It is a fully restored hunting lodge on an ancient estate of currently 6 ha with castle, pigeonnier and castle park with special ancient trees. It gives exclusive access to the castle park and a large swimming pool, and is divided into two wings, each with two floors and its own front door. The East Wing
(App I) has three bedrooms, including one with balcony; the West Wing (App II) 2 bedrooms.
The hunting lodge is ideal for 6+4 people, but is uither equipped for 8+6 pp. It has been equipped with the faster 4G mobile internet since 2023.
2014 commemorated the start of World War I, "La Grande Guerre," The Great War 1914 - 1918. The hunting lodge is in the middle of the War Zone with numerous memorial sites. Verdun, the Stalingrad of WWI, is 46km away.

BOOKINGS FOR THE ENTIRE HUNTING LODGE DURING THOSE PERIODS IN PREVIOUS YEARS, WERE THEREFORE BEST MADE THE PREVIOUS YEAR OR IN SPRING.
THE HOUSE IS IDEAL FOR A HOLIDAY OF 2 BEFRIENDED FAMILIES OR PARENTS WITH THEIR SON/DAUGHTER + PARTNER AND (GRAND) CHILDREN, THANKS TO THE POSSIBILITY OF A "LIVING APART TOGETHER," BEING TOGETHER WHEN ONE WANTS FOR EATING OR PLAYING, SWIMMING, CYCLING, WALKING, EXCURSIONS; RETREATING TO ONE'S OWN DOMAIN WHEN ONE WANTS OR SEEKS A MOMENT OF REST.
Fireplaces, antique furniture and wall decorations from family property on the one hand; on the other hand all modern comfort and luxury, such as double glazing (also pleasant in summer, where the thick walls already keep the house relatively cool), extra insulation, electric wall heating, in each room independently adjustable, 3 bathrooms (bath, showers), 4 WCs, separate refrigerators, separate freezers, separate washing machines, separate dryers, dishwashers; TVs, Video and DVD equipment, telephone; garden furniture, deck chairs, barbecues; bicycles (5 for children aged 3 - 17 and 4 for adults), house and garden games; a small playground with PicNic table + benches, climbing tower, swings and slide 50 m away but within (possibly desirable toe) sight, etc..]
The East Wing (App I) gives exclusive access to an upper pool with telescopic canopy, inaugurated in 2011. This 10 x 5-metre pool is located in a spacious, secluded spot in the castle park 50 metres from the hunting lodge.
When renting the entire hunting lodge (West Wing and East Wing), guests of the West Wing also have access to this modern and, if necessary, covered swimming pool; period in principle May - September, but due to climate change in recent years already operational in April, and until 1 November.

There is so much to see here in the immediate very bucolic surroundings with vast farmlands and picturesque villages, and in cities such as Reims or Epernay and Nancy or Bar-Le-Duc; Chalons-en-Champagne and Verdun. while on walks in the surrounding woods one now easily encounters the big game, deer and boar, but also foxes and partridges. For lovers !
P.S. I was Saturday, 14 December 2013, at the official opening of a truly spectacular sports centre in Sainte Menehould (8 km from us). Even in New York, let alone In the Netherlands ever seen something so beautiful, including 3 swimming pools, a permanently heated outdoor one, a large indoor one and a very playful children's water paradise, with a bar from where the parents can oversee everything. Great during the Christmas period - water 31 degrees - especially for children around 10 years old, and for fitness enthusiasts (rarely seen so many torture tools together to burn off all the Christmas and New Year fat).

The hunting lodge is situated on a hill in the CHAMPAGNE region, 9 km from Sainte-Ménéhould, 35 km from Chalons-en- Champagne, 45 km from Verdun (with many war memories from 1914-1918), 80 km from Reims, 128 km from Nancy, 200 km from Paris and 450 km from The Hague, in the heart of the Argonne region.
It is part of a 6 ha estate with park, stables and other outbuildings, and the 16th/18th century hilltop castle of Villers-en-Argonne that belonged for three hundred years to the family of the famous German poet, biologist, explorer, and author of "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte," Adelbert von Chamisso.
It towers over the River Aisne, at the beginning of the village of Villers, which has about 250 inhabitants, with a baker's who visits every day and a dirt-cheap but excellent village restaurant nearby. It is embedded in a beautiful hilly landscape in the middle of the woods.
Spring and autumn are perhaps the most spectacular times of year. The mighty forests of the Argonne are at their most beautiful then. In autumn especially, the animal world, boar and deer, is much more visible - and audible - than usual: rutting season.
At the same time, the then (covered) swimming pool is already / still to be used despite the cool nights. The water was on 6 October a.p. 25 degrees and the air "indoors" 30 degrees celcius. In 2012 and 2013 it was used from April to the beginning of November (water then 20 degrees).

Een beetje weemoedig nemen wij afscheid van deze mooie plek.We hebben hier een heerlijke week doorgebracht, genoten van de omgeving en veel plezier gehad in het zwembad. Een heel fijn bad in een mooie tuin. Wij hebben een mooi feestje gevierd ter ere van het 55 jarige huwelijk van onze ouders en grootouders. Dankbaar en heel blij met deze lieve, prachtige mensen waarmee we deze week hebben doorgebracht.

Voor ons jaarlijks familietrapje zijn we altijd op zoek naar een gelegenheid waar we samen op vakantie kunnen gaan, maar toch onze eigen ruimtes hebben. En dat hebben we hier gevonden. Drie mooie ruime verblijven (Oostvleugel, Westvleugel, Loft), waar we samen konden zijn.
Heerlijk genieten van de mooie ruime tuin, voetballen, badmintonnen, luieren.Daarnaast hebben we natuurlijk ook de omgeving en de indrukwekkende historie ontdekt. Onze zoon heeft met veel interesse het boekje over de kledij van de soldaten in WO I doorgenomen, en een bezoek aan Verdun mocht natuurlijk niet ontbreken. Onze laatste dag hebben we gebruikt om de vakantie in stijl af te sluiten door een proeverij en rondleiding bij Bernard Longlas in Bassuet te boeken. Natuurlijk konden we daar niet vertrekken zonder een paar heerlijke champagnes voor thuis in te slaan.
Wat ook super was deze week was het bezoekje aan de geitenboerderij.. We mochten de stal bezoeken en de eigenaresse heeft ons met veel geduld geholpen aan een paar heerlijke kaasjes.
Met een voldaan en ontspannen gevoel keren we nu allemaal weer terug naar ons eigen huis in nederland. Bedankt voor alle goede service.

Onze vakantie is voorbij. We hebben genoten. De kids vooral van het zwembad. Wij van het niksen. Chalons was leuk. Het park fijn om in te struinen op een warme dag. Dank voor alles. Het huis is heerlijk. De gastvrijheid voelbaar.
Restaurants, food & wine
The CHAMPAGNE is known for its excellent food culture and good wines, and in the immediate surroundings there are also very nice restaurants where you can eat very well for surprisingly little money.
The Champagne route with vineyards, caves and champagne tasting starts in Bassuet, 35 km from the estate. Harvest time from mid August - beginning of September.
By the way, the baker comes every day with fresh bread, even on Sunday morning.
And why not try out the new TGV-Est by leaving from the heart of the Argonne forest for a day of strolling in
stroll through Paris and have dinner in Reims: 50 departures a day to the centre of Paris in 45 minutes from Reims: the distance between hunting lodge and Reims is also only 45 minutes by car.
Activities
Hiking, swimming, table tennis, horseback riding, cross-country cycling are the main outdoor pastimes on the estate.

"For us the highlight was cycling through the area. Map at hand, but it doesn't matter where you cycle to: everything is very beautiful. The bikes are good!
Tip for Mr. Landman to promote the lake to cycling enthusiasts and cyclists!" There are 9 bikes available, for all ages.
For horse lovers, it is a true paradise because of the beautiful water and woody surroundings and the varied landscape, hill and valley. You can bring your horse and stable it at the hunting lodge; there is also a riding school (horse/pony club) in Villers itself.
Birdwatchers can also enjoy themselves here. And in September, the belling of the stags in rut in the Argonne forest at the foot of the estate is a spectacular and fairy-tale like event, which people come to see from afar.
N.B. Exclusive access to the Castle Park, where the swimming pool is also located. Quite apart from that, the hunting lodge with its garden and orchard itself covers 3 hectares to explore and walk in - and for the free gathering of fresh cherries, plums, nuts, pears and apples, according to the season. A small playground with climbing tower, swings and slide is located aside but within sight of the house if desired; furthermore you will find living room games, books, children's videos, cricket and badminton. There are 5 children's bicycles for ages 3 - 17 years, and 2 adult bicycles.
The existing swimming pool was replaced mid last year on the same spacious spot by a luxurious, sunken pool of 5 x 10 metres; partly 120 cm, partly 180 cm deep (water level).
The canopy (15 long X 6.80 wide X 1.98/2.28 m high) can easily be slid together electrically (solar energy) during the summer months, so that the pool itself is completely in the open air. The pool can thus be used not only in July and August, but also in June and September and even in May and October.
Since the middle of last year, the renovation of the right wing of the 'grande ecurie' has also been completed with
- new beautiful hardwood horse stalls modelled on 18th century stalls on country estates like this one, but each with 12m2 of space, and a
- top quality (Cornilleau outdoor 55) table tennis set-up with accessories.
The following activities in the vicinity:
Hunting (deer and boar), fishing, swimming, hiking, mountain/cross country biking, horse riding, water sports, bird watching, tennis. Lac de Der (Europe's largest man-made lake with bird nature reserve) at 50 km.
An 18 hole golf course, the Chalons Champagne Golf Club at Courtisols, is less than 35 km away; and at 90 km, near Reims, the famous CHAMPIONSHIP GOLFCOURSE, Golf de Reims Champagne at Gueux(Championships).
For hunting enthusiasts: this is the only region in France (outside the Elsas), where you can hunt individually (with a guide), in June, July, August and September. (Collective) Drift hunts with dogs (approx. 30 people) are held from October to February.

Further remarks
The East wing is basically designed for 6, the West wing for 4 persons. However, in both living rooms there is a sofa, which can be converted into a very comfortable double bed in no time.
Access to the Slotpark, where the swimming pool is also located. Quite apart from that, the hunting lodge with its garden and orchard itself covers 3 hectares for you to discover and walk in - and for the free gathering of fresh cherries, plums, nuts, pears and apples, depending on the season.
Additional price info and offers
LOW SEASON : October to May, excluding holidays.
HALFSEASON : June, September and recognised holiday periods.
HIGH SEASON : July - August.
N.B.. for more than 10 people over 3 years, a supplement of 70€ p.w. per person or 20€ p.d.p.
IN THE PERIOD FROM I OCTOBER TO 1 MAY THERE IS A HEATING SUPPLEMENT OF 35€ P.D. FOR THE CENTRAL ELECTRIC HEATING.
There are options such as wood for the fireplaces (1 ou 2x30 euro) ; provision of sheets and towels etc. (12 euro p.p.), baby cot (10 euro per cot), cleaning afterwards (100 euro), Wifi 30 E.
Apart from the heating surcharge in the autumn/spring and winter season and a residence tax (Taxe de Séjour) introduced since 1/1/20, there are no compulsory surcharges; only options.
For rentals longer than a fortnight in low season, 50% reduction.
For dogs there is a surcharge of 40 euros per dog p.w. / 10€ p.d. (Only well-trained dogs allowed due to risk of damage).

Experience has shown that the months of July and August and around the holidays in late December often see late requests for rental of the entire hunting lodge, East & West wing. It is better to request this as early as possible; best already in the previous year.
