The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

Welcome! The Château des Edelins Castle flat is located on the ground floor in the oldest part of our château (dating from 1638). With, as it should be, thick castle walls, high ceilings, antique parquet floors and marble fireplaces. It is just under 100 m2 in total, completely renovated and has its own entrance.

The flat is sunny and all rooms are next to each other, on the ground floor, overlooking our sizeable garden (4 hectares). In the 2 bedrooms (one of which is very spacious) the new large beds are made for you on arrival: a double bed of 1.80 x 2.00 and two single beds of 0.90 x 2.00 m. In the large bedroom there is enough space for an extra bed or a good cot with mattress (no camping cot).

In the bright living/dining room with French doors to your terrace (south-facing, with its own garden furniture) you will find, among other things, a nice couch, large dining table, high chairs (if you need them) and there is fast (fibreglass!) wireless internet. The kitchen includes a dishwasher, there are children's plates, children's cutlery and similar utensils. There is a comfortable bathroom with (rain) shower and possibly a baby bath. There is central heating, possibly combined with electric heating. And in total, the flat is just under 100 m2.

You are of course also welcome in the rest of the château. Feel free to come and have a good(!) coffee or breakfast. You can often enjoy dinner with us in the evening (young children can be put to bed and eat quietly together). We have nice wines in the cellar or come and have a chat in the kitchen. And there is a washer and dryer available: we will be happy to do some laundry for you.

Surroundings

Château des Edelins is situated on a hill: the view is wide, beautiful and at the bottom of the hill, within walking distance, there is a river, with on its banks a large playground with picnic tables and sports fields including a tennis court (free for our guests), running track and exercise course. The château is directly adjacent to Bayet, a typical French village where the streets, houses, church (from the 12th century!) and café have been well renovated. At the café, also within walking distance, you can eat very French food and order your fresh baguette for the next morning. In most cases, you will be recognised the next day and get a hand from the owner.
It is rural here, but less than 10 minutes by car is already a nice town and with 20 minutes you are in Vichy or Moulins, two very nice towns, about which more below. We also live in the château ourselves and really like the combination of rural tranquillity, yet with the city close by. We don't feel like we're in the middle of nowhere, although you can also walk or cycle through unspoilt countryside here for days at a time.

Our garden is almost a park and measures about 4 hectares. We have a brand new swimming pool, heated by solar panels. There is play equipment (swings and slide), an orchard and nice corners in the sun or shade. The castle flat has a private terrace. You share the rest of the large garden with our other guests: in addition to the château flat, we have 5 luxury chambres d'hôtes (rooms) and a detached gite. There is absolutely plenty of space: you can relax, children have plenty of opportunities to play and nobody bothers each other.

In high season, we often rent our rooms to families with children, for these rooms we offer kitchen facilities in the chateau. Because of the lack of discos, multicoloured wild water slides and the like, it's especially fun for children aged 0 to 12 here, so we receive many children of the same age. Who immediately start playing with each other.

Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule is 7 km away and is a nice little town with a sizeable supermarket, market on Saturday mornings, nice shops and restaurants. It is one of the oldest wine regions in France: there is a wine route and we are happy to provide tasting tips.
Vichy is a little further away, 20 minutes by car, and is a beautiful city: enjoy the chic architecture and shops, the opéra, the many restaurants and a daily covered market that makes your mouth water. There is also a brand new tropical swimming pool here.
Moulins is also 20-25 minutes away by car and has medieval charm. A little closer is Charroux, one of France's most beautiful towns. And true metropolitan cosiness can be found in Montluçon and Clermont-Ferrand, both cities are 45 minutes away by car. Nice shops and restaurants here too. Montluçon is built around a medieval castle and Clermont has a large square with many fountains (summer water fun for the children!). A day out with the children can go to Le Pal: an amusement park with a beautiful zoo or to the educational amusement park Vulcania - both parks are 45 minutes away by car.

Restaurants, food & wine

Long live France! We ourselves enjoy all the delights this country has to offer and are happy to give you good tips: restaurants, markets, farm produce.
Of course you can eat with us: we serve (almost every day) an extensive 3-course menu with as much organic and local products of the season as possible.
We love to cook, so come and have a look in the kitchen and visit Table in France's food blog at home: www.tafelinfrankrijk.blogspot.com.

Furthermore, we border directly on one of France's oldest wine regions: Saint-Pourçain. Its winemakers were awarded AOC status in 2009. There are interesting (but also just plain delicious) wines to be found here. Feel free to ask us for some addresses.

And of course you can eat out everywhere, for a lot or a little, with or without stars, with lots of blabla or just very child-friendly.

Activities

We have a brand new swimming pool, heated by solar panels. And you can go hiking and cycling beautifully here. And there are nice towns nearby with trendy museums and fine restaurants.
Along the château there is a walking trail, but there are more in our hills or more rugged, in the area of the Puy de Dome. We are very enthusiastic (racing) cyclists ourselves, so we are happy to tell you the best routes! And there is a nice bike rental shop nearby these days that has all kinds of bikes available, including various electric bikes and mountain bikes.

In our garden you can use our swimming pool, but there is also a (partly covered and partly open) swimming paradise in Vichy or in Moulins, 20 minutes by car (in case you don't come in summer).
In the garden there is a playground, there are football goals and children's bikes, there is plenty of space for football, hide-and-seek and other games. And if possible, we can light a fire in the evening (Nienke loves it ;-)

There are several golf courses in the vicinity. Some 9 holes, one 18 holes and even an 18-hole European class one.

You can also canoe nearby, go horse riding (there is a nice riding school, which I will gladly put you in touch with) and skiing (in winter). There is a beautiful ski area a good hour's drive away, for guaranteed winter sports fun!

  • Ron en Neeltje from Rotterdam,

    10 stars

  • Thijs Leydens from Haarlem,

    10 stars

Overnacht bij Henk en Nienke als tussenstop op weg naar Zuid-Frankrijk. Wij voelden ons meteen thuis bij Chateau Edelins: lekker luxe, maar zonder stijf gedoe.
Goed eten, mooi wijntje erbij, gul geschonken. Lekker bed, mooie kamers, met de 2 kids. Ideaal start- en eindpunt van onze vakantie!

    Comment from Nienke VUIJK
