The house
"Gîtes de France" has officially awarded 4 ears (épis) to this gîte, the East wing of the 3-bedroom hunting lodge in Champagne, with exclusive access to the large swimming pool and castle park; i.e. 4 stars.
Living room with fireplace of "pierre de taille" / natural stone + kitchen (37.5m²+ 4m²), oven + pyrolysis and four induction hobs, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator, freezer, washing machine, dryer; satellite colour TV + video and DVD, telephone, 2 WCs, 2 bathrooms (bath and shower), 3 bedrooms; pressure cooker, barbecue, garden furniture, deckchairs. Electric wall heating in all rooms. N.B. The sofa can easily be converted into a very comfortable double bed if rented by more than six persons.
Garage and horse stables possible.
This is an entirely restored and renovated hunting lodge with two wings, the East wing (3 bedrooms) and a West wing with 2 bedrooms; two gites that can be rented separately or as a whole, connected, in the heart of the historic Argonne forest.
N.B. On 16 May 2011 the private covered swimming pool (5x10m) was opened, sheltered in the castle park; exclusively for guests of the East wing, or for guests who rented the entire hunting lodge.

The hunting lodge is situated on a hill in the CHAMPAGNE region, 9 km from Sainte-Ménéhould, 55 km from Chalons-en- Champagne, 54 km from Verdun (with many war memories from 1914-1918), 80 km from Reims, 128 km from Nancy, 200 km from Paris and 450 km from The Hague, in the heart of the Argonne region.
It is part of an estate with parkland, stables and other outbuildings, and the 16th/18th century hilltop castle of Villers, which for three hundred years belonged to the family of the famous German-born poet, biologist, explorer and author of the early 19th century bestseller "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte," Adelbert von Chamisso.
It towers over the River Aisne, at the beginning of the village of Villers-en-Argonne, which has about 250 inhabitants, with a baker's who visits every day and a bargain-priced but excellent village restaurant nearby. It is embedded in a beautiful hilly landscape in the middle of the woods.
For those interested in the Champagne tour, harvest time for the Champagne grapes begins in mid August.
Apart from summer with its special attractions, autumn is perhaps the most spectacular period of the year. The mighty forests of the Argonne are at their most beautiful then and the animal world, boar and deer, much more than usual abundantly visible - and audible in this spring time.
At the same time, the then (covered) swimming pool is still fully usable despite the cool nights. The water was 25 degrees on 6 October and the air "indoors" 30 degrees.
N.B. in 2014 - 2018 the First World War is commemorated, "La Grande Guerre," The Great War 1914 - 1918. The hunting lodge is located in the middle of the War Zone with numerous memorial sites. Verdun, the Stalingrad of WWI, is 55km away.

Wij een familie van 12 personen hebben van 22 juli tot 29 juli 2023 een vakantie doorgebracht in de Loft en het Jachthuis. Een fantastische ervaring, de accommodatie is perfect, smaakvol ingericht, is voorzien van alle gemakken en vooral goede bedden. Het zwembad, fraai gelegen, is voldoende groot om een baantje te trekken en aan de randen van het zwembad is het goed toeven. We hebben ook veel gebruik gemaakt van de professionele tafeltennistafel en het tafelvoetbalspel.
De weergoden lieten het afweten maar konden onze pret niet drukken.
Er is veel gewandeld en we hebben op aangeven van Johannes en Laurence interessante uitstapjes gemaakt. Johannes is voor wat betreft informatie over landgoed, de omgeving, restaurants en bezienswaardigheden over WO1 een vraagbaak, hij weet alles, en is altijd bereikbaar.

Vandaag zijn wij terug in Nederland na onze korte vakantie in het Pavillon de Chasse. Het verblijf is ons uitstekend bevallen. Mevr. Muller heeft ons hartelijk ontvangen en gezorgd dat ons verblijf vlekkeloos verliep. Wij waren onder de indruk van het vakantiehuis en de faciliteiten die het biedt.

Restaurants, food & wine
The CHAMPAGNE is known for its excellent food culture and good wines. In the vicinity are also very nice restaurants where you eat very well for surprisingly little money. Champagne fields and Champagne houses already 30 km away (Bassuet).
By the way, the baker comes every day with fresh bread, even on Sunday morning.
And why not try the new TGV-Est by starting from the heart of Argonne forest for a day
stroll through Paris and have dinner in Reims: 50 departures a day to the centre of Paris in 40 minutes from Reims: distance hunting lodge-Reims is less than 45 minutes by car.
Activities
Hiking, swimming, table tennis, horseback riding, cross-country cycling are the main outdoor pastimes on the estate.
For horse lovers, it is a true paradise due to the beautiful water and woody surroundings and the varied landscape, hills and valleys. You can bring your horse and stable it at the hunting lodge; there is also a riding school (horse/pony club) in Villers itself.
Birdwatchers can also enjoy themselves here. And in September, the belling of the stags in rut in the Argonne forest at the foot of the estate is a spectacular and fairy-tale like event, which people come to watch from afar.
N.B. Exclusive access to the Castle Park, where the swimming pool is also located. Quite apart from that, the hunting lodge with its garden and orchard itself covers 3 hectares to explore and walk in - and for the free gathering of fresh cherries, plums, nuts, pears and apples, according to the season. A small playground with climbing tower, swings and slide is located aside but if desired within sight of the hunting lodge; furthermore you will find living room games, books, comics, children's videos, jack, badminton. There are 6 children's bicycles for ages 3 - 17 years, and 3 adult bicycles.
The existing pool was replaced mid-2011 at the same spacious place by a luxury sunken pool of 5 x 10 meters; partly 120 cm, partly 180 cm deep (water level). The canopy (15 long x 6.80 wide x 1.98/2.28 m high) is easily retractable (solar energy) during the summer months, so that the pool itself is completely in the open air. The pool can thus be used not only in July and August, but also in June and September and even in May and October.
Meanwhile, the renovation of the right wing of the "grande ecurie" has been completed with
- new beautiful hardwood horse boxes to 18th century model on estates like this, but with 12m2 space each, and
- a games room with a top quality (Cornilleau outdoor 55) table tennis set-up with accessories.
The following activities in the vicinity:
Hunting (deer and boar), fishing, swimming, hiking, mountain/cross country biking, horse riding, water sports, bird watching, tennis. Lac de Der (Europe's largest man-made lake with bird sanctuary; casino and all possible sports facilities) at 50 km.
An 18 hole golf course, the Chalons Champagne Golf Club at Courtisols, is less than 35 km away; and at 90 km, near Reims, the well-known Championship Golf course, Golf de Reims Champagne at Gueux (Championships).
For hunting enthusiasts: this is the only region in France (outside the Elsas), where you can hunt individually (with a guide), in June, July, August and September. (Collective) drives with dogs (approx. 30 people) are held from October to February.

The hunting lodge has two wings, the East wing (3 bedrooms) and the West wing (2 bedrooms), connected. This is the East wing. Both wings can be rented separately, but also the hunting lodge as a whole.

Additional price info and offers
High season rental: months of July and August. Mid-season: June and September, and holiday periods in spring, autumn and at Christmas/Old and New Year. Low season: other periods.
Apart from the rental prices indicated on gites.com, the following options are available on request:
- 12€ for bed and hand linen p.p.
- 65€ for cleaning
- 30€ p.w.for firewood.
- 20€ p.w. f 3€ p.d.access WiFi system in the hunting lodge
- for more than 6 persons there is a supplement of 70€ per week per person or 20€ p.p per day .
- for dogs a supplement of 40€ per dog p.w / 10€ p.d. By the way, only well-trained dogs are allowed, due to risk of damage. The deposit (300 E) will not be refunded on departure, but within a week after departure.
Between 1 October and 1 May there is a general surcharge of 20 euro p.d. for the central (electric) heating.
Apart from this heating surcharge in the autumn/spring and winter season and a tourist tax (Taxe de Séjour) introduced since 1/1/20, there are no mandatory surcharges; only options.
Price long week-end (Friday Saturday-Sunday or Saturday-Sunday Monday): 420€ low season and 450€ mid season
N.B. When renting for longer periods during low season, very significant reductions are possible.
