The house

  • Quiet, rural area

Le Pompon d'Or is a luxury accommodation for 2 people to enjoy your holidays in peace, located in the picturesque village of Saint Pompon in the Périgord Noir, Dordogne department .
The 16th-century house has been patiently restored by owners Carine and Norbert Koreman and is located on the outskirts of the village. The charm of this "périgourdine" was completely preserved, but it was equipped with all comforts. A large part of the house has been reserved for a completely autonomous luxury holiday home.
The ground floor, with its own entrance, comprises a large bathroom with shower, whirlpool bath and 2 washbasins, a separate toilet, a sitting area and a storage room. The staircase leads to the very spacious, cosy lounge/bedroom with fireplace and a monumental beamed ceiling. This room overlooks part of the village and the rolling green landscape. Adjacent is the large kitchen, equipped with all comforts, kitchen appliances and materials. The kitchen opens onto a private terrace, the large garden with heated swimming pool without chlorine (heated from 1 June), cosy seating areas, vegetable garden, flower garden, parking and private forest with petanque court. On arrival, you can immediately start enjoying yourself because the bed is already made, bathrobes are ready and a bottle of wine is waiting for you. There are no charges for bed linen, towels, beach towels or final cleaning.

The book "Greetings from the Périgord", written by us and waiting for you on arrival, shows in text and pictures much of our village of Saint-Pompon and the Périgord.
Saint-Pompon is a village south of Sarlat, in the most beautiful protected natural area in the world. A good part of the village consists of monuments: the 12th-century church, the feudal castle, the streets between the romantic stone houses and, very special, the mansard above the village gate, from which pitch was poured to robbers in days gone by. Saint-Pompon's history began as early as the Neanderthals, as two local caves prove. The ancient Romans had a manifest presence; the village was a crossroads of Roman roads, most of which still exist. The most beautiful one leads past a Gallic king's tomb. In the Middle Ages, the village was a stopping point for pilgrims on their way to Saint Jacques de Compostella, many coquille ornaments in the houses testify to this. The Hundred Years' War between the French and English left many traces. From the Middle Ages, Saint-Pompon was considered an important market town; there were even separate markets for pigs, donkeys and geese. There were more than a dozen cabarets, places where you could eat and drink before heading to the hayloft in questionable company. It's all history, the village centre has only about 40 inhabitants today. But still many amenities are present, including a bakery, post office, pharmacy, farm shop, supermarket, a restaurant and a modest weekly market on Friday mornings.
On all Saturday evenings in July and August, the Marché Gourmand is held, an event not to be missed. Dozens of natives with their vans, tents and stalls then treat the public (for a fee) to food and drink ranging from an entrecôte frites to fried foie gras, from a truffle omelette to sausages and hams, from mussels to oysters. It usually comes with live music. You can sit at long tables with benches. Please do bring your own plates, cutlery and glasses. The wine costs almost nothing there.
At the end of July, the village hosts a very reputable large flea market.
Nearby, several medieval towns are well worth visiting, such as Sarlat, Belvès, Monpazier, Domme, La Roque-Gageac, Beynac, Villefranche du Périgord, Gourdon, Beaumont, Rocamadour, ... An hour away are Bergerac, Périgueux and Cahors. There are no big cities, Bordeaux, Toulouse and Limoges are all 200 kilometres away. Most towns hold interesting weekly markets where you will find mainly small producers from the region.
Also nearby are world-famous sites from prehistoric times, such as the caves of Lascaux and Les Eyezies. Several castles can be visited, such as Richard Lionheart's castle in Beynac, Castelnaud's eagle's nest opposite and Josephine Baker's Château Les Milandes. There are also several theme parks and an aquarium.
You won't find mass tourism, only a few spots right on the Dordogne River, where you can canoe or sunbathe on numerous beaches, can get crowded in summer.

Restaurants, food & wine

The Périgord is famous for its foie gras, confit de canard, walnuts, chestnuts and mushrooms such as truffles, cèpes, trompettes de la mort, morels and chanterelles. It is teeming with authentic recipes, with tourain, pommes Sarladaises and tarte aux noix being a must for every gastronome. Our region is surrounded by vineyards worth visiting: Cahors, Bergerac, Monbazillac, Pécharmant,, ... Numerous restaurants offer all the regional delights, often at exceptionally low prices. For example, enter an authentic regional bar-restaurant around noon. You will then get a sumptuous lunch, often including wine, for around twenty euros! Even the Michelin-starred restaurants are fashionably priced.

Activities

Saint Pompon is a perfect base for many activities. The large region around Saint-Pompon is a classified nature reserve. However, this does not mean that nature is surrounded by prohibition signs and barbed wire; on the contrary, you can wander freely almost everywhere. Numerous hiking trails have been marked out, leading you through the eternal forests, hills and valleys, often with sudden views.
On the way, you will hardly meet any people, at most a few small hamlets.
For cyclists, the area is a mecca. This applies both to those who want to keep it quiet and to those who enjoy top-class sport. It is not without reason that the French national championships VTT (mountain bike) are often held in Saint-Pompon. Road cyclists will be in for a treat, with slopes of up to 25%. The longest descent (or climb) within the municipal boundaries measures 9 kilometres.
On the Dordogne (16 km) you can canoe, kayak and fish.
There are also a few companies specialising in ballooning.
At 12 kilometres from Saint Pompon is an 18-hole golf course.
Those who love the ancient world will feel completely at ease here. Within our municipality's borders, you will find everything, such as a medieval hospital (unfortunately in a dilapidated state), a medieval court (almost impossible to find in the woods and scrubland), a Gallic king's tomb, Gallic constructions and Roman roads, a cave dwelling... If you wish, we can take you on a short excursion.
In the neighbourhood, several medieval towns are worth visiting, like Sarlat, Belvès, Monpazier, Domme, La Roque-Gageac, Villefranche du Périgord, Gourdon, Beaumont, Rocamadour... At an hour's distance are Bergerac, Périgueux and Cahors. There are no large cities, Bordeaux, Toulouse and Limoges are all at 200 kilometres. In most fortified towns there are interesting weekly markets where you can find small regional products. We are happy to inform you further.
The mood will already be set after reading the book "Greetings from the Périgord" written by Norbert Koreman, which will be waiting for you on arrival. This luxury book shows in text and image much of Saint-Pompon, its peculiarities and its inhabitants.

Further remarks

The official name of the village is Saint Pompon. However, it is often written as Saint Pompont (+t) (due to a clerical error in days gone by). Please take this into account when entering the GPS.
