The house

  • Completely quiet natural area

A converted 19th century stone barn in the Perigord Vert region of Nouvelle Aquitaine in the Dordogne. Come see where stage 8 of this year’s Tour de France was held. Within a nature park, with a jacuzzi, sauna, gym and large garden, near the village of Abjat-sur-Bandiat.
La Roderie is a comfortable rural dwelling on two floors with a sauna and gym, overlooking a large landscaped garden with a lake. It is two kilometres from a village with a bar.
The house opens onto a private walled courtyard complete with a hot tub and outdoor dining furniture for four guests. Adjacent to the house is a large landscaped garden with a private lake. Children must be supervised. For adults, there is a choice of a mountain or a road bike and there are also two children's bikes.
The entry room is perfect for a sunny breakfast, morning or afternoon tea/coffee or evening aperitif. The sunroom connects to a spacious open-plan living and dining room served by a fully equipped kitchen.
A comfortable sofa suite surrounds a coffee table and fireplace, where guests can relax and listen to music or watch DVDs on the large television. A study, bathroom, utility room and garage housing play equipment for children complete the ground floor. Upstairs are the three large bedrooms, all of which have wardrobes and windows with views over the garden.
The first and second bedrooms have queen sized beds. The third can be configured either with a pair of twin beds or a queen size bed. There is also a snug with a double sofa bed and a television. Also upstairs is a second bathroom and a gym, featuring a pully weights machine, a sit-up bench, and the sauna. The gym and sauna are on a mezzanine level above the garage.

We stayed in La Roderie for three weeks and had a wonderful time. The house stays surprisingly cool, the garden is beautiful. Nice walks, various restaurants and attractive villages are nearby. We enjoyed the jacuzzi and the sauna. We will certainly consider this gite for future holidays and recommend it for those who appreciate the lovely surrounding in this not too touristic area

We spent two weeks in this very comfortable house. Everything is there in the house for a comfortable stay. Like the extra kitchen with second fridge and washing machine, the two bathrooms and three large sleeping rooms. Supermarkets on 10m, de bourlangerie is a three minute drive to Abjat. My children enjoyed a couple of times the jacuzzi in de garden. We can recommend this house with its large and private garden!

We were a group of 6 and spent a week at La Roderie. Contact with Robyn over email was efficient and very timely, considering we made a last-minute booking. The house itself is located in the tiny hamlet of La Roderie, a handful of houses in the middle of forests and fields. The house is secluded, with a lovely private courtyard with plenty of shade and green, featuring a large table, gas barbecue and jacuzzi. We spent every evening out here. The garden itself which we hadn't seen any photos of exceeded our expectations! There is a large lawn again with plenty of shade at all hours of the day, featuring a set with swings, another table, and two comfortable reclining deck chairs. The whole area has been rather dry the last few years, and as such streams and lakes are not all full or flowing. Thelittle private lake is muddy and not suitable for swimming, although there are likely still fish to catch and the view it offers is very pleasant.
The house is large, clean, well built and stays wonderfully cool in the heat of day. The only drawback is that the indoor area can be a little dark on cloudy days. The lighting inside is however more than adequate. The kitchen is well equipped with a gas stove, two large fridges and a freezer compartment and even had little extras we hadn't expected such as aluminium foil, cling wrap and a small collection of spices. The seating area includes comfortable sofa space for 6. The three rooms upstairs were basic but large enough, clean and included plenty of cupboard space. There are two comfortable large bathrooms with a shower and toilet each, as well as a bathtub upstairs. There is another small comfy seating area upstairs ideal for reading, and leads on to the mezzanine above the garage with a sauna, gym equipment and some weights, which was a nice plus! The garage had a nice bike, two fishing rods and other assorted outdoors and maintenance equipment.
We had quite hot weather and enjoyed swimming at the St. Estephe Etang which is less than 10 minutes away by car. It has a lovely beach area, lots of grass and clean water and is completely free.
Brantome is a beautiful town 30 minutes away and is definitely worth a visit. The surrounding area is very quiet and peaceful and features plenty of beautiful walking trails. If you intend to see lots of villages and towns, especially the more famous ones of the Dordogne, be aware the roads are small and windy and many of the well-known towns are still a good 1-2 hours away by car. If you come for the peace and quiet, walking trails and the occasional village visit in the immediate neighbourhood however then La Roderie will suit you perfectly. We would highly recommend it and would love to come again in future. Overall, a great value place for a holiday where you are guaranteed to relax completely!

Restaurants, food & wine

La Roderie is two kilometres from Abjat-sur-Bandiat, a village with bars/restaurants, creperie and baker. Other local restaurants range from auberges serving homegrown local produce to restaurants renowned for their haute cuisine.
La Roderie is situated in the Perigord-Limousin nature park, an area of almost two thousand square kilometres with a great variety of landscapes, trees, flowers, and wildlife. Warm from March through October, the region has many beautifully scenic roads and pathways to explore on foot or bicycle.

Also within easy reach are the picturesque abbey town of Brantôme on the Dronne river, where visitors can rent canoes. Day trips can also be made to Bordeaux, the capital of France's wine industry, whose 18th century centre is particularly impressive. The town of Cognac is the location of the Remy Martin, Martell, and Hennessy brandy distilleries, all of which welcome visitors to take tours and sample the product. Limoges is traditionally the centre of porcelain making in France and is rich in medieval history.
