The house
Located in a rural setting where time stands still, the studio is an oasis of silence and inspiration. The recently converted barn makes you feel at home immediately. The open spatial layout, the panoramic view from the large windows and the deafening silence let you relax immediately. In both sitting areas you can lounge, read a book or gaze outside. There is high-speed internet, so watching a movie once is no problem. The sleeping area has a double bed with mosquito net, to feel completely enveloped. In addition, the bathroom is equipped with very spacious walk-in shower, Trobolo dry toilet and original sink with mirror.
It is located in the 'Vallée des Peintres', an area where painters like Monet came to paint the special light of the landscape. You are surrounded by forests, fields, and rivers, small villages and narrow winding roads. You can hear the river Creuse flowing, that's how quiet it can be - and that's how close the Creuse is. Here you are in no time for a cooling dip, to sunbathe or fish. At the waterside restaurant, 'Au z'Amis du Lac', you can enjoy lunch or dinner in the evening. Due to the pure air and remote location, starry nights are breathtaking, and sunrise and sunset admirable. The area has beautiful walks and cycling routes, on old paths between fields or through the forest. This part of France is not yet so touristy, so the interesting places and sights can be visited quietly. Are you looking forward to a lovely late summer in a complete 'change of scenery', then this is the ideal cottage!

Markets
The market is a central part of French life, many places have a market on a fixed day during the week. The market is usually from 8.00-13.00
I always go to Gueret on Saturdays, which is a big market with a good organic bakery too. But there are many other nice smaller markets in the area.

Brocantes
During summer, there are brocantes to visit every weekend, from small to large, near or far; the French love them! And so do we :-)

Bring cash and, as we Dutch have learned, you can always try to haggle! There are private individuals and traders. With dealers, prices are higher and haggling is less easy. You will recognise them by their more professional and expensive collections.
Cities worth visiting (but a bit further away)
Limoges (1h 10-minute drive)
A major university town with a rich history in both porcelain and enamel. The medieval centre is well worth a visit. There is a covered market hall, there are museums and shops with enamels and ceramics, a beautiful big church, lots of shops and restaurants and the occasional big fun flea market.
Aubusson (1 hour drive)
This small old town is known for its tapestry tradition. There is a beautiful, newly realised new museum building about this history and techniques.
If you go this way, a visit to Felletin, an old town on a hill, is also nice. See if they have a market there. From Aubusson it is also not far to the lakes of 'Lac de Vassiviere' and the higher natural area 'plateau de millevaches'.
Montlucon (1h 10-minute drive)
The old centre is located on a hill and has many nice shops and restaurants. It is a bit of a drive so we only went there a couple of times ourselves, but a nice outing if you are at Villa Bâton for a longer time and feel like going out.
Bénévent-l'Abbaye (35-minute drive)
This is a beautiful town and also a destination on the route to Santiago de Compostella. There is a large abbey and there is also an interactive museum on the history of the creuse!
