The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

Detached cottage with magnificent panoramic views over the Orb and Jaur valleys, at the edge of the small, picturesque village of Saint-Martin-de-l'Arçon. Ideal for nature lovers, hikers and tranquility seekers. The four terraces (two next to and two in front of the house) and the small garden with a cherry tree provide plenty of privacy.
Small living room with large original fireplace, original stone floors, open woodburner and doors opening onto the terraces in front of the house. Modern kitchen with electric cooker, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, oven, microwave, breadmaker. Bathroom with shower, WC, washing machine. From the living room the stone stairs bring you to the upper floor with the two bedrooms, one double and one with two single beds. A foldaway bed is also available. There is a small TV/DVD player (no antenna or dish, so just for DVDs) and iPod dock with speakers (discman or MP3 player can also be connected). Heating in spring and fall through open wood stove and electric radiators.
Location of the terraces in front of the house south-southwest, here you catch plenty of sun, moon and stars. The main terrace is sufficiently shaded by our ash tree ("Le Frêne"). Patio furniture, barbecue.

You reach the house via narrow alleys (partly stairs), and so you cannot reach the front door by car: the last 100 meters you have to walk. But this also means: no car traffic (or any traffic whatsoever) near the house. Magnificent panoramic views towards the south and west across the valleys of the Orb and Jaur. Saint-Martin lies at the southern flank of the Caroux, say the most southern foothills of the Massif Central. This location protects the village against the mistral, the icy northern wind that can ravage for days in other parts of the Languedoc. The region is part of the Parc Naturel Régional de Haut-Languedoc, which means among other things: no roads, no industry, virtually no stray light (starry skies!), mountain sheep, wild boar...

A lovely house in an amazing setting!
The house is fully equipped and beautifully renovated, clean, and with breathtaking views over the valley.
Peter was the perfect host -friendly, providing correct information and making the renting process smooth and professional.

There are wonderful walks in the region, and several of them starts in the village. The Gorge d'Héric is just a 30 lovely minute walk away if you feel like a morning swim in crystal clear water.
We would love to come back....-soon!

Activities

Saint-Martin is a known base for walkers. The village is a starting point for several trails, one of which leads along the famous Gorge d'Heric, which is also a favourite place for climbing. The river Orb is excellent for swimming and canoeing. The sea is about one hour away.
Worth a visit (max. 1 hour drive) are: Lamalou-les-Bains (old spa), Cirque de Mourèze, Lac du Salagou (swimming, windsurfing), Olargues (medieval centre, Pont de Diable), Rocquebrun (beautifully located on the Orb, pebble beach, canoe rental, Mediterranean garden), Saint-Chinian (wine centre), Minerve, Béziers (nearest "big" city with walking and shopping centre). Near Béziers is the Canal du Midi, one of the world's oldest industrial sites on the UNESCO list.
