The house

  • Quiet, rural area

This luxury hideaway, privately located in the glorious Charente countryside, is just a few minutes from Aubeterre Sur Dronne, one of France's most beautiful villages. The one bedroomed gite with king size bed is tastefully furnished and has french doors leading out onto a private patio and 10x5m swimming pool, both with stunning rural views. Perfect for couples looking for peace and quiet amidst glorious countryside but close to many excellent restaurants and with plenty of local attractions and activities to enjoy nearby.

'Les Cimes des Arbres' literally means 'the tops of the trees', and being set on a ridge, the panoramic views from the gite across the lush green landscape are simply stunning. Facing south, the sheltered, flower-filled courtyard in front is a real sun trap, and with a table for two right outside, you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast of coffee and croissants from the local boulangerie on those warm, sunny mornings. And if you prefer a little welcome shade later on, you can relax under a parasol on the L-shaped outdoor sofa nestled amidst the honeysuckle and jasmine, making yourself comfortable on the cushions while you enjoy a glass of wine and a good book or perhaps have an afternoon snooze.

You will have exclusive use of the 10x5m heated pool which is right next to the gite. It has Roman steps leading down onto a gently sloping bottom, deep enough to swim with ease yet shallow enough to relax in and cool off after sunbathing. Whilst not a true infinity pool, the ground drops steeply away from the front edge, allowing you uninterrupted views even when swimming. A large south facing decked area with sunbeds and parasols runs alongside the back of the pool, plus there is another delightful eating area under the banana tree, perfect for whiling away the evening while you enjoy some French fare and, finally, watch the sun go down across the tree tops.

The gite has been fitted out to the highest standard, with a French style to the furnishings and decoration. Much of the furniture has been sourced from local 'Brocantes' and lovingly refurbished with chalk paints for an authentic French shabby-chic look.

The sitting and kitchen area is light, bright and sun-filled due to the double-width french doors which open directly out onto the private courtyard. The solid wood kitchen is well equipped with fridge, washing machine, combination microwave oven and ceramic hob, plus a Nespresso coffee-maker for those of you who appreciate really good coffee. And for those rare occasions when you might want to eat inside, there is a breakfast bar just perfect for two. You'll also find a kettle style charcoal barbecue for your private use in the courtyard outside. In the cosy sitting area, there are 2 leather tub-chairs facing a wall-mounted flat screen smart tv with dvd player, Freeview box and Netflix available, plus free wi-fi of course.

The Rococo inspired bedroom has an elaborate and fabulously comfortable king size bed with non-allergy duvet and pillows dressed in smooth, soft 600-count cotton bed linen. The bedroom window offers views across the courtyard and scenery beyond, ideal if you want to enjoy a lazy breakfast in bed. There's plenty of hanging and drawer space in the characterful painted French furniture. There is a bright, modern en suite with a rococo sink unit and beautiful French mirror over, plus a large walk-in shower.

The gite has its own entrance and private parking at the rear of the property, so you can come and go as you please.

Les Cimes des Arbres is the last property on a rural no-through lane which continues on to a green lane and offers lovely walks around the beautiful charente countryside straight from your door. Famous for its fields of sunflowers, the rolling green landscape of the Charente is both picturesque and easily accessible by car, or at a slower pace, by bicycle along the quiet back lanes and 'chemin blancs'. The gite is just a stones throw from the rivers of La Brousse and La Dronne where you can rent canoes on several different stretches of the river, plus there is a 9-hole golf course at the nearby Manoir de Longeveau.

The friendly little village of St Severin is just a couple of minutes away by car and has all local amenities you might need, including a bar, two restaurants, a boulangerie, hairdresser, chemist and bank - and a useful Spar shop open until 7pm every day (Sundays am only). The stunning 'plus beaux village' of Aubeterre Sur Dronne, the jewel of southern Charente, is just 5 minutes by car and has a choice of numerous excellent cafe's and restaurants surrounding its tree-lined square. Tumbling down the hillside from the chateau, its cobbled back streets and interesting little artisan shops make it a pleasant place to stroll around and take in the atmosphere. Not to be missed is the awe-inspiring monolithic church of St Jean, hewn from solid rock in the 12th century and the largest subterranean church in Europe. Aubeterre's small Sunday morning market is well worth a visit, as is the river beach and cafe at the foot of the village, where the meadows meet the River Dronne.

Less than 20 minutes away is the bustling town of Riberac, whose Friday market is one of the best in the area, or in the opposite direction, the Chateau-topped town of Chalais has a busy Monday market. Both towns have large supermarkets plus numerous restaurants and pavement cafes, great for spending lazy afternoons soaking up the french atmosphere.

About 45 minutes away by car is the idyllic town of Brantome, just on the northern edge of the Dordogne. Often known as the 'Venice of the Dordogne' due to its position on a loop of the river, the town has a nice mix of medieval and renaissance architecture including the magnificent benedictine abbey and the old stone bridge, weir and chocolate-box mill, all making for an unbelievably photogenic scene. The cobbled, pedestrian only back streets are filled with numerous shops and plenty of cafes and restaurants, many on the rivers edge. A trip to Brantome wouldnt be complete without visiting the picturesque medieval village of St Jean de Cole, just 10 minutes further east. Another of France's 'plus beaux villages', it's a magical, picture-postcard pretty place steeped in history, with a superb chateau, a unique church and half timbered houses surrounding its leafy central square, plus a beautiful stretch of river with its cobbled, hump-backed bridge dating from the middle ages - you really will feel like you have travelled back in time. Returning from Brantome, you'll have time to stop for a glass of wine in one the several cafes dotted around the charming village of Bordeilles. Dominated by the imposing 'Chateau de Bourdeilles' overlooking the river crossed by an ancient stone bridge and old mill - again, it's another breathtakingly beautiful scene well worth lingering over.

Less than an hour to the south east lies the lovely old town of Perigueux, the capital of the Dordogne. Part medieval, part roman, it is dominated by the 12th century Saint Front Cathedral, said to have been the inspiration for the design of the Sacre Coeur in Paris's Montmarte. Here, you'll discover modern shopping areas alongside the cobbled, pedestrian only back streets of the old town. Every corner you turn you'll be rewarded with another shaded square set out with tables and chairs full of chatting lunchtime customers, or one of the many chocolatiers luring you in with their sumptuous wares, or the lively hustle and bustle of the Saturday street market. Or heading north, just 45 minutes from Les Cimes des Arbres is the historic town of Angouleme, standing on a rocky promontory overlooking the Charente River. Angouleme is full of large wide open boulevards which stand above the original ramparts that protected the town, of which there are more than two kilometres remaining intact. Every September, Angouleme's roads becomes race tracks as vintage cars from far and wide come to take part in its famous 'Circuit de Remparts' classic car race.

Drive an hour south west through the rolling vineyards of the world famous bordeaux wine area and you'll discover the world heritage site of Saint Emillion, a charming medieval town set on a hill, world famous for its fine wines. Saint-Emilion is entered by way of one of the seven gates that are part of the original medieval fortifications, and inside the walls you will discover steep narrow streets with beautiful buildings and several open squares full of shops, restaurants and wine 'caves', each more attractive than the one before! Carry on just another half an hour south west and you'll find yourself in Bordeaux, one of France's most exciting, vibrant and dynamic cities. Half the city (18 sq km) is Unesco-listed, making it the largest urban World Heritage site. With its pedestrianised boulevards and chic boutiques, restored neoclassical architecture, barista-run coffee shops, exceptional dining scene and more fine wine than you could ever possibly drink, you'll be hard pressed to fit it all in on just one visit.

Directly west, about an hours drive, is the beautiful Gironde Estuary, formed by the confluence of the rivers Dordogne and Garonne. An exceptional natural enviroment, its also home to three more Unesco World Heritage sites, the Blaye Citadal, Fort Pâté and Fort Médoc, plus the charming coastal 'plus beaux village' of Talmont sur Gironde, famous for its tiny cobbled streets full of Hollyhocks.

Restaurants, food & wine

The Charente is a food lovers paradise, with a restaurant on every corner and delicious food to suit every taste and pocket. From simple french workers cafés serving their excellent value 'menu de jour' (3 or more set courses from as little as €12-13 per person - including wine!) to sumptuous fine dining where every course is a mini work of art. There are numerous places to eat within easy driving distance of Les Cimes des Arbres, the closest just 2km or a 20 minute walk away along quiet lanes - or pretty Aubeterre, just a 5 minute drive away, has at least 10 superb restaurants to choose from. We are happy to offer you our recommendations or you can browse our choices in our comprehensive gite guide book.

Naturally, this being France, wine is reasonably priced and plentiful whether you buy from the supermarket or visit a local 'cave'. We’re right on the edge of the Cognac grape growing region so you’ll see lots of this smooth double distilled brandy for sale around here. You’ll also see the local tipple ‘Pineau des Charente’ everywhere. Pineau is a fortified wine, made from fermented grape must and Cognac and comes in red or white - there are plenty of local producers that you can visit to try out their wares.

The Charente is definitely duck country. There’s the famous and mouthwatering ‘foie gras’, plus ‘Confit de Canard, slow cooked duck preserved in fat - delicious! ‘Magret de Canard’ is duck breast and you’ll usually be asked how you want it cooked, then there’s ‘Rillettes’, basically confited duck made into a sort of course paté. And lastly, there’s the fabulous ‘Gesiers’ or duck gizzards, give them a go - they’re definitely one of our favourites. And of course, cheese of all kinds and shapes - the Poitou-Charentes region produces two thirds of France’s goats cheese so you’ll see a lot of it for sale as well as on menus.

Activities

Les Cimes des Arbres is the last property on a rural no-through road which continues on to a green lane and offers lovely walks around the beautiful charente countryside straight from your door. There are numerous opportunities to cycle along the quiet back lanes and 'chemin blancs' all around the gite and there are over 1000 km of marked mountain bike trails in the Charente, varying from 6 km to 50 km in length and through a variety of difficulty levels making them suitable for everyone from beginners up to the experienced off road cyclist. The gite is just a stones throw away from the beautiful river Dronne, where you can take a canoe along the peaceful waterways. Almost all stretches of the river are covered by one or more canoe hire companies, and the price of hire includes driving or collecting you from up or down the river in a mini-bus - so you always end up back at your car! The Southern Charente is well-known for its river beaches and lakes, which are clean and well looked after with all amenities - there are three within 20 minutes drive of the gite including Le Grand Etang de La Jemaye, a large lake and nature reserve set amidst 210 hectares of unspoilt forest, with a lakeside beach, bars, restaurants, toilets, fishing, canoeing and miles of marked walks. Golf enthusiasts will love the 9-hole golf course at the nearby Manoir de Longeveau, just a 3 minute drive away. Within a 90 minute drive, there are at least 16 glorious chateaux open to the public for you to visit plus many more private ones dotted about the countryside to photograph or just admire. And of course France is famous for its vibrant markets and almost every town and the larger villages has one at least once a week - we are lucky here to have one of the best and largest in the region on our doorstep, in Riberac, on Friday mornings throughout the year.

    Further remarks

The gite is attached to our house at one end but on a lower level. You will have access to the whole of the property and grounds except for our private house and the upper terrace, which is gated off. We are situated at the end of a no-through road, so there is virtually no passing traffic. We will be available for any help you might need throughout your stay and are happy to recommend restaurants or places of interest etc. should you need it, but of course, endeavour to respect your privacy at all times. We have a cat and a small dog on premises but both are friendly and the dog does not have access to your private areas.. We do live in a rural area and would not recommend booking our gite without the use of a car. The gite is strictly non-smoking in all areas and is not suitable for anyone under 21 or with babies or pets. We are sorry but Les Cimes des Arbres is for two guests only and we do not allow extra guests or visitors in the gite, pool or outside areas. We regret that, due to the different levels and access, the gite is not suitable for wheelchair users.
