The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some traffic

Located in the Champagne Ardenne region, the Haute Marne department in North-East France 600 km from Utrecht in the village of Les Granges Huguet, holiday home La Gageure is an authentic converted farmhouse. The house is suitable for parties of up to 6 people with children from 6 years old.
At the front, the farmhouse has a large, cosy living kitchen (30 m²) with a wood-burning stove and is equipped with a SMEG six-burner gas cooker with oven and a fridge. The kitchen is very well equipped for hobby cooks. There is no dishwasher. There is a second large fridge in the shed. Behind the kitchen are the (well-stocked) library and garden room of 25-30 m² each, which are comfortably furnished. Upstairs are four large bedrooms with a double bed in each room and a single bed in two rooms as well. The single beds are 90 x 200 cm. The double beds are twice 160 x 200 (mattresses 2 x 80 cm wide) and twice 140 x 200. Woolen and synthetic single and double duvets (200 x 200) and pillows are plentiful. There are also hot water bottles and electric blankets. You should bring your own bed linen, towels and kitchen linen.
Of the bedrooms, three have a large south-facing window and nice views. The fourth room has a west-facing skylight. Upstairs there is also a toilet and a spacious bathroom with sink, separate shower and bathtub. There is an electric radiator in each room. Downstairs (in the barn) is a second bathroom. In the downstairs toilet there is an excellent washing machine. The house is comfortably furnished and offers more than enough room for 6 people. The hot water supply is designed accordingly.

There is a super table tennis table, a music system with good CD player and I-POD docking station and USB connection, as well as puzzles and all kinds of games such as scrabble and settlers. There is no TV, but there is an excellent wireless internet connection. There are many (walking) maps and extensive information on the area.
Next to the living area are two large barns over the depth of the house (15 metres).

The garden behind the house is about 2000 m² with old and young fruit trees and is partly lawned. Paths run through the tall grass to the bottom of the garden where an intimate area has been created for seclusion. The back garden enjoys sunshine all day. There is a large fire pit with a fixed barbecue. You can pick cherries in June and harvest plums (cherries and madeleines) in August. If you come in autumn, you can enjoy apples, pears and walnuts. And in September you will see the vintners of Coiffy Le Haut and its surroundings busy picking grapes and making wine.
For outdoor living, there are chairs and tables, stretchers, two hammocks, parasols and a speedy pool inflatable 1.85-metre pool. The south terrace on the side of the house and a pergola with terrace in the garden behind the house, offer you both sun and shade. The back garden faces west and offers a magnificent sunset behind the hills in the evening. The starry sky at night shows that light pollution is unknown in Haute Marne. The Milky Way is easily visible. At the front of the house, you can enjoy the first rays of the sun on a bench in front of the house in the morning. There is also a seat in the front garden.

Les Granges Huguet is a hamlet consisting of 22 houses. Our house, is located between the villages of Coiffy Le Haut and Coiffy Le Bas. It is one street built on a small ridge. Both in front and behind you overlook vineyards and have a wide view. Our French neighbour has more than 2000 sheep grazing in the meadows in front and behind the house.

Haute-Marne is located in the north-east of France and borders the departments of Meuse, Vosges, Haute-Saône, Côte-d'Or, Aube and Marne. The area is hilly (300-400 m high) and close to the Plateau of Langres where the Meuse river originates. The Haute Marne has not yet been discovered by the general public. This house and its surroundings are a fantastic location to unwind, come to yourself and enjoy peace, space and quiet.
In the 1980s, a few families restarted viniculture. Apart from that, it is mainly an agricultural area with lots of cows and sheep. The nearest larger village is Bourbonne les Bains, 9 km away. Here there are shops for all necessary groceries and restaurants. Bourbonne is a thermal village where many elderly people still come to take cures in the vitalising water. There are many small roads in the immediate vicinity of the house that invite you to explore the area by bike or on foot. You can walk from the house and there are walks in the area. A little further away runs the GR 7 route. The forests are light and airy, along the roads you will find many walnut trees and autumn colours the vineyards beautifully. In spring, the ground is covered with wood anemones and primroses. About 15 kilometres north of Bourbonne Les Bains is a natural pond (Lac de Morimond) where people swim in summer. Just behind Bourbonne, the Vosges Mountains begin to the east. To the south you drive into Burgundy. On the way to the house, the cities of Metz (the capital of the Lorraine region with a large cathedral and beautiful Centre Pompidou annex) and Nancy (the capital of the Meurthe et Moselle department, an art nouveau city) are worth a stop. A visit to the birthplace of Joan of Arc, in Domrémy is also interesting. Westwards, you enter Aube, an unknown, hilly and quiet region known for its champagne.

    Dankzij het verrassend lekkere weer ook genoten van de tuin; de cosmea bloeide nog volop, de rijpe druiven trokken een hoop vogels, insecten en deze kleine leukerd;
Als toetje zwaaide een grote groene specht ons gisterochtend vanaf de kweepeer uit!
Dank voor jullie heerlijke huis, we hebben genoten.

    Hartelijke groet,
    Machteld & Chris

Restaurants, food & wine

In the 1980s, a few families in Coiffy Le Haut restarted viniculture. There are two caves to visit close to the house where red, white and sparkling wines can be tasted. There are several restaurants in Bourbonne Les Bains and Montigny le Roi, as well as in Langres
Beaune, in the Côte-d'Or is an hour and 15 minutes' drive from the house. It is a gastronomic place with several starred restaurants and a nice market.
In Bourbonne les Bains there is a weekly small market and a monthly larger market.

Activities

Bourbonne Les Bains is a thermal village and especially in less warm months it is lovely to spend part of a day in the baths there. Between Les Granges Huguet and Bourbonne is the animal park De la Bannie where it is especially entertaining to feed the wild boars. Nearby in Guyonvelle is a climbing park for children and in Velles it is possible to go horse riding.
Langres is located on the Langres Plateau where several rivers originate, such as the Seine, the Marne, the Aube and the Meuse. Langres is a beautiful elevated, walled old fortified city. The city wall offers a nice walk with stunning views of the surroundings. Around Langres are four lakes where water sports are available.
Chatillon sur Saône is a beautiful historic village about 30 minutes' drive from Les Granges Huguet and is just in the Vosges. A historical film could easily be shot there.
Dijon is the capital of the Côte-d'Or department and the Burgundy region. Dijon is an hour and a half's drive south and well worth a visit. Beaune, even a little further south, is also well worth a visit to the Hospice and wine explorations.
Eastwards, you are close to the Vosges Mountains. The High Vosges Mountains are about an hour and a half/two hours away. Le Corbusier's church in Ronchamps is well worth a drive if you are interested in modern architecture. It is about 100 km to the east in the Haute Saône region.
