The house
The charming gite for 5 people (and a baby) consists of a detached three-bedroom house dating from probably the 18th century with its own enclosed garden with lots of privacy, located next to the 'Chateau de Audes'. Originally a storage shed for fruit, the gite was converted into a residence in the 1970s by order of the then owner, a notary.
On the ground floor are a large living room, the kitchen, a spacious bright conservatory, a hallway, the bathroom, a toilet, a single bedroom (bed 90x200cm) and a dressing room. The living room has a dining area, a sitting area with television, a tuned (upright) piano and a built-in fireplace with glass door.
The bathroom has a spacious walk-in shower and two sinks. The kitchen is equipped with a 4-burner induction hob, fridge with freezer drawers, oven, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, coffee machine and kettle. The conservatory overlooks the intimate, private (front) garden.
The open staircase in the living room leads to the first floor with a spacious landing, a large bedroom for 2 persons and a smaller bedroom for 2 persons. Both bedrooms have a velux skylight allowing plenty of light in and low built-in wardrobes. The double beds are 180x200cm. On request, the beds can be separated into individual single beds (90x200cm). The master bedroom also has a cot.
On cold evenings, the fireplace can be lit in the living room. The fireplace is located where the bread oven used to be. A basket of firewood is offered to you in autumn and winter season.
The living room opens onto the sunny back garden. In summer, roses bloom here in abundance. At the side of the house is a large dining table with chairs, parasol and barbecue. The garden of approx. 500m2 is fully enclosed and runs around the house. The garden offers a place to sit in peace for every season. The lockable double garage offers space for two cars, bikes, motorbikes etc.. Parking is also on private land in front of the garages.
Books are available in several languages (English, French, Dutch) and games for children. Children can play safely outside as the garden is completely fenced. The place is characterised by quiet surroundings without being remote.
The gite has wifi, internet is via a fibre optic connection.
Smoking is not allowed in the gite. Dogs are welcome by arrangement.

The completely detached gite is in the middle of a small village, Audes, in the Allier countryside. The village lies halfway between the Forêt de Tronçais and the city of Montluçon where the area is characterised by its vast forests and gently rolling hills. The meadows are surrounded by the hawthorn hedges typical of the area, where Charolais cows graze peacefully.
Audes has a genuine local museum, the Musée du Canal de Berry, where you can learn about the history of the region and its canal. Moreover, you can hire pedal boats or take a trip on the canal in whisper boats. Along the canal runs a voie verte, a cycling and walking route along the old towpath. Next to the museum is 'L'Auberge de Magnette' with a large terrace where you can eat or simply have a drink.

Restaurants, food & wine
Local produce such as honey, vegetables, fruit, wine, meat (including bison), cheese, eggs are available in the nearby villages of La Chapelaude (honey shop, local market) and Vallon-en-Sully (local produce shop, local market) a 5-minute drive away.
For wine lovers, several wine regions are accessible within an hour's drive, for example to the east the AOC Saint Pourçain wine region with red, white and rosé wines and an area of 640 hectares. This is one of the oldest wine regions in France. To the west, AOC Châteaumeillant is half an hour's drive away. To the north, located along the Cher, are AOC Quincy and AOC Reuilly (recommended). A little further north, an hour and fifteen minutes away, is AOC Menetou-Salon and an hour and thirty minutes away is AOC Sancerre.
Many restaurants can be found in the region, as well as the 1-Michelin-star restaurant "La Chapelle" in the Château Saint Jean in Montlucon. Their bistro "Saint Jean", by the way, is equally recommended.
Activities
Right from the gîte, you can enjoy plenty of hiking, mountain biking and cycling. You will be surprised again and again by beautiful vistas and panoramas. There is a golf course 5 km from the gite and the municipality of Audes has a fishing pond.
Half an hour away is the ancient oak forest 'Forêt de Tronçais'. This forest covers almost 11,000 hectares and is one of the largest and oldest oak forests in Europe. Twenty-six oaks from this forest were used to reconstruct the spire of the burned Notre-Dame de Paris. You can enjoy hiking and mountain bike tours. There are beautiful lakes, with guarded sandy beaches where you can swim and fish.
Near the village of Sidiailles (30 min), hidden in the hills, there is a beautiful large reservoir, where you can enjoy a supervised swim. But also: canoeing, pedalos and surfing. In 2015, a large tree-climbing park was built here with various routes for all ages. There are also hiking trails, some with zip lines, which let you whiz across the lake to the other side for the rest of the walk. A walk around the lake is also possible, a beautiful hike of about 7 hours.

Further remarks
The town of Montluçon, 15 km away, has a beautiful medieval centre with castle, the MuPop museum (museum of popular music) and park. All major supermarkets (Aldi, Lidl, Carrefour, Auchan, Leclerc) as well as many small shops can be found there. In the summer months, there are weekend brocantes all over the area.
Furthermore, Moulins, Vichy, Bourges Clermont-Ferrand are all within an hour's drive for those who fancy a day trip to a bigger city. Or one can visit the Puy-de-Dome; the volcano region. The summit of the Puy de Dôme can be visited by train or, for the sporty, by foot. The views over the volcano chain are fantastic.
