Restaurants, food & wine

The cuisine of the Périgord offers all kinds of traditional dishes that are made with products that grow here. The regional products are: duck dishes (confit and magret de canard), omelettes (with, among other things, porcini mushrooms and truffles) and salads with walnut oil. Sweet chestnuts are used into countless of regional dishes. You can enjoy the culinary specialties in a restaurant within walking distance.

Truffles, the black gold
In Sorges there is a truffle museum. After a visit to the museum you can go for a walk along the "truffières" and search for truffles.
La Truffe noir and Périgord, at Péchalifour in Saint Cyprien, lets visitors find truffles out in the wilderness ! Edouard tells the story of the truffle, the connection between the plants, trees and mushrooms, between the sun and water, but also stories of animals, pigs, and dogs.

Nuts
The Ecomusée de la Noix in Castelnaud tells the history of walnuts, the labour involved, cultivation and harvesting.

Wine
* Musée du Vin, de la Batellerie and de la Tonnellerie in Bergerac give an explanation about barrel manufacturing for the wines from the region, the transport and about the history of wine growing.
* Wine route from Villefranche-du-Périgord, where you will find Château Lamartine in Sorutac along the way.

Everywhere in the Périgord markets are held. The specialty markets, held in i.a. Périgueux and Sarlat, for example, offer you the opportunity to taste regional products.

Activities

In the village you can you can see the work of the châtaignier (person who works with chestnuts) and you will be informed about chestnuts and mushrooms that grow in chestnut forests.
Châtaigne du Périgord has an organic chestnut orchard of more than 7 ha large on domaine de Rapatel, and the owners are happy to tell you about this "bread-tree". In the shop you can discover the delicacies made from the Camille chestnut. In autumn there is a festival for the chestnut and porcini mushroom in Villefranche-du-Périgord. On summer evenings a 'repas' (meals on the market square) is frequently organised in the village where you can join in after paying an entrance fee.

The Dordogne has something for every one:
* a thousand castles spread over 575 towns.
* a trip from prehistoric times to Medieval cities, castles, bastides and churches, along the rivers and on the lakes.
* visit parks and gardens
* gastronomic highlights or simply good food.
* canoeing or kayaking, horse riding, fishing, cycling, walking, golf, hot air balloon rides or birds of prey shows.
* every village has its own festival with music, fireworks, tournaments which are open to everyone.
* enjoying nature, where you will be surprised by the wild animals: deer, rabbits, but also foxes and badgers. But you can also visit unique gardens.

Cycling paradise
The Dordogne is the French cycling paradise. It is wonderful to pedal along a wide meandering river with imposing limestone cliffs, medieval fortresses, forests and valleys. The rural roads are among the quietest in France. VillaFranche offers you a week with five bike tours. But of course you can also put together your own route using the existing cycling maps in the holiday home.

Horse riding
Ferme équestre in Belves will welcome you in beautiful surroundings and take you on guided trips of an hour or longer.

Walking
From "Le Bourg" (the village square) different routes have been set out over different distances. VillaFranche offers various walking routes in the Land of the Chestnuts.

Enjoy swimming in the public swimming pool, with paddling pool, is within walking distance of the holiday home. The swimming pool is open from June to September, from 12.00 - 19.00.
The fish pond is located in front of the swimming pool. You must buy your fishing card at the Tabac or VVV.
