Restaurants, food & wine
Monein is the stronghold of the famous Jurançon wine and is home to a number of renowned wineries.
The Jurançon vineyards are the jewel in the crown of Béarn, stretching over 1,400 hectares of green hills with uninterrupted views of the Pyrenees. These hillside vineyards benefit from an exceptional microclimate, combining mountain influences with the mildness of the ocean, giving the wines a unique identity.
There are no big, imposing châteaux here, just a mosaic of small plots of land tucked away at the bend in the road, shaped by passionate men and women. These winegrowers, true craftsmen of the land, perpetuate their ancestral know-how with a deep respect for their terroir. Each estate, often family-run, tells a story, the story of the link between the vine, the land and the generations that have succeeded one another.
The emblematic grape varieties of Jurançon, Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng, are the pillars of this wine production. These grapes, harvested by hand and sometimes late for the sweet wines, give birth to crus with enchanting aromas of peach, pear, vanilla and sometimes even exotic fruit and honey. The dry Jurançon, lively and fresh, is distinguished by its minerality, while the mellow, rich and generous, offers unequalled aromatic complexity.
A generous and tasty terroir
At the passionate restaurants of the Cœur de Béarn, each plate tells a story: the story of a rich terroir and a know-how passed on with love. Let yourself be tempted by local specialities that awaken the senses:
- Foie gras, a staple of Béarn gastronomy.
- Pyrenean lamb, delicately cooked to sublimate its tenderness.
- Farm-raised veal, tasty and reared in the traditional way.
- Authentic cheeses that evoke the Pyrenees.
- Juicy Roussanne peaches, a fruit of unequalled sweetness.
And to accompany these dishes, Jurançon, the golden nectar that is the pride of the local winegrowers.
There is a wide choice of typical restaurants and inns in the vicinity of Domaine Helaku.
Activities
From the gîte, there are numerous walks across the hillsides offering unique views of the Pyrenees.
Nearby, discover the towns of Monein, its impressive St Girons church, its covered market square and its many events, Orthez and its 13th-century château, La Commande and its 12th-century commandery, Oloron-Ste-Marie, its UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral and its medieval quarter, Navarrenx one of the most beautiful villages in France and its fortified bastide, Pau with its quarters full of history and Henry IV's famous château.
You can also take advantage of the many cool waters in Béarn (rivers, lakes, Gaves) to practise a variety of water sports or just relax by the water (Orthez water sports centre).
Just a stone's throw from the Basque country, there are plenty of activities, monuments and cultural sights to discover.
You can also discover the Ossau valley, the Artouste little train, the Aspe valley and Spain, all very close by.

Further remarks
After taking a small country road with little traffic, a 700-metre-long tree-lined private road leads you to the estate
consisting of 3 large typical buildings (former 18th-century farmhouses).
The buildings are set on a hill in the centre of 22 private hectares of meadows and woods, crossed by an unspoilt river full of fish, with a commanding view over the surrounding rolling countryside, a haven of peace and serenity.
You'll be welcomed by our many animals, and you'll be able to move among them:
the dogs Magnus, Lluvia, Mélino and Wasabi; the horses Clandestino (known as Destino), Encierro (known as Cierro), Kébir (known as Kikou), Vega, Xampla and the latest addition M'Raude; the pony Spirou; and of course the bees.
We want to protect our environment as much as possible. So we don't use any chemical treatments on our land, and we've signed an agreement with the Conservatoire d'Espaces Naturels de Nouvelle Aquitaine to preserve wetlands and drylands.
As a result, the Helaku estate is regularly checked for the presence of rare or endangered species, and a number of remarkable and protected animal and plant specimens have come to light (Serpipers and Swamp Copper butterflies, European Greenfinches, Royal Kites, the Agile Frog, the Wall Lizard, the Isopyre Faux-Pygamon and One-flowered Meliqueur plants, etc.).
193 plant species and 81 animal species
have been recorded on the Helaku Estate, including dragonflies, roe deer, European otters, foxes, spotted salamanders, mallards, goshawks, black kites, green woodpeckers, tawny owls, bats, hedgehogs, genets, weasels, herons, tits, wagtails, jays, buzzards, warblers, etc.
A converted farmhouse:
In 2019, we are renovating and refurbishing an 18th-century farmhouse.
(the stone engraved and inlaid on the south wall bears witness to this; its meaning: "Vous qui par dedans ici passent, pensez à l'amour - 1786 - Ramonteu" Ramonteu is the name of the owner at the time; in Béarn, a plaque of this style was once erected on the house at the entrance of the 1st couple to settle there, so the building could be even older than this date of 1786).
The site was in the process of being abandoned and after 4 years of renovation, we set up our farming business (horse breeding and beekeeping).
Our aim was to create a place that would be as welcoming as possible for people who love nature and want to discover this magnificent region of Béarn at the foot of the Pyrenees, with its famous Jurançon vineyards.
We have named the estate "Helaku", which means "day full of sun" in Amerindian.
This is our corner of paradise, and we'd like to give you the key to a stay with friends or family to find or rediscover peace and serenity.
The farmhouse is divided into 4 independent gîtes (flats) with shared access to the grounds.
Areas have been set aside for you to enjoy lunch or dinner in the shade of our trees; barbecue and plancha are available.
For your activities, a petanque court has been laid out for you to play with friends or family. You can relax in the library area in an old converted barn, in a typical, serene atmosphere, or dip your feet in the fresh water of our river, or take a leisurely stroll around our 22 hectares of private grounds.
Linen is provided for each gîte: undersheets, sheets, duvet covers, pillowcases, bath sheets and towels, bathmats, hand towels, tea towels and potholders. Duvets and pillowcases are provided for your comfort, and beds are made up.
At the end of your stay, we are responsible for cleaning the premises as normal.
Each gîte is equipped for your daily comfort
