The house
Romantic Walnut cottage was originally built in the 16th century but has been lovingly restored to combine a high standard of modern comfort with traditional stonework and a dramatic fireplace which provides for a cosy winter fire and makes the cottage available all year round. The mezzanine bedroom overlooks the open plan living area with lounge, dining room and a modern kitchen.
A cot can be provided on request.
The bathroom is down stairs so the cottage may not be suitable for people with mobility difficulties

Welcome to rural Calvados, beautiful and peaceful, it's a great place to relax and unwind with an abundance of wildlife as a distraction.
Vire is an ancient walled city, built in the 12th Century by Henry Beauclerc, Duke of Normandy, son of William the Conqueror. After the 1944 bombings parts of the medieval town were spared and are still visible today in the rebuilt city. Vire also has an 18 hole Municipal Golf Course that is very well maintained and overlooks Lac de la Dathee, here you can take part in water sports, go fishing or stroll around the 5km perimeter and enjoy the peace and quiet at one of the many picnic areas. The lake is bordered in parts by forest and also has a weir and a small waterfall.
The location is ideally situated to visit the unique Abby on Mont Saint Michel, an amazing Benedictine abbey built on a granite peak out to sea, the second most visited attraction in France after the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The Mont provides a breathtaking spectacle that can be reached by a causeway that links it to the mainland.
Bayeaux and Arromanches. See the Bayeaux Tapestry dating back to the 11th Century telling the story of William the Conqueror's quest of England. Bayeaux also has the largest British Commonwealth World War 2 Cemetery. Visit Arromanches where you can see the remains of the huge "Mulberry Harbour" off the D-day gold beach used to land thousands of men during the Battle of Normandy. See the 360 degree cinema which tells the D-day story.
D-Day Landing Beaches 1944. Visit Omaha and Utah beaches, Pointe du Hoc and the US Parachute forces landing sites. Saint Mere Eglise where the parachutist is hanging by his canopy from the church tower!Museums and memorials tell the story. You cannot help but be moved - poignant and thought provoking.

We hebben een heerlijke tijd gehad in Walnut Cottage. Het huisje is knus, netjes en schoon met voldoende ruimte voor 2 personen. Heerlijk warm water om te douchen. Julie en Nigel zijn hele warme lieve mensen en super gastvrij. Ze hebben ons goed in de watten gelegd. We hebben het ontzettend naar onze zin gehad. Het is een aanrader om naar Walnut Cottage te gaan en kennis te maken met Julie en Nigel.

Echt een fantastisch huis! Ruim en genoeg te doen voor kinderen. En op warme dagen een heerlijk zwembadje! Het uitzicht is prachtig en heerlijk rustig. Nigel en Julie zijn zo relaxed, lief en zeer behulpzaam. Echt genoten, voor herhaling vatbaar!

Restaurants, food & wine
There are plenty of restaurants, bars and local markets.in the Centre of Vire.
The cottage can be self-catering for private holidays but we also offer a continental, vegetarian or a full English breakfast which can be served either in the cottage or at one of the outside seating areas. Dinner is available on request, we grow our own seasonal vegetables and our free range chickens provide tasty eggs.
All our meals are freshly made from locally sourced produce.
Activities
Welcome to rural Calvados, beautiful and peaceful, it's a great place to relax and unwind with an abundance of wildlife as a distraction.
Normandy has so much to offer, such beautiful countryside, an abundance of pretty fishing towns and miles of sandy beaches. A rich gastronomic area, renowned for the Camembert and Pont l’Eveque cheeses, cider and Calvados liqueur.
The pretty market town of Vire is a 5 minute drive away where you will find supermarkets, boulangerie, patisserie, bars and restaurants. The market is on a Friday morning and you'll find all sorts of lovely food and bargains. It surrounds the remains of a castle and there are some lovely cafes to sit and watch the world go by. There is a swimming pool in Vire with water slides, jets and a family pool that is very well priced. You will also find a municipal golf course, the river and the stunning Lac Dathee.
The D day landing beaches and gorgeous coastal resorts such as Granville, Houlgate and Carrolles (amazing rock pools here!) are all about one hour’s drive away. The beaches are amazing for kids with safe sandy beaches and life guards.
The Bayeux Tapestry, Mont Saint Michel and the British War Cemetery are also within an hour’s drive.
If you want to explore beautiful scenery then the area of Suisse Normande and Bagnoles de Lorne are also within an hour’s drive. The stunning Mont Cerissy Belle Etoille is around 25 minutes away and is not only great fun for kids but beautiful and historical too. Set in the grounds of an old castle there are beautiful wooded walks, view points, a playground and mini golf! Take a picnic and spend the day.
You can have lunch on the river in Pont D'Ouilly 35 minutes away and even hire a kayak down the river.
The area is great for walking or cycling with many marked trails, two of which are just 5 minutes away from the property.

The cottage is a non-smoking environment. If you do need to smoke, please smoke in the parking area and dispose of your cigarettes afterward.
We request that guests leave the cottage clean and tidy as we do not charge a cleaning fee.

Arrival times are from 16.00 and departure time is 10.00 although we will try to be flexible with this wherever possible.
Bed linen and towels for inside the properties are provided, beach towels are not provided.
