The house

  • Quiet, rural area with some agricultural activity

This holiday home with a great view was originally built in 1839, according to the ancien cadastre in Bar-le-Duc. This lovingly restored holiday home offers now contemporary comfort.
In the living room you will find a 6-seater pear wood dining table which dates from around 1700. In addition to a four-burner stove, there is a classic and well-functioning wood stove (around 1900) great for lovers of slow cooking (firewood available). Furthermore, there is a Nespresso machine and a small electric oven for your warm baguette and a refrigerator with a three-star freezer compartment. At your disposal is also a small wine stock which we kindly ask you to replenish yourself after use.
The television has no channels but can only play DVDs (30 films available, two of which are children's films), there is also a stereo tuner / amplifier with CD player and connection for iPod / MP3 player / smart phone / laptop.
The antique double bed is 140 cm wide, the two single beds are 80 cm wide and have an adjustable headboard. Pillows and blankets are available, linen package can be rented on request via key keeper.
In front of the south-facing terrace (sun from morning to sunset) with a particularly great view there are three comfortable wicker armchairs plus table with parasol and also a lounger. There is a barbecue / fire pit on the corner of the terrace (wood provided). The holiday home is equipped with a Solar Venti system on solar energy to keep it dry and ventilated. Finally, there are mosquito nets for all windows and a fly curtain for the front door. Laundry facilities are in Stenay (6 km) la Lavandiere, Rue du Port. The rental price includes water, gas, electricity, wifi and final cleaning. Firewood is included with the exception of September 1 to May 1, unlimited wood 30 euros per week.

Surroundings

This self catering holiday home is uniquely situated on top of the hill near the village of Brouennes and has a legendary view over the valley and village. In the middle of the 'green lung of Europe', on the border of the Ardennes and Meuse departments, in the triangle Luxembourg-Reims-Nancy.
The immediate surroundings are very hilly in contrast to the rest of the landscape. The roof tiles which, as I was told by old Italian immigrants, remind of Italy and are exceptional for the architecture. The houses are built of beautiful yellow stone from the quarries of this area.
Brouennes is a small village with 160 inhabitants, it is one of the most characteristic villages of the area with houses along the river Baâlon. This small stream of water supplies the fish farming ponds between the village and the castle of Bronelle.
The "wild" nature is beautiful and accessible, with a great variety of birds and exceptional flora.

Janna & Wim

Restaurants, food & wine

For your daily shopping there is a hypermarche in Stenay, (6 km) and a bread and grocer's bus arrives in the village every day.
There are a number of simple restaurants in Stenay and Montmedy. Furthermore, good restaurants in Herbeumont and Torgny in Belgium (about 30 km) and in Reims and Nancy (up to 100 km). There are weekly general farmers markets (fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, fish and clothing) in Stenay and Montmedy (6.14 km). In the department of the Meuse and in Torgny there are a number of small wineries and truffle farms.

Activities

Plenty of opportunity for cycling, walking, sunbathing, reading and lighting fires. From the holiday home, walk directly on the "Chemin de Vaches", or make a bike ride to Stenay, through forests, hills and valleys! For fishermen, there is the possibility to catch a maximum of 8 trout in the ponds of Brouennes for 12.50 euros, it doesn't get any fresher! The Maas also offers many opportunities for fishermen (with a permit). Climbing can be practiced in one of the old quarries. For shops, museums, restaurants and champagne, go to Reims or Nancy at a distance within 100 km. Throughout the summer season, there are many flea markets -with good prices- in the surrounding departments. Swimming is possible in the Maas and in the lakes around the Maas.

Further remarks

The holiday home also includes the use of our organic herb / vegetable garden. This is an 80 m2 walled garden with on the lowest level about seventy different kinds of herbs, including Amaranth, Roman Chervil, Oregano Dictamus, Chinese Chives, Coarse Chives, five types of Sage, Garden Cress, Genepi, Lemon Herb, Roman Chervil, French, Mexican and Siberian Tarragon, Oyster Leaf, Bergamot, Woodruff , Absinthe and many, many others. On the higher part the 'forgotten' or old vegetables such as Jerusalem artichoke, Sea kale, Sea fennel, Cardoon, Purple Radish and many, many others. A challenge for experimental chefs; new flavors and beautiful colors! It is important to note that most herbs and vegetables are available from May to October - see pictures.
Herbs in a dish are like punctuation marks in a story and give it meaning and taste...
