The house
Les Cardayres is a beautifully restored stone farmhouse with an adjacent cellar and barn in its own grounds overlooking the surrounding countryside. The Winehouse is full of character and history, with oak beams, blue shutters and a tiled roof and offers spacious accommodation in three en suite bedrooms. The owners live in the old farmhouse and are happy to provide advice or assistance on the local area, while ensuring the privacy of their guests.
Once the region's leading wine producer, Les Cardayres is now surrounded by meadows, wild flowers and wooded walks since the old vineyards were replaced. Three villages offer a full range of services within a few minutes drive.
Winehouse has its own entrance, with shaded parking in the former orchard. A winding path leads through mirabelle, apple and banana trees to the gated entrance, which opens directly onto the pool.
The three double rooms, each with en-suite bathroom, are arranged around the private 8 x 4 metre south-facing pool. The blue room, originally the farm's chicken coop, has a queen-size bed and a separate bathroom with shower, toilet and sink. The green room, located in the former tobacco drying shed, is spread over two floors. The ground floor entrance has a separate bathroom with shower, toilet and sink. A staircase leads to the mezzanine, which has a double bed and a door leading to the gallery landing.
The yellow room, also in the old barn, has two single beds and a separate bathroom with shower, toilet and washbasin. The green and yellow rooms are linked by a medieval-style balcony overlooking Neuvic and the Isle valley. Steps lead up to the pool and then to a secluded south-facing terrace with built-in barbecue.
The sunny terrace is ideal for lunch and dinner with subtle lighting for a romantic atmosphere after sunset.
There is also a lower terrace, surrounded by roses, honeysuckle and lavender - perfect for a sunny outdoor breakfast. From the terrace, French doors lead to the kitchen with a large farm table and chairs, electric oven, ceramic hob, large butler's sink, dishwasher, washing machine and microwave.
Inside, the house has retained all its original character, with exposed stone walls and oak beams. From the kitchen, an old oak door leads into a large, comfortable living room which is pleasantly cool in summer, while a wood burning stove provides warmth on cool autumn evenings.
The lounge contains a large sofa, a television and a DVD player with a selection of films. There is also a small library with books and games.

Les Cardayres is situated in the middle of meadows and woods in a quiet corner of the Dordogne, but has excellent access to the region. The villages of Neuvic and St. Léon-sur-l'Isle and the town of St. Astier are just a few minutes drive from the house.
The Dordogne region is full of tourist attractions. It is only a ten minute drive to the new motorway which will take you to the wine region of Bordeaux in 45 minutes and to the city of Bordeaux in one hour. Sample the delights of the vineyards of St Emilion, Pomerol and, a little further afield, the Médoc where you can stop at the many chateaux and estates for a wine tasting.
Another fun outing is to hire a canoe to explore the Vezère and Dordogne rivers, passing historic châteaux and picturesque villages. In the vast Forêt de la Double, which starts right next to the house, there are numerous hiking trails and lakes for swimming. A little further afield you can visit the beautiful medieval town of Sarlat, Lascaux with its prehistoric cave paintings and Roque Gageac where the old houses cling to the cliffs. It is a half-hour drive to Périgueux, the capital of the Périgord region and one of France's culinary epicentres, where gourmet shops line the narrow medieval streets that border the imposing cathedral.

Reviews
P Rekers from Wijchen,
Tonnie from Lingewaard,
Our stay at The Winehouse at Les Cardayres was truly fantastic! The holiday home is beautifully situated in the hills, surrounded by serene and breathtaking nature. One of the first things that stood out upon arrival was the stunning swimming pool. It’s the perfect spot to relax and cool down on a warm summer day. The pool is spacious and well-maintained, ideal for a refreshing dip or simply soaking up the sun.
The house itself features three lovely standalone bedrooms, each with its own shower and toilet. This provides extra privacy and comfort, which is a big plus when traveling with a group. The rooms are spacious, and very well kept. Additionally, there’s a large terrace covered in beautiful wisteria, where we spent many hours enjoying the view and the peace of the surroundings. The kitchen is also impressively large, and when the weather wasn’t great, we had no problem eating inside at the big dining table. This makes the house suitable for all weather conditions, which enhanced our stay even more. It’s easy to cook and dine together, both indoors and outdoors.
A highlight of our stay was the friendly couple who owns the property and lives next door. They were incredibly warm and welcoming, making us feel right at home. During our stay, we were even invited over for an aperitif at their place, which was a very pleasant and personal experience. Their presence wasn’t intrusive at all, but rather a lovely addition to our holiday. As for the surroundings, there is so much to do! Whether you enjoy hiking, culture, or visiting local markets, you’ll never get bored here. The location offers a perfect balance of tranquility and the opportunity to explore the area.
In short, The Winehouse at Les Cardayres is a fantastic place for a relaxing holiday. It has everything you need, from comfort and privacy to a beautiful setting and a friendly host couple. I would return without a doubt!Michelle from Haarlem,
Activities
St Astier has a lively street market every Thursday, considered by many to be the best in the area. The market offers a wide variety of fresh fish, meats, cheeses, charcuterie, locally grown fruit and vegetables (often straight from someone's garden), as well as clothes and lots of bric-a-brac. The town also has doctors, dentists, a small cinema, three medium-sized supermarkets, numerous small shops and several cafés where you can sit under a shady parasol and watch a fairly small part of the world go by. If you fancy a walk, there are paths through the woods in front of the house and a country lane through the fields at the back.if you'd like to cycle in the area, there's a hire company in Neuvic so you can follow the signposted "Vélodélices" routes taken by the Dutch bloggers of a well-known online magazine (article published 09/11/2023).
