed gesorteerde markt in Lamastre (dinsdag).

Wat n prachtige plek in de noord ardeche: rust, natuur, fenomenaal uitzicht, authentiek huis, en zeer hartelijke eigenaren. Echt n plek om terug te komen, er zijn nog zoveel mooie wandelingen te maken!
Restaurants, food & wine
La Grand'Font is located in the middle of nature, where you can relax and unwind. The shopping facilities are therefore a little further away than you might be used to at home. The nearest shops are in Lalouvesc, about a fifteen minute drive away. Lalouvesc breathes the atmosphere of a mountain village. You look here into the large Rhone valley and in clear weather you can see behind you very clearly the Alps with famous peaks such as Mont Blanc, Matterhorn and Parc des Ecrin. In Lalouvesc there is a small supermarket, a bakery (with terrace), post office, pharmacy and a good butcher. Of course there are also several restaurants to be found here.
Another option is Saint Agrève, a small town in the other direction. You will first drive through Saint Jeure, a village with a fine restaurant, and then you will reach Saint Agrève in a total of 20 minutes by car from La Grand'Font. In Saint Agrève you will find everything you need. It is a pleasant and active little town with several restaurants, two supermarkets, two bakers, two butchers, two building material shops, post office, petrol station, a thrift shop and several churches, both protestant and catholic. Of course, there is also a large weekly market; every Monday morning.
Slightly larger, but also a little further away, is the town of Lamastre, with a clear regional function. All facilities as mentioned for Saint Agrève are also present here, including a hospital. Lamastre is situated on the river Doux and has a nice centre with shops and restaurants. And every Tuesday morning the largest market in the area is held here, which is highly recommended. In addition, on Saturday mornings there is a small (organic) market with regional products.
Activities
La Grand'Font is located in the middle of nature, in the middle of the mountainous landscape of the Northern Ardèche and with a beautiful view of the valley of the river Doux. It is usually very quiet here, you only hear nature. Maybe as Dutchmen we are not used to that anymore, but here it still exists!
Because of this location you can immediately start walking or mountain biking from the house. There are plenty of unpaved roads and paths, which in turn connect to marked trails. Above the house is a small road, from where you can go in three directions for beautiful cycling through the mountainous area. Of course, this means steep climbing and descending. But you can also choose an easy cycling tour along the river Doux, which is a short distance from our house. Or over the cycle route of the year 2020, La Dolce Via, a former railway track, from Lamastre or Saint Agrève, with a connection to the well-known Via Rhône.
For cyclists, there is the route of the Ardechoise. An annual cycling spectacle, internationally known. And because the route is fully marked, you can follow it all year round and choose from different loops.
La Grand'Font is also an ideal starting point for motorbike tours. From La Grand'Font, you can tour the Ardèche in three directions. You have to like curves, because there are few straight roads! The marked cycling route of the Ardechoise is also beautiful to drive with the motorbike.
From the house there is a path to the river Doux with possibilities to 'paddle' in the flowing water. For children it is wonderful to play in the shallow water. At a short distance there are several swimming possibilities in the Doux with a beautiful sunbathing area and a toilet building.
Much more water can be found in the Lac de Devesset, just north of the town of Saint Agrève, about 20 minutes' drive from La Grand'Font. This is a large water sports lake with lovely swimming water, a sandy beach, picnic areas and play and climbing facilities. There are also pedal boats (with slide), surfboards/subs and sailing boats for hire.
About 10 minutes away, along the Doux, there is a large trout pond where you can fish for trout yourself. Rods and bait are provided and you only pay for what you catch.
Historical town Desaignes with narrow streets and a castle, a famous basilica in Lalouvesc and nice weekly markets in Lamastre and Saint Agrève. With the steam train or 'rail bikes' from Lamastre. Climbing the highest mountains of the Ardèche, the Mézenc (1753 m) and the Gerbier de Jonc (1551 m).

Points of interest
The holiday home is attractively and cosily furnished. It is a 150-year-old house, which has been kept as authentic as possible. Of course, there are 'modern' adaptations to make it cosy and comfortable. They have also installed excellent beds with new duvets, aimed at Dutch sleeping comfort.
By French standards, the house is certainly not isolated, but for people who like urban or busy tourist areas, this is not the right place to holiday. It is usually very quiet here, you only hear the sounds of nature. La Grand'Font is therefore mainly aimed at nature lovers and those seeking peace and quiet. From the holiday home, you walk straight into nature! But for that delicious French croissant (and other groceries) you will really have to drive.
Our house is not connected to the municipal water supply, we have our own well with delicious water, without chlorine or other chemical additives. The water is of excellent quality and is periodically inspected to be sure it is safe to drink.
The arrival and departure times are in principle 11.00 am and 4.00 pm. Other times in consultation. The same applies to arrival and departure days; in principle from Saturday to Saturday, but to avoid the busy motorway route in high season, another arrival and departure day can of course be chosen in consultation. Let us know, everything is negotiable.

The rental prices are all-in, including final cleaning and electricity costs. We do ask (unfortunately) €5,- per washing machine use. In addition, we are obliged to collect tourist tax at € 0.80 per person per day, or € 5.60 per person per week (from 18 years of age).
Furthermore, we expect from every user that the house is left behind neatly, such as floors swept or vacuumed and the dishes clean in the cupboard.
In colder periods, such as early spring or late autumn, we provide sufficient wood to keep warm.
