In the south of France, on the banks of the River Tarn, lies Albi, a city you might not have heard of, but which will instantly capture your heart on your first visit. This medieval treasure is often overlooked by travellers heading to larger cities, but that’s exactly what makes its charm so special: here you’ll find the perfect mix of history, culture, and a relaxed French atmosphere.
A city with character
The most striking landmark in Albi is undoubtedly the Sainte-Cécile Cathedral. This imposing brick cathedral, built in the 13th century, towers high above the city and is one of the largest brick buildings in the world. Inside, you’ll find a breathtakingly painted interior that will quite literally stop you in your tracks.
Right next to the cathedral is the Palais de la Berbie, a former episcopal palace that now houses the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum. Here you can discover works by the famous painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who was born in Albi itself.
Wander through the streets
Albi is best explored on foot. Stroll through winding streets lined with half-timbered houses and boutiques, enjoy a coffee on a sunny terrace, or cross the old Pont Vieux bridge for a beautiful view of the city and the river.
A tip for your visit
Plan your visit in the morning so you can watch the city come to life, then enjoy a leisurely lunch in one of the lively squares. Be sure to try local specialities such as cassoulet or Gaillac wine from the region. Visiting on a Saturday? The market around the cathedral is a feast for the senses – fresh produce, the scent of spices, and the cheerful chatter of local traders.
Extra tip: Albi is just an hour’s drive from Toulouse, making it easy to combine with a stay in the region. Have a look at our holiday homes in the Tarn for a charming gite as your base.
