The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

Le Mazet is a charming 4-star house and with its honey-coloured stone walls on which jasmine grows rampantly, typical of the Dordogne. From your private garden and the sitting room, you have breathtaking views of the 12th-century church across the valley.

Enjoy the summer sun in the garden with its loungers, deck chairs, barbecue, dining table and chairs, or cool down in the shade of the huge oak tree or the parasol. In the cooler months, enjoy all the comforts Le Mazet has to offer in the sitting room by a crackling fire. There is an EV charger and high-speed internet (250Mpbs +).

Reached via the garden, partially worn away ancient sandstone steps lead to the living room with open kitchen (36m2) on the upper floor. The sunny room has a high beamed ceiling, windows in all four walls and a large fireplace with wood-burning stove. Everything is provided for optimal relaxation: a lovely sofa, dining table and chairs, kitchen, satellite TV, a Blu Ray player, wireless speaker and free Wi-Fi. A staircase leads to the lower bedroom and bathroom. The bedroom has a double bed, make-up table and wardrobe. The spacious bathroom has a large walk-in shower, sink, toilet and towel radiator.

Le Mazet is located in the village of Sainte Croix, right between the fortified medieval bastide towns of Monpazier and Beaumont du Périgord and only a 40-minute drive from Bergerac airport. There is plenty to do in the area. There are plenty of markets selling local produce or antiques. The region is famous for its castles, churches and prehistoric caves. Restaurants serve the region's specialities, such as truffles, duck and foie gras, among others. As soon as you step out the door, there are beautiful walks to be made and a well-known cycling route to follow; canoeing on the Dordogne, golfing or horse riding are just a few of the possibilities. We are happy to advise where the sights are and what to do.

We are delighted that Le Mazet has been awarded 4 stars by the Dordogne Perigord Tourism Council on behalf of the French Ministry of Tourism. The classification is based on the facilities, space, condition of the accommodation and the information we offer our guests. The Times voted us as one of the 50 Best Holidays in France for 2019. The Daily Telegraph, the UK's leading quality newspaper, published an online review of Le Mazet and rated us with a 9/10.

There is an allocated parking space with a fast charging point (22kW; type 2 connector) for electric vehicles. You will receive a pass from us to activate the charger and record your consumption, so you will receive an itemised bill at the end of your stay.

Wine tours, prehistoric caves and much more.

Le Mas is the most beautiful place I’ve ever stayed in. Perfect for my special birthday celebrations with family. Rupert and Franck were perfect hosts, offering great suggestions for activities and restaurants, even providing a personal taxi service. If you want something extra special book this place.

What a beautiful place! I can't rate it highly enough. Rupert and Franck were wonderful hosts - friendly and accommodating. Both houses were fully kitted out with everything you might need and the bedrooms and living areas were spacious and comfortable . The outdoor dining area was excellent too and where every mealtime took place. The pool, with its beautiful views of the Dordogne countryside, was fantastic. You really didn't need or want to go anywhere else! Definitely a place to recommend and a family holiday to remember. Family in this case ranging from baby of 9 weeks to grandparents! Thank you Rupert and Franck. We hope to see you again!

We stayed at Le Mas & Le Mazet as a party of 13 for my 60th birthday. Right from the off Rupert was welcoming ensuring the booking experience was excellent. We arrived to find the houses beautifully clean with everything you could possibly need or want including welcome goodies.
The pool area and outside area was absolutely perfect with particular note the outside kitchen with BBQ.
Rupert was easily contactable and arranged everything from wine tasting to a massage as well as recommendations for nearby places of interest and food options. Nothing was too much trouble.
I can’t recommend this place enough. Just book it and I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. I sincerely hope we can return one day soon.
    Thank you Rupert and Franck.

The region is famous for its culinary options. There are several restaurants in the vicinity where you can enjoy a good meal.
If you want to cook and experiment with French cuisine yourself, you can get your ingredients at the various markets held each week in the villages. Furthermore, Beaumont (12 minutes) offers a large supermarket, bakeries, pharmacy, bank, post office and other shops. Monpazier (12 minutes) also has a wide range of shops.

Activities

Here is a selection of the various activities you can undertake using Le Mazet as a base. We will be happy to advise you on walking and cycling routes, rental locations for bike, car or boat, make a reservation or provide you with route maps.

Hiking over the gently rolling hills: enjoy beautiful walking routes as soon as you step outside your door. Walk through woods and fields or along country roads to the medieval town of Montferrand de Périgord (20 minutes' walk away) or to the 12th-century church of Sainte Croix (20 minutes' walk away). There are plenty of hiking trails nearby, for example from Monpazier to the megaliths around the town.

Hiking trails: there are trails nearby to suit all tastes, from the Grand Randonnées such as the GR36 and GR6 to waymarked circular walks (5km to 40km) around Monpazier.

Bike rental: if you don't want to or can't bring your own bike, BikeHireDirect rents bikes with helmet and lock through us. They will be brought to and collected from Le Mas & Le Mazet. You have nothing to worry about. We get a small commission which we pass on to you.

Cycling: 500 metres from the property is cycle route 26, a 70km circular route past Monpazier, Cadouin and back. There are many other cycling routes nearby that take you off the beaten track along the hidden treasures of the Dordogne.

Canoeing: canoes (from 1 to 4 people) can be hired at various locations in the Dordogne and Vézère valleys. The rental company will pick you up at the end of the trip and take you back to the starting point in a minibus. Canoeing is a great way to experience the beauty and grandeur of nature, castles and villages in the valley.

Swimming in the river: in Le Buisson (25 minutes away) you can swim in the Dordogne River. There is an 800-metre-long supervised beach.

Boat trips on the Dordogne: if you want to see castles high up on the steep banks, you can take a boat departing from Beynac or La Roque Gageac. Chances of spotting a kingfisher, cormorant, heron, kite, coypu or turtle offer the boats with departures in Bergerac.

Horse riding: horse riding is possible at one of the local equestrian centres.

Golf: there are several courses in the area where you can play: Château les Merles - 9 holes (30 minutes away); Lolivarie golf club - 18 holes (30 minutes away); La Marterie - 18 holes (50 minutes away); Château des Vigiers - 18 holes (1 hour away).

Markets: weekly markets are held in Beaumont on Tuesdays and Saturdays and in Monpazier on Thursdays. There are further specialised markets in the mushroom and truffle seasons and night markets in summer.

Wine tours: there are several wine routes to follow, vineyards and wine châteaux to visit and wine events to experience. The beautiful wines of Monbazillac and Bergerac gladly reveal themselves to the enthusiast.

Concerts and holidays: concerts are regularly organised with not the least names on the bill. Feasts are often held in honour of the name days of saints. We can inform you about the cultural agenda during the period of your stay.

Evening torchlight tours: in summer, from around 9pm, take part in one of the guided torchlight tours in Monpazier, Beaumont du Périgord, or Cadouin. Guided tours are also offered during the day.

Prehistoric excavations and caves: more than 50 caves, rock shelters, settlement remains and burial sites have already been discovered in the Périgord. Visit the National Prehistoric Museum in Les Eyzies (45 minutes away), also several caves and settlements to visit and, of course, the famous rock paintings of Lascaux.

Castles: there are reputedly 1001 castles in the Dordogne! Highlights are undoubtedly the castles of Biron, Beynac, Castelnaud (with knightly games and activities based on its weapons collection) and Les Milandes, the former home of Josephine Baker with falcon shows in the castle gardens.

Gardens: there are two magical gardens not to be missed if you have the time: the classic Jardins du Manoir d'Eyrignac (1 hour 15 minutes away) and the hanging gardens of le Château de Marqueyssac (50 minutes away).

Naturally formed caves: the caves of Maxange (30 minutes away) are praised for the size and quality of the stalactites and stalagmites and the unusual and eccentric crystal panels.
