The house
Get to know this pearl where cosiness prevails in a picturesque setting. The house is a completely restored and converted stable complex with landscaped garden in terraces. The other house and stables on the property are private and not used.
"Le Poulailler" or "the Chicken Coop" has an exclusive character because of the old stones and the original nesting place of the chickens used to be. In the cave/living room, you can still find the authentic nests with "partitions" made of slate.
You enter in a spacious entrance hall where in the open cupboard you can find a wealth of information about the region including fun walking routes, cycling paths, historical information, latest news,... You can also find a booklet with our personal favourites and recommendations regarding food, drinks, walks,... There is also enough room to store all your shoes and coats.
Once inside, your attention is automatically drawn to the original old vault that you can reach from the ground floor down a few steps. You enter a space that immediately exudes peace and cosiness. Curl up on the comfortable sofa with lounge under a fleece blanket to watch TV. Or would the children rather stretch out on the floor to play a game? We have provided a soft XL carpet for that. Tip, turn on the spotlights that beautifully illuminate the vaulted ceiling at night. You really feel like you are in a cocoon. The living area also integrates the dining area and kitchen. The kitchen is modern and fully equipped: fridge, dishwasher, hob, quality pots/pans, Dolce Gusto, blender, plenty of crockery, glasses, cutlery, various kitchen utensils, spices.
A spacious bathroom with bathtub, walk-in shower, double washbasin, toilet, towel radiator, washing machine, washing rack, iron, ironing board, buckets and hoover can also be found on the ground floor.
There is a second toilet and a washbasin upstairs.
There are two luxurious bedrooms where you can dream away in our modern box springs under lovely blankets with real down. The master bedroom has a double box-spring bed, night table with lamp. The second room has two separate box-spring beds (80 x 200cm) that you can also slide together, bedside table, night lamp. Both rooms have spacious wardrobes and electric heating. On the landing under the sloping roof is an extra multi-purpose room where you can put the luggage, children can play puzzles,.... The upper floor can be securely closed with a children's gate.
The house is well insulated, making it pleasant to stay in both winter and summer.
In fine weather, you can use our icing on the cake, a spacious summer kitchen that offers you a lovely living space with work shelf, sink, hob and a dining table with chairs in addition to shade. Ideal for outdoor cooking, playing games,...
There are various herbs in the garden that you can pick for preparing your meals such as thyme, lavender, laurel,.... In autumn, you can pick quinces to make jam. In fine weather, you can hang up your washing on the washing lines outside.
You can swim in the river Alagnon, which offers many beaches, and in Blesle you can paddle in the Voireuze which runs through the town.
As we have our own water treatment plant, we ask you to use the biodegradable detergents, washing and dishwashing products, shampoo and shower gel provided.
We are currently upgrading the holiday home. Bookings will be possible again from spring 2024.

The house stands with four other houses on a dead-end road and is a 5-minute drive from Blesle, one of the towns listed as one of the 100 most beautiful towns in France, with good reason! Large-scale tourism is unknown here, allowing the town to be viewed in all its glory and tranquillity.
Some of many other towns/cities worth visiting include: Brioude, Issoire, Léotoing, Lavaudieu, Auzon. And a little further afield: Salers, Puy-en-Velay, Clermont-Ferrand, Montpeyroux, La Chaise Dieu, Billom.
Do you like to enjoy the beautiful countryside? After all, Blesle is adjacent to the 'Parc Naturel Regional des Volcans d'Auvergne', which has been nominated for inclusion on UNESCO's World Heritage List. It is the largest natural park in France and is located in the Massif Central. It is an ancient volcanic mountain area with peaks up to almost 1900m high. It consists of 4 large volcanic massifs, Monts Dômes (Chaîne des Puys), Monts Dore, Cézalier and Mont du Cantal. In the latter lies Blesle. The peaks of Cantal offer breathtaking views over the central massif and its surroundings (sometimes there are views as far as the Alps or the Pyrenees!).
Auvergne is called the "château d'eau de la France" in France. It is a source area of several major rivers such as the Dordogne and the Loire. The landscape is dotted with lakes, waterfalls and deep gorges. The beautiful green valleys are home to many small villages. The valleys are wooded, while the peaks and ridges, on the other hand, are rocky or covered in flowery grassland. Nearby lakes are often formed by flooded volcanic craters, natural reservoirs formed by lava or engineered reservoirs such as the Barrage de Grandval.
This green quiet environment is obviously an ideal habitat for many animals such as deer and roe deer, wild boar, foxes, hares, reptiles like vipers and lizards, and striking birds like the golden oriole, kingfisher, heron and of course birds of prey like the buzzard, sparrow hawk, kite,...
All these animals can also be admired in a 4X4 safari in la Reserve Sauvage de Trailus.
More exotic animals can be seen at Ardes Zoo, a very special zoo, where fewer species and a natural and spacious habitat have been chosen.
The beach at Bageasse offers cooling off on warmer days. Lac Chambon has water cushions and paddle boards you can indulge in.

Wij zijn hier geweest met 2 personen en onze hond eind juni 2023.We hebben het ontzettend fijn gehad in jullie gite. Alles is er aanwezig, top ingericht( ook onze smaak) en een heerlijke buitenkeuken.

Een heerlijk verblijf met vrienden en familie in jullie fantastische huis dat voor enkele dagen ons warme thuis was waardoor we Oud&Nieuw op de mooiste en meest feestelijke wijze hebben kunnen vieren. Hartelijk dat dat je dat voor ons het mogelijk gemaakt!
We hebben elke dag buiten geluncht en ‘s nachts de sterrenhemel bewonderd.

Een sfeervolle, mooie en comfortable gîte met rondom het huis verschillende zitjes in de royale tuin. Wat een rust en ruimte. Een hele mooie omgeving om te wandelen. Ook hebben we verschillende dorpjes/stadjes in de omgeving bezocht, o.a. Lavaudieu, Léotaing en Brioude heeft een mooi museum.

Restaurants, food & wine
Every Saturday morning (also in winter) there is a lively market in Brioude. Most stalls are manned by the producers themselves, especially with cheese, vegetables, honey, sausages. In Blesle, there is a farmers' market every Friday evening in July, August and September (from 17.00 to 20.00). Compose your dinner there on the spot and enjoy freshly baked bread, quiches, cheeses, ...
In Massiac and Lempdes-sur-Alagnon there is a market on Tuesday mornings.
In Blesle, you can find delicious bread, two grocers and some local shops. There are a few bars and restaurants. Our recommendations can be found in the information in the gîte.
For cheese lovers, it is good to know that the Auvergne has 5 cheeses with their own label. Four of them are produced near Blesle: Bleu d'Auvergne, Cantal, Salers and St Nectaire. A cheese route has been created to take you past the producers. At a number of farmers you can get a free guided tour and, of course, taste and buy the cheese. At the various markets, you will always find a cheese farmer selling his own cheese.
Activities
For cyclists, both on and off road, and walkers, the Blesle area is a paradise.
For walkers, there are many mapped routes and, using the maps in the gîte, you can also determine your own route. You can choose from fairly easy routes to the better climbs. For mountain bikers and cyclists, the possibilities are truly endless. Short, long, in the valley, through the hills or to the high cols. There are also maps in the cottage with marked routes for cyclists. Because Auvergne is very sparsely populated and not overrun by tourists, you can enjoy the overwhelming silence and the impressive landscape.
In winter, an hour's drive away, you can ski in Lioran or Super Besse. Both are small-scale, (child)friendly ski resorts with very reasonable prices. Half an hour away is a cross-country skiing area where there is also a lot of hiking on snow rackets.
In Dienne, an hour's drive away, there are paragliding courses.
In Allanche, you can take a trip on an old railway line with a so-called velorail. It is a beautiful ride, where, apart from a few railway crossings, you will not encounter other traffic. You cycle by yourself on a railway bike for four adults or two adults and three children.
With a fishing licence from the municipality, you can fish in the fish-rich rivers, where you will mainly encounter salmon.
Do you like water sports? In summer, spring and autumn, definitely sink down to Super Besse for various water sports activities, inflatables on the water, canoeing,...

Further remarks
In mid-August, there is a street theatre/music festival in the Blesle. Well attended and very enjoyable.
At the end of August, the Festival de la Rue is held in Aurillac. This is a street theatre festival where artists from all over the world participate. It is of a high standard and has a continuous programme with dozens of 'stages'.
In September, the Renaissance festival 'le Roi des oiseaux' takes place in Puy-en-Velay. There is no car traffic in the centre then. Participants and many visitors are dressed up, meals are prepared in the tradition of the Renaissance, and all activities and performances also come directly from this period.
This part of Auvergne generally has long, hot summers that start early, a beautiful autumn that can give warm, sunny days until December. A cold winter with snow in the mountains. The number of rainy days is dwarfed by that of the Netherlands. The climate in the valley where the gîte is located is unique in Cantal. The Alagnon valley is deeply hidden between the Cézalier, Monts de Cantal, Monts de Livraidois and Monts de Margeride. As a result, the valley is well protected from Atlantic influences and cold north winds. Not surprisingly, sub-Mediterranean plant species can be found here.
Blesle has a continental climate and lies at an altitude of about 500m. As a result, the contrasts between day and night are greater. In summer it is pleasantly warm during the day, 25 to 30°C, at night it cools down to below 15°C.
