The house
La grande maison was once a large stable and has been converted into a spacious, comfortable house.
You enter into a hall with stairs to the first floor and a toilet.
On the ground floor is the living-dining room with French doors to the garden. The dining area is connected, also through French doors, to the large, well-equipped kitchen.
On the first floor is an open space with pool table, bordered by 3 bedrooms (2 of which have their own washbasins) and a bathroom with bathtub, separate shower, washbasin, wc and bidet.
On the second floor is another double bedroom with small private bathroom with shower, washbasin and wc.
The house is heated by an easy-to-fire wood-burning stove, wood is in stock. The very thick walls retain the heat in winter and keep the house cool in summer. The garden with terrace faces south and has shade under a large walnut tree.

Our house is located in the French Ardennes, or more precisely in the Gaume, a region overlapping the Belgian-French border, a sparsely populated area bordered by the Ardennes, Lorraine and Meuse. The landscape is varied, hilly, with meadows and arable land fringed by groves and larger forests, crossed by rivers, streams and small streams.
There are no shops in the village itself; the baker comes by honking daily. At 3.5 km is a warm bakery and grocery shop, at 15-20 km are many shops and large supermarkets.
At 23.00 in the village, the street lights go out, it is often pitch-dark and on a clear day you can enjoy a beautiful starry sky.

Heerlijk ruim, sfeervol en zeer compleet huis. Er is zeer goed nagedacht wat er nodig is om je je hier thuis te laten voelen. Dat is gelukt.
Omdat we hier in december verbleven, dachten we dat het wat koud zou zijn in huis, maar de kachel verwarmt meer dan goed.

Een heerlijk huis om ook bij minder weer een echt vakantiegevoel te ervaren. Het huis is heel ruim en heel compleet. Met mogelijkheid tot een pool- en sjoelcompetitie ;-).

Een mooi liggend dorp in een zeer mooie streek. Een groot huis met alles erop en eraan. Zeer uitgebreide keuken , alles is aanwezig om te koken en te bakken. Voorraden zijn er ook, erg handig. Grote tuin om in te zitten met parasol, luie tuinstoelen zag ik niet. Goede banken en bedden.
Houdt er rekening mee dat het een dorp is waar vee wordt gehouden. Er waren veel vliegen, het was beter ramen en deuren dicht te houden. Bij aankomst nogal wat dode vliegen op de vensterbanken in de slaapkamers. Stapels zwaluwenpoep op de vensterbanken aan de buitenzijde. Mijn man had er geen last van. Ik wel.

There are several restaurants in the area and nearby is Orval Abbey, famous for its beer and cheese production.
Activities
The French Ardennes, only about 350 km from Utrecht, is a sparsely populated, hilly area with varied nature where you can enjoy hiking and cycling right from home, a little further away also swimming, canoeing and fishing. Within a radius of 30 km you will find e.g. the Abbey of Orval with beer and cheese production, the Hermitage of St. Walfroy with panoramic views, Ferthé with access to the Maginot Line, Avioth a small village with large basilique, Montmédy an old garrison town with citadel, Mouzon with cathedral and felt museum, Chassepierre on the Semois where an annual international street festival is held and Sedan with a large castle. There are also frequent broquantes in the immediate vicinity.

Further remarks
The garden faces south, so plenty of sun, with a possibility of retreating into the shade under the large walnut tree.
The house is heated by a large wood-burning stove (wood is provided). The beds are equipped with an electric blanket for cold days.
Sheets and towels are provided at €15 per person per week.
Every year in summer, there are 2 painting-drawing workshops supervised by an experienced teacher. For more information, please contact the landlord. Registration is in January.
