The department of Tarn-et-Garonne

The sparsely populated region in southwest France belonged to the Gascony at the time of the Hundred Years War, and  Languedoc. Tarn-et-Garonne is now part of the Midi-Pyrénées region. From your cottage you can enjoy green hills, forests, fields of sunflowers, fruit orchards, rivers, ravines, causses (limestone plateaux), canyons, vineyards and valleys.

An active holiday

Hiking, cycling, running, mountain biking and horse riding can be done for example in the Quercy, the foothills of the Massif Central. Or walk a part of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela through the beautiful old villages of Auvillar and Lauzerte, where you pass the aqueduct over the Tarn River. A beautiful green bicycle tour is created on the towpath of the Canal des Deux Mers. Boating on the canal is also wonderful. Special experiences are the boat lift at Montech and the view on the Canal du Pont Canor. Good places for canoeing, swimming, climbing and hang gliding are the area around the river Aveyron with the Gorges de l’Aveyron and the Garonne.

Culture in your holiday in the Tarn-et-Garonne

From your holiday home you can make cultural day trips. For example to the castle of Cas, the abbey of Beaulieu and Moissac, the Réalville founded by Philip the Fair, and the churches of Saint-Martin in Montpezat-de-Quercy and Saint-Pierre in Boating. Striking are the old water mills and dovecotes scattered in the region. Enjoy the southern ambiance with a game of petanque on the village square. Or watch a game of rugby which is very popular here. Musical festivities are organised around the composer Offenbach in the form of an operetta festival at the castle of Bruniquel. There is also Vibrations Moissac and the international jazz festival in the capital of the department, Montauban.

Culinary delights in the Tarn-et-Garonne

Truffles, porcini mushrooms, garlic, foie gras, confit chestnuts and a lot more delicacies can be found at one of the cozy markets such as in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val. Also enjoy the variety of fresh fruit: 80% of all fruit from the region comes from Tarn-et-Garonne.
