The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some traffic

Le Pigeonnier is set on the property of La Bastide Portoly, a traditional farmhouse. In the village Penne d'Agenais it is also called "Le petit château". The property consists of the main house with the large Gite "Les Deux Cèdres" below, a pigeon tower in which the Gite "Le Pigeonnier" is located and a former plum-drying shop where the chambre d'hôte "Pruneaux" is located. You will find over 250 years of history from the many generations who have lived here. This stone country house is situated on a hill with magnificent views of the picturesque medieval town of Penne d'Agenais with its silver domed basilica.
On the property surrounding the house are beautiful ancient (cedar) trees. The estate of 5.5 hectares consists in part of forest, where you can make lovely walks and with a little luck you might spot a roe deer or badger. Also the owl, a welcome guest, can be seen and heard every now and then at night.
A considerable part of the estate consists of meadows with a diversity of wild plants and rare orchids, with cosy corners everywhere to sit down and enjoy the natural setting. Due to its unique location, a beautiful wide view of the rolling hills with its plum orchards, sunflower fields and vineyards is guaranteed. Restful serenety!
This cosy holiday home "Le Pigeonnier" is situated in the old pigeon tower, separate from the main house. The authentic front door gives entrance to the living and kitchen area. The living room has a rustic fireplace with wood stove and cosy seating. The original wall cupboards, various old elements and a spectacular view out of the window provide the real French feeling. Imagine having breakfast at the dining table with the window as a living painting... C'est la vie en France!
The kitchen is equipped with a 4-burner induction hob, an oven and a fridge. There is also a Nespresso coffee machine, kettle and toaster. On the ground floor there is a bathroom with shower, sink and toilet. The bedroom has a double four poster bed and a large wardrobe. Via a staircase you reach the old pigeon tower. Here is another bedroom with a double bed. The tower has been renovated but the old elements such as the original pigeon holes have been preserved. The terrace at the front of the building offers great privacy with fantastic views of the medieval village of Penne d'Agenais. On the other side there is a beautiful panorama towards the woods. Excellent for spotting deer, wild boar and badgers in the evening sun.
You can park your car on site.

Restaurants, food & wine

Upon request, we are happy to prepare a 3-course dinner for our guests. We serve French dishes as much as possible and use local products. Vegetarian is of course also possible.
If you want to enjoy culinary pleasures in a restaurant, then you are in the right place in Lot-et-Garonne. Here, they understand the art of good food. There is an extensive wine production (Buzet, Côtes-de-Duras, Côtes-du-Marmandais, Brulhois). Moreover, the delicious Cahors, Bordeaux and Saint Emilion wines are close by. Something for everyone!
The locals are justifiably proud of their culinary products. Foie gras, confit de canard, asparagus, strawberries, plums from Agen, tomatoes from Marmande or, more recently, hazelnuts and kiwis. These products are sold at the attractive markets in the surrounding villages. In July and August, there are often evening markets where you can enjoy the local food and wine, sitting at long tables on the village square, with music and entertainment. A very nice way to experience the atmosphere of village life and the French people.
